This book was released on 2017-06-05 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The University of Kansas Science Bulletin, 1978-1980, Vol. 51: Nos. 12-25 Observations and collections made in the two study areas described. Collections were made from May 1974 to September 1975 as Often as time permitted. Through out the peak-emergence periods of adult flies, collections were conducted on alter nate days at the Breidenthal Reserve and the Natural History Reservation. At first all varieties of habitats were searched. Later, searches were concentrated on sev eral specific sites believed to represent the principal types Of crane fly habitats. Net sweeping was the basic method of collecting. All possible hiding places were explored with the net. Specimens were taken either at their resting Site, or in the air as they fled. No more than 20 speci mens per species were captured at each habitat on each trip. All flies caught by net were mounted. Book University of Kansas Science Bulletin Vol 36

Download or read book University of Kansas Science Bulletin Vol 36 written by University Of Kansas and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Kansas Science Bulletin, Vol. 36: Devoted to the Publication of the Results of Research by Members of the University of Kansas; Part II, University of Kansas Publications, Lawrence, July 15, 1954 In a short paper published in 1935, Dunn characterized the genus N inia and laid a firm taxonomic foundation by diagnosing the species discernible at that time. He listed five monotypic species. In the meantime, information scattered in several dozen publications has more than doubled the number of recognized forms and has greatly augmented knowledge of them all. Our own studies, resulting in the addition of one new sub species of N inia diademata and the resurrection of another, required a detailed consideration of the variation in all the populations of that species and a survey of all recent literature pertaining to the genus. We thus take this opportunity to summarize the genus with a short general characterization anda briefly annotated list of the currently recognized species and Subspecies. The species are arranged in the order in which they appear geographically, from south to north, and subspecies within each Species in the same order. Book Sex Size and Gender Roles

Download or read book Sex Size and Gender Roles written by Daphne J. Fairbairn and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2007-07-05 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do males and females frequently differ so markedly in body size and morphology?lSex, Size, and Gender Roles is the first book to investigate the genetic, developmental, and physiological basis of sexual size dimorphism found within and among the major taxonomic groups of animals. Carefully edited by a team of world-renowned specialists in the field to ensure a coherence of style and approach between chapters, it presents a compendium of studies into the evolution, adaptive significance, and developmental basis of gender differences in body size and morphology. Adaptive hypotheses allude to gender-specific reproductive roles and associated differences in trophic ecologies, life history strategies, and sexual selection. This "adaptationist" approach is balanced by more mechanistic studies of the genetic, developmental and physiological basis of sexual size dimorphism to provide a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the subject. Throughout the volume the emphasis is on sexual dimorphism in overall size; however, the scope of enquiry encompasses gender differences in body shape, the size and structure of secondary sexual characteristics, patterns of growth (ontogeny), and patterns of gene regulation. This advanced, research level text is suitable for graduate level students and researchers in the fields of evolutionary biology, behavioural ecology, physiology, developmental biology, and genetics. It will also be of relevance and use to non-biologists from fields such as anthropology and gender studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transportation of species to areas outside their native ranges has been a feature of human culture for millennia. During this time such activities have largely been viewed as beneficial or inconsequential. However, it has become increasingly clear that human-caused introductions of alien biota are an ecological disruption whose consequences rival those of better-known insults like chemical pollution, habitat loss, and climate change. Indeed, the irreversible nature of most alien-species int- ductions makes them less prone to correction than many other ecological problems. Current reshuffling of species ranges is so great that the present era has been referred to by some as the “Homogocene” in an effort to reflect the unique mag- tude of the changes being made. These alien interlopers often cause considerable ecological and economic d- age where introduced. Species extinctions, food-web disruptions, community alte- tions, ecosystem conversion, changes in nutrient cycling, fisheries collapse, watershed degradation, agricultural loss, building damage, and disease epidemics are among the destructive – and frequently unpredictable – ecological and economic effects that invasive alien species can inflict. The magnitude of these damages c- tinues to grow, with virtually all environments heavily used by humans now do- nated by alien species and many “natural” areas becoming increasingly prone to alien invasion as well. Attention to this problem has increased in the past decade or so, and efforts to prevent or limit further harm are gaining wider scientific and political acceptance.

This book was released on 2016-12-10 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kansas University Science Bulletin, 1935, Vol. 23: Devoted to the Publication of the Results of Research by Members of the University of Kansas In 1932, accompanied by Hobart Smith, I ventured into Mexico. Here, it was apparent, was a fairly accessible term incognita that held the answer to many relationship problems and which doubtless still had undiscovered Species. It was a critical region and larger series of known species were needed before the relationship of Mexican and American forms could be understood. This Mexican journey carried us into seventeen Mexican states and rewarded us with more than a hundred specimens of these skinks, certain of which represented Species apparently new to science. However, the very disheartening fact remained that we had failed to Obtain several rare forms long known to science, in spite of the fact that search was made in the type localities in some cases. The summer of 1933 was spent in Eastern museums, examining and reexamining Specimens. In 1934 I journeyed in western Mexico in the states of Sonora, Sinaloa and Nayarit. Here I met with most disheartening results as regards Eumeces. In the two months collecting (although more than specimens were collected) only a Single specimen of Eumeces was taken. Hobart Smith, in 1934, accompanied by David Dunkle, made a journey into northwestern Mexico in the states of Chihuahua, Durango, Zacatecas and Nuevo Leon, and while gener ally successful, likewise Obtained only a single specimen of Eumeces.
