Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kansas University Science Bulletin, Vol. 12 The first attempt to make a list of the Cicadellidx of Kansas seems to have been made by Professor E. A. Popenoe, who in 1885, in the Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science, vol. IX, p.63, listed a few of the members of this family that he had personally collected in the two preceding years. Nothing more seems to have been done along this line till the year 1905, when there appeared a list of the Kansas species in the Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science, vol. XIX, p.235, by Mr. F.F. Crevecreur, in which some eighty species and varieties were reported, nearly if not all of them taken by himself, within a few miles of his home at Onaga, Kan. He was followed by Mr. E.S. Tucker, who in 1906, in vol. XX, part 2, p. 192, of the same publication, added twenty-three species to Mr. Crevecceur slist, all of these species being taken in Douglas county. A fourth list was published in 1907 by the same writer in the Kansas University Science Bulletin, vol. IV, p. 65, where were listed the species taken by him in Douglas and Sedgwick counties. And finally, in 1911, there appeared a complete list of all the Cicadellidss taken in the state to date, by Mr.S. E.Crumb, who published his list, along with available host plant records, in the Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science, vol. XXIV, p.232. TN connection with the study of problems in sanitary engi- -- neering related to the rapid, efficient and economical disposal of sewage, a septic-tank system was installed south of the Fowler Shops, at the University of Kansas, and some analyses have been made of the effluent at various points in the system. The tank was built in the winter of 1903-'04, with the cooperation and under the supervision of Prof. W. C. Hoad, of the engineering department. The analyses of the effluent were made in the water-analysis laboratory. It is to be regretted that the series of analyses does not cover a longer period, but the end of the college year made it necessary to suspend operations. It is expected that the work will be continued by other students in the department. The objects of the experiments were to study the workings of a septic tank, to note the effect of aeration on the efHuent from the tank, and to see if, after thorough aeration, a second bacterial action could be secured in a second tank. A record was made of the approximate composition of the sewage treated, and the samples of effluent were taken at such points in the system as would show the efficiency at the stages mentioned. Collections were made from May 1974 to September 1975 as Often as time permitted. Through out the peak-emergence periods of adult flies, collections were conducted on alter nate days at the Breidenthal Reserve and the Natural History Reservation. At first all varieties of habitats were searched. Later, searches were concentrated on sev eral specific sites believed to represent the principal types Of crane fly habitats. Net sweeping was the basic method of collecting. All possible hiding places were explored with the net. Specimens were taken either at their resting Site, or in the air as they fled. No more than 20 speci mens per species were captured at each habitat on each trip. All flies caught by net were mounted.
