Book The United Nations Development Programme

Download or read book The United Nations Development Programme written by Craig N. Murphy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-14 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations Development Programme is the central network co-ordinating the work of the United Nations in over 160 developing countries. This 2006 book provides the first authoritative and accessible history of the Programme and its predecessors. Based on the findings of hundreds of interviews and archives in more than two dozen countries, Craig Murphy traces the history of the UNDP's organizational structure and mission, its relationship to the multilateral financial institutions, and the development of its doctrines. He argues that the principles on which the UNDP was founded remain as relevant in a world divided by terrorism as they were in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, as are the fundamental problems that have plagued the Programme from its origin, including the opposition of traditionally isolationist forces in the industrialized world.

Book Effectiveness and Reform of the United Nations Development Programme UNDP

Download or read book Effectiveness and Reform of the United Nations Development Programme UNDP written by Stephan Klingebiel and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1999 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations' development co-operation has often been criticized in the past; many shortcomings can indeed be identified. However, efforts to overcome the existing problems have been stepped up. A key role in the reform of the UN in this area is played by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This study is intended as a constructive contribution to the current debate on the reform of UN development co-operation. It analyses both the main weaknesses of UN development co-operation as a whole and the reforms that have so far been undertaken. On this basis it identifies the areas in which further efforts are needed if the UNDP is to become more effective.

Book Human Development Report 2004

Download or read book Human Development Report 2004 written by United Nations Development Programme and published by Human Development Report. This book was released on 2004 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 15th report, prepared by a team of independent experts, which explores major development issues of global concern. The 2004 report focuses on issues of cultural liberty and concludes that countries must actively devise multicultural policies to prevent cultural discrimination (whether on grounds of religion, ethnicity or language), since the expansion of cultural freedoms is at the core of human development. Rather than presenting a threat to state unity, the report argues that diversity is the only sustainable option to promote stability and democracy within and across societies. Issues discussed include: confronting extremist movements for cultural domination; myths surrounding cultural liberty and development; the impact of globalisation on cultural choice; social exclusion, human rights and participation. It also includes data tables for the Human Development Index (HDI) which measures key social and economic indicators for rich and poor countries, including life-expectancy, health and sanitation, employment rights, gender equality, education and income per-person.

Download or read book Pathways for Peace written by United Nations;World Bank and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Violent conflicts today are complex and increasingly protracted, involving more nonstate groups and regional and international actors. It is estimated that by 2030—the horizon set by the international community for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals—more than half of the world’s poor will be living in countries affected by high levels of violence. Information and communication technology, population movements, and climate change are also creating shared risks that must be managed at both national and international levels. Pathways for Peace is a joint United Nations†“World Bank Group study that originates from the conviction that the international community’s attention must urgently be refocused on prevention. A scaled-up system for preventive action would save between US$5 billion and US$70 billion per year, which could be reinvested in reducing poverty and improving the well-being of populations. The study aims to improve the way in which domestic development processes interact with security, diplomacy, mediation, and other efforts to prevent conflicts from becoming violent. It stresses the importance of grievances related to exclusion—from access to power, natural resources, security and justice, for example—that are at the root of many violent conflicts today. Based on a review of cases in which prevention has been successful, the study makes recommendations for countries facing emerging risks of violent conflict as well as for the international community. Development policies and programs must be a core part of preventive efforts; when risks are high or building up, inclusive solutions through dialogue, adapted macroeconomic policies, institutional reform, and redistributive policies are required. Inclusion is key, and preventive action needs to adopt a more people-centered approach that includes mainstreaming citizen engagement. Enhancing the participation of women and youth in decision making is fundamental to sustaining peace, as well as long-term policies to address the aspirations of women and young people.

Book Human Development Report 1996

Download or read book Human Development Report 1996 written by United Nations Development Programme and published by Human Development Report. This book was released on 1996 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Human Development Report, now in its seventh edition, updates the unique Human Development Indicators comparing human development in most countries of the world, and the data tables on all aspects of human development. The special focus of this edition is on the important link between economic growth and human development. The Report maintains that the link is not automatic but can be established through proper policy management, arguing the case for initiating and accelerating economic growth and at the same time accelerating and sustaining human development in different parts of the world. The Report also maintains that the quality of growth is as important as its quantity; otherwise, growth can be jobless, voiceless, ruthless, rootless, and futureless. It identifies employment as an important instrument in translating the benefits of economic growth into people's lives. An indispensable resource for courses in international development, the Report ranks 174 countries according to the Human Development Index (HDI). It also gives the global ranking of more than 100 countries in terms of Gender-Related Development Index (GDI) and the Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM). The first index represents HDI, taking into account gender inequality in capabilities, and the second represents female opportunities in selected economic and political areas. New to this edition is the Capability Poverty Measure (CPM), which is used as an alternative to the traditional income poverty measure. The Report concludes that the future challenge is how to forge and sustain the desired kind of linkage between economic growth and human development in a globalized world which represents both opportunities and threats for the nations of the world.

Book Human Development Report 2000

Download or read book Human Development Report 2000 written by United Nations Development Programme and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2000 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eleventh edition in the series, the Human Development Report 2000: Human Development and Human Rights provides a thought provoking analysis of these two interrelated and intertwined issues. Human rights and human development are mutually reinforcing and culminate in enlarged human freedom. The Report traces the history of struggle for human rights as a common human experience and outlines the new frontier of the rights agenda for the 21st Century. HDR 2000 demonstrates the ways in which human rights enrich human development goals: adding moral force and ideas of claims, duties and obligations. Human development, in turn, brings a dynamic long-term perspective to human rights and adds more concrete analysis, quantification, and must consider the human rights impacts of policy choices. The Report analyses how human rights must be respected, protected and promoted in the development process. To that end, it addresses the accountability of governments to fulfill their duties, and provides a timely analysis of the duties and obligations of newer actors in the fields of human rights and human development such as corporations, NGOs, individuals, the international community and markets. Of particular importance is consideration of how the current global economic rules and institutions address human rights issues. The Report proposes strategies for promoting development that also protect and further human rights, with significant implications for a pro-human rights approach to development. HDR 2000 includes and updates the widely respected Human Development Indicators that compare the relative levels of human development in most countries of the world, and presents data tables on all aspects of human development.
