Book excerpt: Escape into this time travel romance series by #1 New York Times bestselling fantasy author Kelley Armstrong… Thorne Manor has always been haunted…and it has always haunted Bronwyn Dale. As a young girl, Bronwyn could pass through a time slip in her great-aunt's house, where she visited William Thorne, a boy her own age, born two centuries earlier. After a family tragedy, the house was shuttered and Bronwyn was convinced that William existed only in her imagination. Now, twenty years later Bronwyn inherits Thorne Manor. And when she returns, William is waiting. William Thorne is no longer the boy she remembers. He’s a difficult and tempestuous man, his own life marred by tragedy and a scandal that had him retreating to self-imposed exile in his beloved moors. He’s also none too pleased with Bronwyn for abandoning him all those years ago. As their friendship rekindles and sparks into something more, Bronwyn must also deal with ghosts in the present version of the house. Soon she realizes they are linked to William and the secret scandal that drove him back to Thorne Manor. To build a future, Bronwyn must confront the past. * * * * * Keywords: award-winning novel; time travel novel; time slip; Victorian romance; bestselling author; gothic; second chance at love; cold-case mystery; haunted house; Yorkshire moors; first in series; no cliffhangers

Book excerpt: This is a love story set in the middle of a fantastic adventure. Jason loves flying. While he earns his living as a charter pilot, for fun he races his World War II vintage P-51 Mustang. When he is assigned to fly a single passenger to Colorado, he has no idea that this charter flight will change his life forever. It is not until he meets the passenger at the airplane that he is pleasantly surprised to discover that she is an ex-girlfriend, Juneko. They had separated several years ago and had not had contact since. Their meeting seemed to be a chance encounter of old friends, but fate shows that is not so. A hidden intelligence has much greater plans for them beyond the completion of a simple charter flight. Their flight is intercepted and redirected to another world. Surprisingly the inhabitants appear to be human and their technology is not that different from the technology the two travelers left behind on Earth although there are a few startling differences. The reasons for these similarities and differences become clear in time. Initially it causes the two travelers no end of confusion. Juneko and Jason have arrived at a planet that is on the brink of a worldwide war. An evil presence is bent on using the countries it already controls to conquer the rest. Jason's and Juneko's main questions are: how did they get there, why were they brought there, and how can they get home. Even as they try to find the answers to these questions they are drawn into the international tensions that are about to produce open conflict on a global basis. There are no nuclear weapons here to produce brief, impersonal but highly deadly war. These battles will be fought by soldiers, sailors, and pilots on a much more intimate basis. As Jason and Juneko befriend the people trying to stave off the evil forces that are driving this planet to war, they find that their own values drive them to sign up to join the military and help. Jason and Juneko, previously separated for years, now find that the spark of love between them still exists. The uncertainty of war gives their relationship an urgency that they can hardly stop. Always in the back of their minds are the questions of why they are there and how can they get home. Their duties in the war pull them apart for a time and the stresses of day to day fighting put survival ahead of thoughts of getting home. Still they both wonder what strange TWIST OF FATE brought them to this world and this war. In time they begin to glimmer the truth but it is a truth that shocks them to their core beings. Their love, the war, and the strange destiny that brought them to this place change them both forever.

Book excerpt: Miguel Ruiz is a Spanish veteran exiled in France who was a member of “La Nueve” ("The Nine"), a company of men that went straight from fighting for their homeland in the Spanish Civil War to battles spanning the globe in WWII. Their years-long trek across Europe and Africa was spurred on by their love for their country and their hatred for brutal dictatorships. Roca uses the composite character Ruiz’s “memories” to tell a story that’s an ode to a generation that bravely stood up to, and beat back, violent fascism.

Book excerpt: "Daisy doesn't believe love is ever-lasting, so it's ironic as hell that she parlayed a business degree into a wedding planning business. More ironic still is her latest job bringing her back into contact with the man who'd taught her that love can't last.Is the one you can't have...To say Diego has been taught the hard way to bury emotions is an understatement. But when he's called home to help the brother he hasn't seen or spoken to in years, that's one thing. It's another entirely to also come face to face with the first woman he ever loved. First and only...Can love conquer all?Daisy's learned to depend only on herself, and Diego is and always has been an island of one. And yet when they're together, even when they're bickering, still wary and haunted by memories of what was ... it's magic. The question is, how to find their way back to each other...?"--Publisher description.

Book excerpt: How tiny variations in our personal DNA can determine how we look, how we behave, how we get sick, and how we get well. News stories report almost daily on the remarkable progress scientists are making in unraveling the genetic basis of disease and behavior. Meanwhile, new technologies are rapidly reducing the cost of reading someone's personal DNA (all six billion letters of it). Within the next ten years, hospitals may present parents with their newborn's complete DNA code along with her footprints and APGAR score. In Genetic Twists of Fate, distinguished geneticists Stanley Fields and Mark Johnston help us make sense of the genetic revolution that is upon us. Fields and Johnston tell real life stories that hinge on the inheritance of one tiny change rather than another in an individual's DNA: a mother wrongly accused of poisoning her young son when the true killer was a genetic disorder; the screen siren who could no longer remember her lines because of Alzheimer's disease; and the president who was treated with rat poison to prevent another heart attack. In an engaging and accessible style, Fields and Johnston explain what our personal DNA code is, how a few differences in its long list of DNA letters makes each of us unique, and how that code influences our appearance, our behavior, and our risk for such common diseases as diabetes or cancer.

Book excerpt: From Ancient Greece to contemporary times, themes of fate and destiny have served as a central worldview for many. These compelling ideas have guided those in battle, and provided influence and inspirations for politicians, philosophers, and artists. Despite a pervasive concern with fate, we find that an explicit discussion of this construct is absent from psychological theory. Twist of Fate reconciles contemporary psychological research with the ancient and frequently held position of fatalism that was common in that era. The Greek mythological history of the "Moirae" (the triad of goddesses known as the "Fates") offers a unique perspective on human beings by illustrating how fate and destiny influence a variety of behaviors such as drug addiction, spirituality, sexual activity, aggression, and other applied psychological topics. An analysis of the "Moirae" integrates diverse ideas from evolutionary psychology, neuroscience, psychoanalysis, and Nietzsche's philosophy into a fatalistic view of the human personality. The analysis raises the issues of possibilities for personal change, the role of clinical interventions, and what role freedom actually plays in the human experience. Twist of Fate also accounts for recent developments in personality theory and research by shedding new light on findings from evolutionary psychology, narrative theory, and trait psychology. The result is an integrative personality theory that takes the reader from Nietzsche to neuroscience.
