Book Women and the United Nations

Download or read book Women and the United Nations written by Filomina Chioma Steady and published by Schenkman Books. This book was released on 1995 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its founding in 1945, the United Nations has placed the advancement of women at the forefront of its agenda. The UN Charter, for instance, is the first international document to recognize the equal rights of men and women. Yet how beneficial have UN programs been for women in the developing world? How must the UN change to make future programs more effective? And most importantly, what does the experience of women working within the UN system tell us about the UN's commitment to gender equity? Women and the United Nations: Reflections and New Horizons addresses these and other questions. Gathered here are papers and statements presented at a seminar organized by the UNIDO Forum of Women Professionals and held in Vienna in May 1995. The seminar marked the fiftieth anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and served as a preparatory activity for the Fourth World Conference on Women, to be held in Beijing in September 1995. The purpose of the seminar was to examine gender issues as they affect international development and especially to evaluate the UN's progress as a role model in the equitable treatment of women. The papers and statements, by well-known scholars and policy makers, address such issues as the gender implications of the UN's agenda for equality, development, and peace; women's role in the field operations and in technological advances, especially information technology; the dangers of technological change for women's health and the environment; improving women's status in the UN system; and increasing women's participation in economic and political decision making. In addition to a foreword by Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali, this book also includesthe full text of the seminar's recommendations for action to advance the status of women both within and outside the UN system. An appendix contains three resolutions drafted in March and April 1995 by the Commission on the Status of Women concerning trafficking in women and girls, the taking of women and children as hostages, and the improvement of women's status in the UN secretariat. This book emphasizes the need for women to take a central role in the design and implementation of policies and programs to promote sustainable development. Scholars, activists, and policy makers will value Women and the United Nations as a reference tool, and will find its analyses and prescriptions for action provocative and stimulating.

Book Gendered Peace

Download or read book Gendered Peace written by Donna Pankhurst and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contributes to the growing literature on women, conflict and peacebuilding by focusing on the moments after a peace accord, or some other official ending of a conflict, often denoted as ‘post-conflict’ or ‘post-war’. Such moments often herald great hope for holding to account those who committed grave wrongs during the conflict, and for a better life in the future. For many women, both of these hopes are often very quickly shattered in starkly different ways to the hopes of men. Such periods are often characterized by violence and insecurities, and the official ending of a war often fails to bring freedom from sexual violence for many women. Within such a context, efforts on the part of women, and those made on their behalf, to hold to account those who commit crimes against them, and to access their rights are difficult to make, are often dangerous, and are also often deployed with little effect. Gendered Peace explores international contexts, and a variety of local ones, in which such struggles take place, and evaluates their progress. The volume highlights the surprising success in the development of international legal advances for women, but contrasts this with the actual experience of women in cases from Sierra Leone, Rwanda, South Africa, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, East Timor, Peru, Central America and the Balkans.'

Book excerpt: In December 2016 the Group of Friends for Gender Parity mounted an exhibit at the UN called "HERstory: A Celebration of Leading Women in the United Nations." The purpose of the exhibit was to highlight the contributions made by the inspiring and pioneering women who were the first to hold and succeed in senior UN positions, and to identify key milestones in the advancement of women and gender parity in the Organization's history. The exhibit has since been enthusiastically received in showings at the UN Office at Geneva and at UNESCO in Paris. The great response from the exhibit's different audiences led Ambassador Alya Ahmed Saif Al-Thani of the Mission of the State of Qatar to the UN and Ambassador María Emma Mejía Vélez of the Mission of Colombia to the UN to decide to turn the exhibit into a book. It is hoped that the book, "HERstory: Celebrating Women Leaders in the United Nations," will promote widespread awareness of the contributions made and the leadership role played by women in the UN, immortalizing their legacy. It is also hoped that "HERstory" will help to support and accelerate the advancement of gender balance throughout the UN system. The book will be made widely available as a reference and resource tool to academics, researchers, organizations and institutions involved with and interested in women's and gender issues, and the intersection of women's and political studies. The main body of this publication is a record of women's "firsts" in the UN from 1945 to early 2018, and includes photographs, brief biographies and quotations. Information about key UN events and decisions, and images of historical texts are also featured. Additionally, "HERstory" includes a Foreword by current UN Secretary-General António Guterres, an Afterword by General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcák, and an Introduction by Ambassadors Al-Thani and Mejía. It also features an essay on Leadership by Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, and essays on the three pillars of the UN by former President of Ireland Mary Robinson (Human Rights), Dr. Noeleen Heyzer (Development) and Major General Kristin Lund (Peace and Security).

Book Women Development and the UN

Download or read book Women Development and the UN written by Devaki Jain and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-10-17 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Devaki Jain opens the doors of the United Nations and shows how it has changed the female half of the world -- and vice versa. Women, Development, and the UN is a book that every global citizen, government leader, journalist, academic, and self-respecting woman should read." -- Gloria Steinem "Devaki Jain's book nurtures your optimism in this terrible war-torn decade by describing how women succeeded in empowering both themselves and the United Nations to work toward a global leadership inspired by human dignity." -- Fatema Mernissi In Women, Development, and the UN, internationally noted development economist and activist Devaki Jain traces the ways in which women have enriched the work of the United Nations from the time of its founding in 1945. Synthesizing insights from the extensive literature on women and development and from her own broad experience, Jain reviews the evolution of the UN's programs aimed at benefiting the women of developing nations and the impact of women's ideas about rights, equality, and social justice on UN thinking and practice regarding development. Jain presents this history from the perspective of the southern hemisphere, which recognizes that development issues often look different when viewed from the standpoint of countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. The book highlights the contributions of the four global women's conferences in Mexico City, Copenhagen, Nairobi, and Beijing in raising awareness, building confidence, spreading ideas, and creating alliances. The history that Jain chronicles reveals both the achievements of committed networks of women in partnership with the UN and the urgent work remaining to bring equality and justice to the world and its women.

Book Yearbook of the United Nations Volume 50 1996

This book was released on 2023-09-20 with total page 1572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1996 edition of the Yearbook of the United Nations is the single most comprehensive and authoritative reference book about the work of the United Nations and related international organizations and bodies. Fully indexed and reproducing all major General Assembly, Security Council and Economic and Social Council resolutions, the volume is not only useful for diplomats, government officials and scholars, but also for researchers, writers, journalists, teachers, students and others with a serious interest in international and UN affairs. This volume of the Yearbook details the many activities of the Organization and its organs, programmes and bodies, as they are carried out in all corners of the globe. It gives an account of their endeavours to create better and more peaceful conditions for all mankind and records their efforts to deal with matters of pressing concern in a variety of areas, including peacekeeping and peacemaking, disarmament, human rights, trade and development, control of drug abuse and illicit trafficking, crime prevention, assistance to refugees and other vulnerable populations. Building on the experience of its first 50 years, the United Nations continued in 1996 to confront major global challenges. The observance of the International Year for the Eradication of Poverty can be seen as a benchmark for action to address a plethora of global ills that beset the majority of Earth's nearly 6 billion inhabitants - hunger, inadequate housing, disease, the deterioration of the environment, unemployment. During the year, the United Nations convened two major conferences - the `City Summit' in Istanbul, centering on the two themes of adequate shelter for all, and sustainable human settlement development in an urbanizing world, and the World Food Summit in Rome, whose main goal was food security for all. The Yearbook chronicles these events and many other milestones reached, making it an invaluable tool for anyone seeking in-depth information about the United Nations family. Also available from the UN, Sales No. E.97.I.1 As of volume 51 (1997) the Yearbook of the United Nations will no longer be published by Kluwer Law International.
