Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unmarried Mother in German Literature: With Special Reference to the Period 1770 1800 But this dissertation was undertaken primarily to find, if possible, a more satisfactory explanation than has been given hitherto for Goethe's utilization Of the theme Of unmarried motherhood with its consequent infanticide in his Faust. It was suggested by Professor Calvin Thomas that a study Of the laws and customs contemporary with Goethe might throw light upon this question. The investigation was not limited, therefore, to the field Of belles lettres but included all literature of the period which might have a bearing on the subject. In the first two chapters I have accordingly devoted much space to a discussion of all literature on the subject up to 1800, devoting Chapter III more particularly to the belles lettres of the Storm and Stress period. The original intention of adding a chapter on the development of the prob lem in German life and literature from 1800 to the present time was not carried out because of its unsuspected extent. A study of this period with especial reference to the Changed attitude of the church shall be the subject of a future research. Book The Cambridge History of German Literature

Download or read book The Cambridge History of German Literature written by Helen Watanabe-O'Kelly and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-06-12 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to describe German literary history up to the unification of Germany in 1990. It takes a fresh look at the main authors and movements, and also asks what Germans in a given period were actually reading and writing, what they would have seen at the local theatre or found in the local lending library; it includes, for example, discussions of literature in Latin as well as in German, eighteenth-century letters and popular novels, Nazi literature and radio plays, and modern Swiss and Austrian literature. A new prominence is given to writing by women. Contributors, all leading scholars in their field, have re-examined standard judgements in writing a history for our own times. The book is designed for the general reader as well as the advanced student: titles and quotations are translated, and there is a comprehensive bibliography.

Book The Virginal Mother in German Culture

Download or read book The Virginal Mother in German Culture written by Lauren Nossett and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Virginal Mother in German Culture presents an innovative and thorough analysis of the contradictory obsession with female virginity and idealization of maternal nature in Germany from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries. Lauren Nossett explores how the complex social ideal of woman as both a sexless and maternal being led to the creation of a unique figure in German literature: the virginal mother. At the same time, she shows that the literary depictions of virginal mothers correspond to vilified biological mother figures, which point to a perceived threat in the long nineteenth century of the mother’s procreative power. Examining the virginal mother in the first novel by a German woman (Sophie von La Roche), canonical texts by Goethe, nineteenth-century popular fiction, autobiographical works, and Thea von Harbou’s novel Metropolis and Fritz Lang’s film by the same name, this book highlights the virginal mother at pivotal moments in German history and cultural development: the entrance of women into the literary market, the Goethezeit, the foundation of the German Empire, and the volatile Weimar Republic. The Virginal Mother in German Culture will be of interest to students and scholars of German literature, history, cultural and social studies, and women’s studies.
