Book Immigrants and the Labour Force

Download or read book Immigrants and the Labour Force written by Ravi Pendakur and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2000-07-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First, Canada's primary source for immigrants has shifted dramatically from the United Kingdom and Europe to countries outside Europe. Second there has been a remarkable transformation in the nature of work: Canada's economy has changed from relying on resource extraction to an emphasis on manufacturing, and presently is emerging as post-industrial and knowledge-based. Pendakur combines an analysis of parliamentary debates on immigration issues with an evaluation of the regulatory and policy changes that resulted from these discussions and an analysis of how the work of immigrants changed over a five-decade. He then provides both a political and quantitative analysis by looking at issues that affect not only immigrants but minorities born in Canada in order to assess the degree to which labour market discrimination exists and whether employment equity programs are needed.

Download or read book An Economic Sociology of Immigrant Life in Canada written by Abdolmohammad Kazemipur and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2004 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not long ago, the integration of immigrants in host societies was perceived mostly in terms of assimilation, an overly simplistic scenario, based on which immigrants would learn the language and culture of the native population, and the rest would just follow. However, the developments of the past two decades have shown just how complex this process can be. This new book shows the diverse experiences of various groups of immigrants. This book takes a fresh look at the experiences of immigrants to Canada. The contents of the book are based on over five years of research the author has carried out in Canada and elsewhere, using a variety of data sources, from quantitative census data through specially-designed survey information, to materials derived from qualitative research. The book is structured in such a way that it can be beneficial to a wide range of readers: those interested in in-depth examination of immigration issues, those leaning more towards narrative texts, and those looking only for general research trends and theoretical and policy implications. Book Immigration Unemployment Relationship

Download or read book Immigration Unemployment Relationship written by Asad Islam and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the relationship between unemployment and immigration in Canada. The bi-directional causality test finds no evidence of a significant effect of Canadian immigration on unemployment. Cointegration tests indicate that there is no observed increase in aggregate unemployment due to immigration in the long run. The results from the causality test based on the vector error correction model confirm that, in the short run, past unemployment does cause (less) immigration but not vice versa. There is also a long-run positive relationship among per-capita GDP, immigration rate and real wages. The results indicate that, in the short-run, more immigration is possibly associated with attractive Canadian immigration policies, and in the long-run, as the labour market adjusts, Canadian-born workers are likely to benefit from increased migration.

Download or read book No Canadian Experience No Job Fact Or Myth a Qualitative Inquiry of Newcomers Perceptions and Experiences with the Labour Market written by Elizabeth Gawronski and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research in immigrants' participation in the Canadian labour market indicates above average levels of unemployment, and points to the severe repercussions to the individual and the community. This study attempts to explore the perceptions and labour market experiences of nine newcomers, and its implications on immigrants' integration and adult language programmes. It finds that upon arrival in Canada, most participants experienced severe difficulties. It observes that these newcomers initially believed 'Canadian experience' to be their greatest barrier to employment, and that initial perception had changed overtime. It also observes that participation in an ESL/workplace preparation programme assisted these recent immigrants in labour market integration. All of the participants secured related employment or co-op placements which led to job offers. Overall, the findings are informative for public and policy decision-makers about immigrants' integration, and useful for future design of settlement policies and adult ESL programmes.
