They joined illicit mystic cults that engaged in rituals of physical mortification and sexual license, committed suicides in the throes of materialist fatalism, drank potions to induce consciousness-altering dreams, railed against the degrading effects of unfettered consumption, and ultimately renounced the feudal privileges that had for centuries defined their social existence. The explosive denouement was the French Revolution, during which God and king were toppled from their thrones.

I use the Biblical story of Israel’s journey from Egypt to Canaan in an allegorical sense to show how God, through the activities and resources of the Holy Trinity, tries to bring us to that place of living in grace, and how the devil, through the unholy trinity (the world, the flesh, and demonic resistance) seeks to thwart that journey. I focus on three fronts in the battle between the two trinities. On the first front, the devil works indirectly through the world system (Egypt) to deny us our freedom that we have due to the atonement. Living under the illusion of pleasure, we end up in extreme bondage. On the second front, the devil works indirectly through our flesh (Amalek) to hinder us from following the leadership of the Holy Spirit as He attempts to guide us into God’s grace. The writings of the Apostles and the fathers of the early Church are also studied, exploring key passages in the original Koine Greek. A trace of their struggles with disparate texts follows in order to understand the natures of Jesus and the Holy Spirit and the relationships between them and with God the Father. This account reveals how the understanding of these relationships led, even during the first Christian century, to an appreciation of the identity of God the Father, Jesus and the Holy Spirit and ultimately to the formation of the doctrine of the Trinity. During this process, the struggle of the first Church to be true to scripture and faithful to God was conducted in an atmosphere of hostility and persecution from several sources that often resulted in martyrdom for the faithful, all the while fighting heresy. As far as possible this text is based on contemporary sources, letting the early Church Fathers "speak for themselves." It becomes clear as the history unfolds, that the main motive forces driving the work forward were, i) their desire to understand the nature of God, ii) to understand the relationships between Jesus, the Holy Spirit and God the Father, iii) opposition in many forms, especially heresy, and iv) principally the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The formulation of the Creeds of Nicaea and Constantinople did not, unfortunately, put an end to dispute and so the views of subsequent generations of theologians are also considered.

It brings out the political influences which governed this second stage of the discussion in an illuminating way. A survey and bibliography round the book off.

Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus's words or Saint Paul's writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day. Both mistakes and intentional changes abound in the surviving manuscripts, making the original words difficult to reconstruct. For the first time, Ehrman reveals where and why these changes were made and how scholars go about reconstructing the original words of the New Testament as closely as possible. Ehrman makes the provocative case that many of our cherished biblical stories and widely held beliefs concerning the divinity of Jesus, the Trinity, and the divine origins of the Bible itself stem from both intentional and accidental alterations by scribes -- alterations that dramatically affected all subsequent versions of the Bible.
