This book was released on 2018-06-10 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sunday reading. The history of the two wealthy farmers By Hannah More Hannah More (2 February 1745 - 7 September 1833) was an English religious writer and philanthropist, remembered as a poet and playwright in the circle of Johnson, Reynolds and Garrick, as a writer on moral and religious subjects, and as a practical philanthropist. Born in Bristol, she taught at a school established there by her father and began writing plays. She became involved with the London literary elite as a leading Bluestocking member. Her plays and poetry became more evangelical and she joined a group campaigning against the slave trade. In the 1790s she wrote several Cheap Repository Tracts on moral, religious and political topics, for distribution to the literate poor. Meanwhile, she did increasing philanthropic work in the Mendip area, encouraged by William Wilberforce. Book Fertilizer Quality and its Impacts on Technical Efficiency and Use Intensity in the North China Plain

Download or read book Fertilizer Quality and its Impacts on Technical Efficiency and Use Intensity in the North China Plain written by Ling Yee Khor and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2014-11-19 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fertilizer has helped the growth of agriculture for decades. However, its overuse in some regions has caused environmental and health problems due to pollution and contamination of groundwater. Fertilizer quality is another cause for concern in many countries, as the actual nutrient content may not match the labeled content on the packaging. The North China Plain is a region affected by both fertilizer overuse and quality problems. This study delves into the issue using economic models and survey data of farm households. Is the effectiveness of fertilizer overstated? How do farmers respond to uncertainty in fertilizer quality? Can they differentiate between good and poor quality fertilizer?

Book excerpt: A powerful movement is happening in farming today—farmers are reconnecting with their roots to fight climate change. For one woman, that’s meant learning her tribe’s history to help bring back the buffalo. For another, it’s meant preserving forest purchased by her great-great-uncle, among the first wave of African Americans to buy land. Others are rejecting monoculture to grow corn, beans, and squash the way farmers in Mexico have done for centuries. Still others are rotating crops for the native cuisines of those who fled the “American wars” in Southeast Asia. In Healing Grounds, Liz Carlisle tells the stories of Indigenous, Black, Latinx, and Asian American farmers who are reviving their ancestors’ methods of growing food—techniques long suppressed by the industrial food system. These farmers are restoring native prairies, nurturing beneficial fungi, and enriching soil health. While feeding their communities and revitalizing cultural ties to land, they are steadily stitching ecosystems back together and repairing the natural carbon cycle. This, Carlisle shows, is the true regenerative agriculture – not merely a set of technical tricks for storing CO2 in the ground, but a holistic approach that values diversity in both plants and people. Cultivating this kind of regenerative farming will require reckoning with our nation’s agricultural history—a history marked by discrimination and displacement. And it will ultimately require dismantling power structures that have blocked many farmers of color from owning land or building wealth. The task is great, but so is its promise. By coming together to restore these farmlands, we can not only heal our planet, we can heal our communities and ourselves.

Book Farm Incomes Wealth and Agricultural Policy

Download or read book Farm Incomes Wealth and Agricultural Policy written by Berkeley Hill and published by CABI. This book was released on 2012 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has been supporting the incomes of the European Union's agricultural community for half a century. Despite this, there is still no official system in place to track the economic wellbeing of farmers and their families. This book examines the evidence on the overall wealth of farming households, and concludes that in nearly all member states, they are not generally a poor sector of society, with disposable incomes that are similar to, or exceed, the national average. In this updated edition, the author discusses the latest evidence, makes recommendations for gathering better information, and considers the implications for the CAP as we enter the second decade of the 21st century.
