Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Pennsylvania Library Chronicle, Vol. 11: Issued Four Times a Year by and for the Friends of the Library of the University; April 1943 On the assumption that the Friends of the University's Library are friends of all libraries, we are making libraries, old and new, the subject Of this issue of the Library Chronicle the library of ancient times, illustrated by one which was con tributing to civilization some two thousand years before the Christian era, described by Dr. Kramer, research fellow in the Babylonian section of the University Museum; our neighbor, the Darby Library, which contributed to the education and culture of Philadelphia in colonial years, and Will Observe its bicentennial May 1; certain aspects Of a present-day public library's service, described by Miss Flexner, readers' adviser Of the New York Public Library; and the article by Mr. Brown, our reference librarian, contrasting our old library of the present With the new library of 1891. If there be anything incongruous in thus combining periods and libraries so far separated in time and so dissimilar, it may be excused by the fact that libraries are probably as Old as civilization, and from the earliest known antiquity have been recognized as an essential, integral part of civilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Pennsylvania Library Chronicle, 1934, Vol. 2 Dr. Johnson had given great attention to the writing of his preface, and a few days before the work appeared, a small number of copies of the preface had been separately issued with a special title page, found only in such copies. One of these rare pamphlets is in the Furness Library. When the work was begun Dr. Johnson's fame was not SO great as it had become by 1765, and accordingly the print ing was not a large one, and the interest which it excited was sufficient to exhaust the entire edition very rapidly. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Pennsylvania Library Chronicle, 1938, Vol. 6 Other libraries sent precious manuscripts or rare books, and the splendid portrait of Hopkinson by Robert E. Pine, lent by the Historical Society of Pennsylvania and hung on a pillar overlooking the exhibition cases, was a notable ad dition to the literary and musical items. Hopkinson's claim to be the first American composer, made in his lifetime in the dedication of his Seven Songs, has been amply substantiated in our own time by the eminent musicologist, Oscar G. Sonneck. The musical side of Hopkin son's genius was very thoroughly represented in the exhibition. The place of honor was accorded to the manuscript song-book, lent by the Library Of Congress, a collection of songs and opera arias in Hopkinson's hand, containing six songs of his own composition. All of the songs in this book seem to have been written down in 1759-60, and My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free, to a poem by Thomas Parnell, is generally considered to be the earliest composition by a native Americanmusician. Although the composer published a group of songs some thirty years later, none of those in this early manuscript were included, and this first American song, which possesses considerable charm in addition to its historical importance, had to wait nearly one hundred and fifty years to appear in print. The young composer's excellent musical taste is amply demonstrated by the works he chose to copy into this note book. Of the more than one hundred compositions repre sented, nearly all are the work of eighteenth-century com posers and sixteen are by Handel, the foremost composer living during Hopkinson's youth. (hopkinson's ignorance of Johann Sebastian Bach need occasion no surprise, as the latter was scarcely known during the second half of the eighteenth century.) Other important names which figure among the composers whose work it has been possible to identify are the English composers Purcell, Boyce, and Dr. Arne, and the famous Continental musicians Hasse and Pergolesi. The first three years have abundantly shown the value of such an organization, and the Library has profited greatly from the generosity of the mem bers. Contributions in money have made possible the pur chase of many books which Otherwise could not have been bought, and many valuable books have been given. We are grateful for all this assistance, and for the increased interest in the Library's service. Annual membership in the Friends of the Library is Open to everyone who gives to the Library five dollars or more in money, or books, suitable for a University Library, of not less than five dollars in value. Members receive invitations to the meetings, held once or twice a year, at which addresses are given by distinguished speakers, and receive also this quarterly publication, the Library Chronicle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Pennsylvania Library Chronicle, 1937, Vol. 5 It is timely for us to remember today that Penn's Frame of Government for Pennsylvania laid down the doctrine, revolutionary then, that Governments rather depend upon men than men upon governments, but with all this idealism he was exceedingly practical although he had never had any experience in business. He was a good organizer and prob ably the greatest real estate salesman in history. He wrote with his own hand a pamphlet advertising the advantages of Pennsylvania, which was spread far and wide in translations into Dutch, German, and French. He wanted solid, trained, equipped colonists, and this pamphlet brought them by the thousands and tens of thousands. As a result, Pennsylvanialand was not held in large blocks, as in Virginia and Ne York. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Pennsylvania Library Chronicle, 1944, Vol. 12 I have spoken so far of the tardiness with which Slavic studies took root in this country. A second serious Obstacle for a rapid progress Of Slavic scholarship in America was the lack of an organic and planned program. Too much was left to chance. Only acute crises generated financial support and promoted interest. The many, and brilliant, American achieve ments in the Slavic field were until recently primarily the work of a few enthusiasts, and less the result of a constructive policy on the part of American universities and colleges. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Pennsylvania Library Chronicle, 1940, Vol. 8: Nos. 1 and 2-3 The Library has recently been enriched by the gift of the music library of the Philadelphia Art Alliance. This splendid collection will be welcomed and put to extensive use both by research workers in musicology and by the many students in undergraduate music courses at the University. This gift of the Board of Directors of the Art Alliance is particularly appreciated in the year of the University's bicentennial celebration. The collection consists of upwards of volumes Of musical literature and of scores. Blany of the books on music were originally in the library of James Crosby Brown, and include important and rare works in history of music and on musical instruments. The music scores include a large quantity of bound volumes of piano and vocal music, a number of vocal scores of operas, and an important addition to the University's collection of full orchestral scores. There is also a considerable collection Of chamber music in both scores and parts. Since the collection was formed some years ago, there is very little of the music of the last fifty years, but on the other hand the most important classic and romantic composers are very fully represented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Pennsylvania Library Chronicle, Vol. 13: Issued Four Times a Year by and for the Friends of the Library of the University; March, 1945; Life of Robert Montgomery Bird, Written by His Wife, Mary Mayer Bird (Third Instalment) S well as the opportunities for observation - limited though they were - relieved the gloom of the retrospect, and left a feeling of sober satisfaction when, in after years, he reverted to the events of this winter. Besides, with his usual good luck in this respect, he again had occasion to rejoice in the moth erly attentions of a most kind-hearted land-lady, whose heart he so won that, not only did she her utmost to promote his comfort and recovery, but ever after manifested the greatest interest in his welfare. In addition, he was blessed with the society of his friend Grimes, then temporarily resident in the city. Being confined a great deal indoors, the time must have passed rather drearily, but the evenings were enlivened by music or a game of chess, in which he soon became proficient. There were some superior players in the house, and the chess board was regularly a source of entertainment. AS a general rule, Dr. Bird never fancied or indulged in games of chance or Skill; but this winter, unable to do much else, he, in this way, alleviated many a heavy hour, and was soon voted one of the most expert hands. Among the most frequent occupants of the board was a young couple, shortly to be united in marriage. Being rather excitable and proud of their skill, it was some times observed that interest in the game bid fair to over power the tenderness belonging to their mutual relations; and one evening, in an unusually long contest, the rivalry waxed so strong as to threaten a decided quarrel. At this crisis, when every move made more imminent the danger of a rupture, the table at which they were playing was violently Shaken, as if by the awkwardness or inadvertence of some one rising hasti ly. Confusion reigned among knights and castles, bishops and royal personages, and the game, nearly finished, was ir retrievably broken up. But the storm was averted; and Dr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
