Book excerpt: After a traumatic military tour in the Middle East, Daniel "Uneasy" Truce returns home with PTSD. Something happened there. Something he never wants to come out. A few hand shakes later, Truce lands a new job in a ragtag investigations unit. He may be emotionally awkward, but he's got a knack for reading body language. Problem is, his boss hates him. Calls him mentally unsound. She gives Truce the dirty work. That's how he ends up with "the crazy old bat" case. At 11 a.m. every morning, June drops by her local police station to report a murder she witnessed. Initially the cops took her seriously. They visit the alleged victim's home to find him very much alive. But June won't give up, and her daily appearances become a nuisance. Truce is tasked to investigate. To shut her up. Soon June winds up dead—hit by a car. Was it really an accident? Truce thinks there's more to the case. That maybe someone just doesn’t want the truth to come out ... Only the Dead Know is the first book in the Daniel 'Uneasy' Truce Mystery series. About the author Caroline Dunford lives in Scotland in a cottage by the sea with her partner and her two young sons. As all authors are required to have as much life experience as possible she has been, at various times, a drama coach, an archery instructor, a counsellor, a qualified psychotherapist, a charity worker, a journalist, a voice actor, a hypnotherapist, and a playwright. Today she writes mainly novels, the odd (often very odd) short story, theatre plays, the occasional article, teaches and mentors. She can't remember a time when she didn't write or tell stories and seriously doubts that she could remain sane if she stopped doing so.

Download or read book Uneasy Peace written by Patrick Sharkey and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2019-02-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late ’90s to the mid-2010s, American cities experienced an astonishing drop in violent crime, dramatically changing urban life. In many cases, places once characterized by decay and abandonment are now thriving, the fear of death by gunshot wound replaced by concern about skyrocketing rents. In Uneasy Peace, Patrick Sharkey, “the leading young scholar of urban crime and concentrated poverty” (Richard Florida, author of The Rise of the Creative Class and The New Urban Crisis) reveals the striking effects: improved school test scores, because children are better able to learn when not traumatized by nearby violence; better chances that poor children will rise into the middle class; and a marked increase in the life expectancy of African American men. Some of the forces that brought about safer streets—such as the intensive efforts made by local organizations to confront violence in their own communities—have been positive, Sharkey explains. But the drop in violent crime has also come at the high cost of aggressive policing and mass incarceration. From Harlem to South Los Angeles, Sharkey draws on original data and textured accounts of neighborhoods across the country to document the most successful proven strategies for combating violent crime and to lay out innovative and necessary approaches to the problem of violence. At a time when crime is rising again, the issue of police brutality has taken center stage, and powerful political forces seek to disinvest in cities, the insights in this book are indispensable.

Book excerpt: Illuminations features topics of nature, religion, and memories. Joseph Shenk Hertzler's insights into and perspective on everyday occurrences are a clear statement of his beliefs and faith. Joseph's deep religious and spiritual convictions of his Mennonite heritage and pacifism radiate from his poetry. Many of his poems contain imagery that highlights his love of gardening and passion for birds. Poetry summoned Joseph to write. His eloquence in combining words to describe and tell a story was put to use for many years writing sermons, entertaining friends and family. Poetry gave him freedom to explain his surroundings, experiences and learnings. During winter months when gardening was put on hold, writing poetry allowed him an outlet that tantalized and challenged his mind. The tradition of Southern storytelling shines through in the Collective Memories and Remembrances sections. His boyhood along the Warwick River in Virginia and in central Florida provide material for amusing tales. Joseph's poetry illuminates life in its many facets, including death. Illuminations overflows with his humor, wisdom and incredible insight into the world we all share and together call home.

Book Churchill on the Home Front 1900 1955

Download or read book Churchill on the Home Front 1900 1955 written by Paul Addison and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The best one-volume study of Churchill yet available.' David Cannadine, Observer 'Magisterial.' Vernon Bogdanor, New Statesman 'A tour de force... A masterly chronicle of Churchill as a domestic figure rather than as the bulldog wartime leader, and one of the most subtle portraits of him as a politician. Addison revises the view of Churchill as uninterested and out of his depth in domestic affairs, painting instead a nuanced picture of a canny parliamentarian. Churchill changed parties twice but managed to accomplish the change, writes Addison, 'with exceptional dexterity', making it appear as if he were maintaining his principles while the parties changed theirs... Addison's most interesting assertion is that the rise of Hitler saved Churchill from drifting into right-wing irrelevance. Most impressively, Addison doesn't settle for easy classifications, admitting that 'Churchill... is a man of whom almost everything that can be said is true in part.'' Kirkus Review
