Book Brazil s Second Chance

Download or read book Brazil s Second Chance written by Lincoln Gordon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2004-05-13 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil is currently in a critical phase of a decades-long transformation from a patrimonial society--based on the cultivation and export of sugar and coffee--to a modernized industrial and service economy with effective democratic governance. It is the world's fifth largest nation-state in area and population, and ranks eighth in total economic output. Since World War II, Brazil has been a leader in international trade governance and negotiation, playing an important part in development of the GATT and the WTO. Currently, the country is a major factor in negotiations toward a hemispherewide Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA). However, Brazil's political record in the past half century has been erratic and it has struggled with high inflation and balance-of-payment deficits. In this major new work, a former American ambassador to Brazil examines the social, political, and economic history of the country since the 1930s and discusses whether Brazil is now ready to assume a place as an important participant among First World nations.

Book The Politics of Capitalist Transformation

Download or read book The Politics of Capitalist Transformation written by Jeff Seward and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Capitalist Transformation is the only book-length study of the highly protectionist Brazilian informatics policy from its origins in the early 1970s to the collapse of the market reserve in the early 1990s and its impact in subsequent decades. Jeff Seward provides a sophisticated political analysis of how state activists constructed high levels of state autonomy to try to shift Brazil to a new variety of capitalism by eclipsing the multinational companies (especially IBM) that dominated the Brazilian computer sector and replacing them with local companies with 100 percent Brazilian technology and ownership. This ambitious policy required repeated shifts of political strategy and policymaking institutions to respond to a constantly changing economic and political environment as Brazil made a dramatic transition from military dictatorship to democracy. The innovative framework to analyze state autonomy and the sophisticated political analysis of the policymaking process will be of interest to scholars and students of Brazilian and Latin American political economy, varieties of capitalism theory, state theory, democratic transition theory, and high technology policymaking in developing countries.

Book Coalitions and Compliance

Download or read book Coalitions and Compliance written by Kenneth C. Shadlen and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coalitions and Compliance examines how international changes can reconfigure domestic politics. Since the late 1980s, developing countries have been subject to intense pressures regarding intellectual property rights. These pressures have been exceptionally controversial in the area of pharmaceuticals. Historically, fearing the economic and social costs of providing private property rights over knowledge, developing countries did not allow drugs to be patented. Now they must do so, an obligation with significant implications for industrial development and public health. This book analyses different forms of compliance with this new imperative in Latin America, comparing the politics of pharmaceutical patenting in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. Coalitions and Compliance focuses on two periods of patent politics: initial conflicts over how to introduce drug patents, and then subsequent conflicts over how these new patent systems function. In contrast to explanations of national policy choice based on external pressures, domestic institutions, or Presidents' ideological orientations, this book attributes cross-national and longitudinal variation to the ways that changing social structures constrain or enable political leaders' strategies to construct and sustain supportive coalitions. The analysis begins with assessment of the relative resources and capabilities of the transnational and national pharmaceutical sectors, and these rival actors' efforts to attract allies. Emphasis is placed on two ways that social structures are transformed so as to affect coalition-building possibilities: how exporters fearing the loss of preferential market access may be converted into allies of transnational drug firms, and differential patterns of adjustment among state and societal actors that are inspired by the introduction of new policies. It is within the changing structural conditions produced by these two processes that political leaders build coalitions in support of different forms of compliance.

Book excerpt: Challenges from Japan, opportunities in the new European Community, and prospects for developing countries’ economies all revolve around trade and all have implications for U.S. economic strengths and interests. The cases in this book have been selected to illustrate a variety of contemporary trade policies, practices, and partners. The volume begins with an overview of the multilateral trade regime embodied in the GATT; it then moves on to specifics, including two different cases of U.S.-Japanese exchanges (goods versus services), trade strategies of Brazil as a newly industrializing country, and the EC as the world’s largest trader. Throughout the cases, larger themes are traced, connecting trade with economic policy, foreign policy with domestic politics, and change in U.S. economic strength with the rise of new economic powers in the world arena.
