Book excerpt: A groundbreaking account of the American Revolution—from the bestselling author of American Dynasty In this major new work, iconoclastic historian and political chronicler Kevin Phillips upends the conventional reading of the American Revolution by debunking the myth that 1776 was the struggle’s watershed year. Focusing on the great battles and events of 1775, Phillips surveys the political climate, economic structures, and military preparations of the crucial year that was the harbinger of revolution, tackling the eighteenth century with the same skill and perception he has shown in analyzing contemporary politics and economics. The result is a dramatic account brimming with original insights about the country we eventually became.

Book The Thirty seventh North Carolina Troops

Download or read book The Thirty seventh North Carolina Troops written by Michael C. Hardy and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Carolina contributed more of her sons to the Confederate cause than any other state. The 37th North Carolina, made up of men from the western part of the state, served in famous battles like Chancellorsville and Gettysburg as well as in lesser known engagements like Hanover Courthouse and New Bern. This is the account of the unit's four years' service, told largely in the soldiers' own words. Drawn from letters, diaries, and postwar articles and interviews, this history of the 37th North Carolina follows the unit from its organization in November 1861 until its surrender at Appomattox. The book includes photographs of the key players in the 37th's story as well as maps illustrating the unit's position at several engagements. Appendices include a complete roster of the unit and a listing of individuals buried in large sites such as prison cemeteries. A bibliography and index are also included.

Book The 30th North Carolina Infantry in the Civil War

Download or read book The 30th North Carolina Infantry in the Civil War written by William Thomas Venner and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the outbreak of the Civil War, the men of the 30th North Carolina rushed to join the regiment, proclaiming, "we will whip the Yankees, or give them a right to a small part of our soil--say 2 feet by 6 feet." Once the Tar Heels experienced combat, their attitudes changed. One rifleman recorded: "We came to a Yankee field hospital ... we moved piles of arms, feet, hands." By 1865, the unit's survivors reflected on their experiences, wondering "when and if I return home--will I be able to fit in?" Drawing on letters, journals, memoirs and personnel records, this history follows the civilian-soldiers from their mustering-in to the war's final moments at Appomattox. The 30th North Carolina had the distinction of firing at Abraham Lincoln on July 12, 1864, as the president stood upon the ramparts of Ft. Stevens outside Washington, D.C., and firing the last regimental volley before the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Book Crimes of Hate

Download or read book Crimes of Hate written by Phyllis B. Gerstenfeld and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2004 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a collection of readings that approach hate crimes from a variety of perspectives. Part 1 provides an introduction and a comparison of both historic and modern-era hate crimes. Part 2 discuss legal developments, and some of the complexities associated with legislation and judicial interpretation. Part 3 focuses on the complex public policy issues raised in creating laws to define hate crimes, and shows how public policy development reflects both political and practical considerations. Readings in the next section examine the perpetrators, showing that these crimes relate to diverse theoretical perspectives and a wide range of methods. Part 5 examines and discusses organized hate groups and the central role they play in extremism. This is followed by a section of historical and contemporary examples of the ways in which members of targeted groups have been victimized, as well as the social processes by which people come to be characterized as "others" outside the mainstream of society. Part 7 examines different strategies for fighting hate through changing attitudes which serve as precursors to hate crimes, and for responding to the emotional needs of victims when dealing with the aftermath of hate crimes. The last section presents international perspectives.

Book The Chicago Board of Trade Battery in the Civil War

Download or read book The Chicago Board of Trade Battery in the Civil War written by Dennis W. Belcher and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-03-11 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1862, the directors of the Chicago Board of Trade used their significant influence to organize perhaps the most prominent Union artillery unit in the Western Theater. Enlistees were Chicagoans, mainly clerks. During the Civil War, the battery was involved in 11 major battles, 26 minor battles and 42 skirmishes. They held the center at Stones River, repulsing a furious Confederate attack. A few days later, they joined 50 other Union guns in stopping one of the most dramatic offensives in the Western Theater. With Colonel Robert Minty's cavalry, they resisted an overwhelming assault along Chickamauga Creek. This history chronicles the actions of the Chicago Board of Trade Independent Light Artillery at the battles of Farmington, Dallas, Noonday Creek, Atlanta, in Kilpatrick's Raid, and at Nashville, and Selma.
