Book Racial Cleansing in Arkansas 1883 1924

Download or read book Racial Cleansing in Arkansas 1883 1924 written by Guy Lancaster and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even before the end of Reconstruction in Arkansas, the state already possessed a long-standing reputation for violence, including lynchings, duels, and feuds. However, the years following Reconstruction witnessed the creation of new forms of mob violence. All across the state, gangs of whites sought to drive African Americans from their homes, their jobs, and their positions of authority, creating communities shamelessly advertised as “100% white.” This happened not only in the highland regions, the Ozarks and the Ouachitas, where the expulsion of African Americans created so-called “sundown towns,” but it also occurred in the low-lying Delta lands of eastern Arkansas, where cotton was king and where masked mobs of landless “whitecappers” and “nightriders” regularly dealt terror and murder to black sharecroppers. Racial Cleansing in Arkansas, 1883–1924: Politics, Land, Labor, and Criminality by Guy Lancaster is the first book to examine the phenomenon of racial cleansing within the context of one particular state, illustrating how violence relates to geography and economic development. Lancaster analyzes the wholesale expulsion of African Americans and the emergence of “sundown towns” together with a survey of more limited deportations, including those with blatant political goals as well as vigilante violence. The book has broader implications not only for the study of Southern and American history but also for a deeper understanding of ethnic and racial conflict, local politics, and labor history

In all that excitement, it's easy to overlook the city's interesting past. In the 1800s, the area was embroiled in the Seminole Wars, and Fort Gatlin was constructed to shield citizens from attacks. Soon, a city grew around the fort. During the cowboy era, thousands of cattle, ranchers and cowboys crossed the central Florida terrain moving livestock. Those pioneers soon moved to farming, and Orlando became the center of the Florida citrus industry. Join author and historian James C. Clark as he reveals the remarkable history of one of the world's most popular destinations.

Book The University of Central Florida Through Time

Download or read book The University of Central Florida Through Time written by Kate Cumiskey and published by America Through Time. This book was released on 2015-09-24 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The University of Central Florida, founded just fifty years ago as Florida Technological University, is one of the fastest growing universities in the nation and is currently the United States, second largest. With over 60,000 students from all fifty states and over one hundred nations, it brings a diverse student body to the Central Florida area. While the main campus is in Orlando, there are nine satellite campuses in surrounding areas, making UCF easily accessible for students. The main campus--formerly citrus groves and pine scrub--honors the Florida ecology and lifestyle with 600 acres of lakes, woods, and a lovely arboretum. While campus is a-hum with students and faculty year-round, it is easy to find a quiet bench in a shady area to meditate, study, or simply enjoy the flora and fauna. The buildings are modern, academic and research opportunities prolific, and tuition is competitively affordable. "UCF Stands for Opportunity" is the motto, here, and it is reflected in the ever-changing landscape of twelve colleges rigorously preparing students for the future.
