Book Letter From Henry R Jackson of Georgia to Ex Senator Allen G Thurman

Download or read book Letter From Henry R Jackson of Georgia to Ex Senator Allen G Thurman written by Henry R. Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letter From Henry R. Jackson, of Georgia, to Ex-Senator Allen G. Thurman: With Explanatory Papers The purpose of this pamphlet is to enable me to distribute correct copies of the following papers: 1. My remarks to the "Confederate Veterans," at Macon, October 26th. 2. My interview with an editor of the Atlanta Constitution, touching those remarks, published on the morning of October 29th. 3. The attack made upon me by Ex-Senator Thurman, at Columbus, Ohio, on the evening of November 6th. 4. My note, evoked by that attack, addressed to the Atlanta Constitution, November 7th. 5. Judge Thurman's communication of November 10th to the Associated Press. 6. My open letter to him of the same date. It is proper to state that my letter was not written "several days" before its publication, as was erroneously telegraphed by the Associated Press. Not a word of it was penned until his failure to make prompt recantation of his slanderous charges had satisfied me that he was not the man I had taken him to be; and that no retraction, worthy of a generous, or even a conscientious, nature would ever come from him. That I did not err in this conclusion has now been made manifest by his failure to take any notice whatever of my letter which, as appears from a Registry Return Receipt of the U. S. Post-office, was placed in his hands on the 14th instant. This, in connection with the closing sentences of his communication to the Associated Press, establishes the fact that, with the fullest light before him, he adheres, in cold blood, to the "bitter" calumnies he uttered against me "in his brief and offhand address;" not even repudiating, or qualifying, the vulgar words in which he clothed them. He has thus revealed the mortifying truth that a man may rise to reputation in the Federal Senate who, by a chance exposure of his real nature, must forfeit the respect of the decent and the just. For what just man, who reads my letter to him, will hold me to be "not only an enemy of the Democratic party, but of the whole country." because of anything I said in my Macon speech? What intelligent man, North or South, can question for a moment that I uttered the convictions of every Southron who has not pleaded, in his own heart, for himself or his ancestry, "Guilty of treason and murder!" This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters of a Family During the War for the Union 1861-1865, Vol. 1 These few happen to have been saved from a much larger number, which, coming almost daily at times from the brother (Charles), at the Headquarters of the Army of the Potomac, and the sisters in Hospital service, were carefully filed by the eldest sister, Abby, in orderly succession, and, when the home was broken up, were stored in the Morrell warehouse in New York. There, later, with all our Mother's household possessions, they were destroyed by fire, to the deep and lasting regret of all who knew the writers and the times they had passed through. Dr. Prentiss, our long-time friend and pastor, writes: "The destruction of Charley's letters from the front in the Morrell fire was an irreparable loss, and gave me, I remember, a real shock, for I knew how precious they would have been, sooner or later, not in your family history only, but in the inner personal history of the war." Book The History of Guilford Connecticut Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of Guilford Connecticut Classic Reprint written by Ralph Dunning Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Guilford, Connecticut Among the manuscripts left by the late Ralph D. Smith Esq., who had devoted his leisure hours during the last forty years of his life to the study of historical and genealogical subjects, was found an outline sketch of the history of Guilford, written some thirty years ago and doubtless laid aside with the hope of resuming his labors upon it when more abundant materials should have been collected for the purpose. The history of the early settlers of the town was a favorite subject of study. Although not a native, he showed an attachment to it fully equal to that ever shown by any one to the place of his birth. He was thoroughly acquainted with its records and keenly alive to everything that would add to its reputation. Had this historical sketch been filled up and completed by his own hands, it would have undoubtedly compared favorably, in accuracy and completeness, with the history of any town heretofore written. Still it seemed proper to save what he had prepared, even in its incomplete form, as something of great value to the student of local history, and as a foundation upon which future laborers might build a more complete and exhaustive history.
