It has its origin in the arguments of Wolf against the possible exist ence Of a long continuous early Greek epic. These argu ments led men to look for the traces Of joins in the poems, and to find them, to hunt for the resulting discrepancies, and to discover them. But Wolf's a priori arguments, we try to show, are no longer valid. It is not impossible that a long early Greek poem might have been composed, and might survive. This being so, we plead for wider and more generous views of the Iliad and Odyssey, for a study of poetry as poetry, not as a dubious clause in a Bill, or a doubtful statement by an historian. And though the philosopher does not like Plato identify the Homeric style with Tragedy, he holds that in these essentials the two coincide and the Unity which he postulates in Tragedy is found by him to an unsurpassed extent in the Iliad and the Odyssey. The following is an attempt at working out these theorems from the hints which the treatise offers and on the lines which it suggests. The text of the Homeric Poems employed is that of Monro and Allen in the Oxford Classical Series; and the Translations of Butcher, Lang, Leaf and Myers are assumed to be correct, except where differences are noted. The literature of that problem is already of a fullness to defy the bibliographer. And it grows incessantly. Those who try to keep abreast of it in its many branches long for a pause which does not come. There was a brief but welcome lull some years ago. Controversy almost ceased for a time, while disputants fell back and sought to reckon tip gain and loss. But the Lachmann drum was beaten afresh; and the Cretan discoveries, the novelties of the Saga-searchers, the restless strivings of the Culturists, the speculations of Professor Murray and the arguments of Mr. Andrew Lang, have all helped to stimulate discussion. Miss Stawell has dealt a heavy blow where it was least expected. The contest is active once more. In Homeric phrase "they battle on relentlessly." An enumeration of only the treatises and essays which have appeared during the four years that the present book has occupied, would require a bulky Appendix. And yet, abundant as the contributions to the controversy continue to be, and although the Lay of Dolon has certainly its fair share of attention, it may be claimed that the old excuse is a good reason in the case of the present effort. Destructive criticism has scored many supposed successes by determined and exhaustive polemics against particular books or episodes of the poems.
