Download or read book The U S Military s Force Structure A Primer written by Congress, Congressional Budget Office (U.S.) and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Detailed Military Spending Cost Analysis by the CBO to Better Inform Policymakers and the Public In this report, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) analyzes the structure and cost of the military from the perspective of major combat units, such as Army brigades, Navy aircraft carrier strike groups, Marine Corps task forces, and Air Force squadrons. CBO allocates most of the O&S budget and DoD's total number of military personnel among major combat units-- and their associated support units and overhead activities--to provide a clearer picture of the size and cost of the major elements of the military's force structure. Such information can help policymakers evaluate proposals to change the structure or budget of the armed forces and better inform the general public. Tables and Figures, including illustrations of equipment, personnel and other data are included to provide an easy method to understand this topic. Book The U S Military s Force Structure a Primer

Download or read book The U S Military s Force Structure a Primer written by Congress of the States and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: n fiscal year 2015, the Department of Defense (DoD) spent a total of roughly $390 billion on operation and support (O&S) of military units. The O&S budget covers the costs associated with the day-to-day running of units. Those costs include pay and benefits for military personnel, compensation for most civilian employees, health care costs for military and civilian personnel, and the daily expenses of operating a unit, such as equipment maintenance, training, support contractors, and so on. The O&S budget makes up about two-thirds of DoD's total "base" budget, which is the defense budget excluding additional funds provided specifically for wartime operations. (The rest of DoD's base budget is spent on acquiring weapon systems and constructing buildings and other infrastructure.) The size and complexity of the U.S. armed forces can make it difficult to determine how the O&S budget is distributed among units. In this report, the Congressional Budget Office analyzes the structure and cost of the military from the perspective of major combat units, such as Army brigades, Navy aircraft carrier strike groups, Marine Corps task forces, and Air Force squadrons. CBO allocates most of the O&S budget and DoD's total number of military personnel among major combat units- and their associated support units and overhead activities- to provide a clearer picture of the size and cost of the major elements of the military's force structure. Such information can help policymakers evaluate proposals to change the structure or budget of the armed forces. CBO's analysis indicates that major combat units by themselves account for roughly one-quarter of DoD's operation and support costs and contain about one-third of DoD's military personnel. Most of the rest of DoD's O&S costs and military personnel are associated either with units that support major combat units (which CBO considers part of the cost of maintaining fully supported major combat units) or with overhead activities necessary for manning, equipping, and training combat and support units. In addition, the total operating costs associated with a major combat unit include a share of the costs of "defensewide" activities, such as the Defense Health Program, that provide various forms of administrative support to DoD as a whole.

Book The U S Military s Force Structure

Download or read book The U S Military s Force Structure written by Adam Talaber and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primer contains entries that describe the size, costs, and functions of every major element of the military’s force structure. Those elements include the major combat units that form the traditional back-bone of the armed forces, such as armored brigades, aircraft carrier strike groups, and tactical aircraft squadrons. They also include specialized organizations that provide specific capabilities to DoD, such as special-operations forces and missile defense. CBO’s analysis of the military’s force structure focuses on the day-to-day operating costs covered by DoD’s operation and support (O&S) budget. That budget, which has typically totaled more than $400 billion a year in recent years, excludes spending to buy weapon systems, build military facilities, and conduct ongoing military operations.

Book excerpt: "This primer is designed to be a reference work rather than a linear narrative. Chapter 1 describes CBO's conceptual approach to analyzing the military's force structure and costs, and the following three chapters discuss the particular organizational structures and roles of the Department of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. All of the department's major types of combat unit have their own entries, which discuss the size, cost, function, advantages, disadvantages, and past use of that type of unit. The final chapter includes similar entries for some major defense-wide organizations, such as Special Operations Command and the military's health care system. Each chapter also focuses on some special topics that are important for understanding the military's force structure, such as the integration of different types of units or the military's ability to conduct certain kinds of operations"--Page 5.

Book Understanding the U S Military

Download or read book Understanding the U S Military written by Katherine Carroll and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-11 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an accessible introduction to the U.S. military as an institution and provides insights into the military’s structure and norms. Designed for undergraduate students, the book offers an interdisciplinary overview of America’s armed forces through three critical lenses. First, it introduces the military’s constitutional and historical context. Second, it presents concise factual information chosen for its relevance to the military’s structures, procedures, norms, and varied activities. Finally, it intersperses these facts with debates, theories, and questions to spark student interest, class discussion, and further research. The text is written for the beginner but covers complex topics such as force structure and the defense budget. With contributions informed by both scholarly approaches and long military careers, the book will prepare students for further studies in international relations, civil-military relations, or U.S. foreign policy. It also encourages critical thinking, elucidating an institution that undergraduates and other civilians too often perceive as both baffling and above reproach. This book will be of much interest to students of the U.S. military, civil-military relations, U.S. politics, and public policy.
