My existence of the last three years has been nothing but incident." The Year is 1883 and Emma M. Lion has returned to her London neighborhood of St. Crispian's. But Emma's plans for a charmed and studious life are sabotaged by her eccentric Cousin Archibald, her formidable Aunt Eugenia, and the slightly odd denizens of St. Crispian's. Emma M. Lion offers up her Unselected Journals, however self-incriminating they may be, which comprise a series of novella-length volumes. Armed with wit and a sideways amusement, Emma documents the curious realities of her life at Lapis Lazuli House. Readers have compared Beth Brower's writing to Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde, P.G. Wodehouse, and L. M. Montgomery.

Book Progress Into Silence

Download or read book Progress Into Silence written by Alan Lebowitz and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melville's story is that of the young neophyte's quest for a distinctive hero in his own image and of that hero's pursuit of ultimate knowledge and authority. The controlling theme, basic to American literature, is that of the necessary fall, the innocent's emergence into manhood by means of a literal ordeal that offers, in all its pain and difficulty, important perceptions into the nature of the world. The first, and decisive, discovery is mortality. Only by confronting the fact that he will die, recognizing, as Melville often put it, the universal sentence of annihilation, does a boy become a man. Testing that perception, probing ever deeper into the mystery of things, asking questions of the meaning of annihilation as well as of its agent, man becomes a potential hero. The fullest understanding causes, inevitably, the greatest pain. Few penetrate the deepest mystery of things, and those who do are Melville's heroes.

Franois Roche (born in 1961 in Paris) and his partner Stephanie Lavaux (born in 1966 on the Reunion Island) are radical advocates of an architecture which is to be perceived as a tool for increasing critical awareness, as a discipline which provokes thought and inspires the imagination. Their buildings and projects, which include the new art museum in Bangkok and the Glacier Museum in Switzerland, both of which would have been unthinkable without the latest IT methods of design, strive towards designs which are unique and unmistakeable in both function and appearance. Franois Roche is guest professor at the London Bartlett School and the Technical University of Vienna, and has made a name for himself internationally as a pioneer of a new architecture through his lecture activities and his participation in many exhibitions. This monograph is the first complete overview of his workand will be published to coincide with the exhibition "No Standard Architecture" which opens in November at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, where R & Sie...architects are one of the 12 invited architectural firms.

Book Letter Book London and Philadelphia 1681 1684

Download or read book Letter Book London and Philadelphia 1681 1684 written by James Claypoole and published by San Marino, Calif. : Huntington Library. This book was released on 1967 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters that make up this book present a vivid account of the life of an active and successful businessman in the latter seventeenth century. They give a fresh, absorbing picture of the early years of the colony of Pennsylvania and of the inner (as well as outer) life of London Quaker merchant James Claypoole, who was by turns generous and penny-pinching, forbearing with important clients, intolerant with others, deeply religious, often irritable--but certainly never dull. He loaned large sums of money to his brothers and friends, knowing he would never get it back, yet he haggled for months over tiny debts. A man of peace, he quarreled with most of his correspondents, writing them verbose sermons but continuing to do business with them. He was strictly honest in all his business dealings, but he cheated the Customs when he could and was furious when they caught and fined him. He was a good friend of William Penn and George Fox, and of all the leading Quakers of the day. He was hard-working and popular in his Meeting, and one can only conclude that he had charm. Claypoole also had intelligence, as Fox and Penn consulted him about their writings, and he helped Penn draft the Frame of Government for Pennsylvania. He held a prominent post in the Free Society of Traders. As the letter book begins about the time Penn was granted his colony, the reader can follow, week by week, the founding of the state, in which Claypoole played an important part. The reader can also see the frustrations in the life of a seventeenth-century merchant and the workings of an expanding colonial trade. Although Claypoole was in debt when he left London to follow Penn to Philadelphia, when he died a few years later he was one of the richest merchants in that infant town.

Book excerpt: Darrow fell in love with Elinor at first sight. But she was already engaged. To two men. He joined the Merchant Marine to train as a radio operator. His letters from Gallups Island and then the war charmed her, but Elinor had changed. Women entered the working world--as boatbuilders and micrometer testers and even riveters and movie stars--and she wanted to become Something Big. Marriage wasn't for her. Darrow's letters kept coming. . . . . . the same letters my sister and I discovered in a large photo box after our parents? deaths. Their romance was interrupted by the war and by the fledgling dreams of a woman, a Bishop's daughter, who wanted to do something more than carry on the traditional roles women had in the forties. The tale of this romance is in both voices--Elinor's from the homefront and Darrow's from the war.

Book It Seems to Me

Download or read book It Seems to Me written by Leonard C. Schlup and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most important women of the 20th Century, Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) was also one of its most prolific letter writers. Yet never before has a selection of her letters to public figures, world leaders, and individuals outside her family been made available to general readers and to historians unable to visit the archives at Hyde Park. It Seems to Me demonstrates Roosevelt's significance as a stateswoman and professional politician, particularly after her husband's death in 1945. These letters reveal a dimension of her personality often lost in collections of letters to family members and friends, that of a shrewd, self-confident woman unafraid to speak her mind. In her letters, Roosevelt lectured Truman, badgered Eisenhower, and critiqued Kennedy. She disagreed with the Catholic Church over aid to parochial schools, made recommendations for political appointments, expressed her opinion on the conviction of Alger Hiss. Some letters demonstrate her commitment to civil rights, many her understanding of Cold War politics, and still others her support of labor unions. As a whole, this collection provides unique insights into both Eleanor Roosevelt's public life, as well as American culture and politics during the decades following World War II.
