The leadership crisis has been most noticeable within the Catholic Primary School sector, where statistics have consistently shown an issue with recruiting people to headship positions. This book considers the reasons for the crisis and looks at potential solutions. It identifies what the leadership crisis encompasses from the negativity of the education system (including headship accountability, the work-life balance, and salary), whilst also offsetting this with possible supporting solutions, such as the value of acting headship, succession planning and talent spotting from the beginning of a teacher’s career.

This guidebook, intended for Catholic-school principals, presents a detailed plan to help schools establish crisis-management teams and offers directions for their operation. Chapter 1 presents an overview of crisis management and focuses on how this concept differs in Catholic schools and public schools. Chapter 2 offers suggestions for developing a crisis-management team within a school. The third chapter focuses on a systematic plan for assessing the level of crisis, involving the team in a process that allows them to develop a more intimate knowledge of the school site and buildings. Team training and preparing for crisis response are discussed in the fourth chapter. The role of the principal in developing the team and working with the team during an actual crisis is the focus of chapter 5. Chapter 6 provides suggestions for training and crisis management from the teacher's perspective. The seventh chapter considers how the faith dimension serves as a resource during times of crisis, which can help students deal with a crisis event. Chapter 8 offers suggestions and a rationale for incorporating mental health professionals in a coordinated crisis-response program. Tips for dealing with parents are offered in chapter 9. Chapter 10 examines the role played by the priest/pastor during a school-related emergency, and chapter 11 summarizes the themes of the book. Appendices contain an outline for developing a crisis-team response manual, a sample agenda for a crisis-team workshop, and a series of practice simulations. The program advocates providing tools for youth to critique and change their surroundings, while also learning the codes of power that provide them a repertoire of navigational means for producing satisfying lives. Rather than arguing that the program can be replicated or taken to scale in different contexts, the editors focus on how their process of looking inward to consider Mexican cultures enabled them to develop an appropriate educational program to address Mexico's historically low literacy rates. They show that if all teaching and learning is context-dependent, then focusing on the process of program development, rather than on the outcomes that may or may not be easily applied to other settings, is appropriate for global educators seeking to provide literacy teacher education grounded in national concerns and challenges. The volume provides a process model for developing an organic program designed to address needs in a national context, especially one grounded in both colonial and heritage cultures and one in which literacy is understood as a tool for social critique, redress, advancement, and equity.
