Book excerpt: In a global economy, multinational companies often operate in jurisdictions where governments are either unable or unwilling to uphold even the basic human rights of their citizens. The expectation that companies respect human rights in their own operations and in their business relationships is now a business reality that corporations need to respond to. Business and Human Rights: From Principles to Practice is the first comprehensive and interdisciplinary textbook that addresses these issues. It examines the regulatory framework that grounds the business and human rights debate and highlights the business and legal challenges faced by companies and stakeholders in improving respect for human rights, exploring such topics as: the regulatory framework that grounds the business and human rights debate, challenges faced by companies and stakeholders in improving human rights, industry-specific human rights standards, current mechanisms to hold corporations to account, future challenges for business and human rights. With supporting case studies throughout, this text provides an overview of current themes in the field and guidance on practical implementation, demonstrating that a thorough understanding of the human rights challenges faced by business is now vital in any business context.

Book The Shadow Welfare State

Download or read book The Shadow Welfare State written by Marie Gottschalk and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why, in the recent campaigns for universal health care, did organized labor maintain its support of employer-mandated insurance? Did labor's weakened condition prevent it from endorsing national health insurance? Marie Gottschalk demonstrates here that the unions' surprising stance was a consequence of the peculiarly private nature of social policy in the United States. Her book combines a much-needed account of labor's important role in determining health care policy with a bold and incisive analysis of the American welfare state. Gottschalk stresses that, in the United States, the social welfare system is anchored in the private sector but backed by government policy. As a result, the private sector is a key political battlefield where business, labor, the state, and employees hotly contest matters such as health care. She maintains that the shadow welfare state of job-based benefits shaped the manner in which labor defined its policy interests and strategies. As evidence, Gottschalk examines the influence of the Taft-Hartley health and welfare funds, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (E.R.I.S.A.), and experience-rated health insurance, showing how they constrained labor from supporting universal health care. Labor, Gottschalk asserts, missed an important opportunity to develop a broader progressive agenda. She challenges the movement to establish a position on health care that addresses the growing ranks of Americans without insurance, the restructuring of the U.S. economy, and the political travails of the unions themselves.

Book Giambattista Della Porta Dramatist

Download or read book Giambattista Della Porta Dramatist written by Louise George Clubb and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Renaissance scholars generally agree that Della Porta was the finest comic playwright of his generation in Italy, no detailed analysis of these plays and of their considerable influence outside Italy has previously appeared. One of the most famous men of his time in the field of scientific investigation, Della Porta wrote plays for relaxation and, on occasion, to camouflage controversial aspects of his scientific research from the Inquisitions. Today his works in science are largely forgotten and his right to fame rests on the plays. This book brings together the available facts of Della Porta's rich and often mysterious life and closely examines his dramatic works as part of the Italian literary scene in late Renaissance. Originally published in 1965. Book Modes of Uncertainty

Download or read book Modes of Uncertainty written by Limor Samimian-Darash and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of risk, while receiving a great deal of scholarly attention, cannot fully explain the forms of uncertainty that we see around the world today. Distinguishing between danger, risk, and uncertainty, the essays in this book, by a group of leading junior scholars, consider problems of uncertainty in various domainsfinance and markets, security and humanitarianism, environment and health. While not ignoring previous scholarship on risk, this volume provides new analytical tools and case studies for understanding the many forms of uncertainty prevalent today. What kinds of truth claims about the future are common? What interventions are considered appropriate? What modes of subjectivity are produced within these policy frameworks? "Modes of Uncertainty" clears the path to answering these questions, among others, advancing our understanding of the forms of uncertainty that concern us all."
