It is home to Creatures of Legend, all-powerful gods and goddesses, lost Ancients, reclusive First Bloods, and the Guardian of the Core. All life flows in and out of the system. Should it cease, the universe ceases to exist as well. That is why it is the Guardian’s duty to protect the system at all costs. However, his time is coming to a close and he needs to hold Trials to select his next apprentice. A haughty, yet competent prince, Hydro Paen, longs to seize the Power of the Guardian and show to everyone who has doubted him that he is worthy of his lineage. Under the guidance of his uncle, orphan Eirek Mourse participates, hoping only to survive such Trials and having no idea how he was even accepted in the first place. And a tactician, Zain Berrese, always living in the shadow of his stepbrother’s accomplishments, wants to prove that he is capable of overcoming his haunted past and excelling further than his rivals. None of these participants, however, know that the Trials will pit them against others who are just as conniving, talented, and motivated to win. None of them know that the Trials will test them in ways unimaginable. And none of them know that, by participating, it might mean the rendering of their identity and the forfeiting of their lives. With their lives and identities on the line, will one of these would-be heroes find the inner strength and wisdom to emerge a champion and impress the Guardian before the system collapses? A perfect sci-fantasy story for those who love Game of Thrones, Hunger Games, and Eragon. Buy today and experience the Trials for yourself!

Book excerpt: The rifts within Earth Force continue to widen as Jasper and his friends head back into space in the third novel in what Shannon Messenger calls the “richly detailed, highly imaginative” Bounders series! Jasper can’t wait for his sister, Addy, to finally join him at the EarthBound Academy. Jasper and his friends are certain that the Alks are laying a trap for Earth Force. But with Admiral Eames blind to the danger, Jasper and his pod mates must take matters into their own hands. Will Jasper’s pod disobey direct orders to uncover the Alks’s true plans? And if so, will the kids be able to stop them before their treachery ripples across the entire galaxy? They need to act fast or it could mean devastation for Earth Force and death for the Bounders—including Addy.

Book Advances in the Study of Gas Hydrates

Download or read book Advances in the Study of Gas Hydrates written by Charles E. Taylor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book had its genesis in a symposium on gas hydrates presented at the 2003 Spring National Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. The symposium consisted of twenty papers presented in four sessions over two days. Additional guest authors were invited to provide continuity and cover topics not addressed during the symposium. Gas hydrates are a unique class of chemical compounds where molecules of one compound (the guest material) are enclosed, without bonding chemically, within an open solid lattice composed of another compound (the host material). These types of configurations are known as clathrates. The guest molecules, u- ally gases, are of an appropriate size such that they fit within the cage formed by the host material. Commonexamples of gas hydrates are carbon dioxide/water and methane/water clathrates. At standard pressure and temperature, methane hydrate contains by volume 180 times as much methane as hydrate. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has estimated that there is more organic carbon c- tained as methane hydrate than all other forms of fossil fuels combined. In fact, methane hydrates could provide a clean source of energy for several centuries. Clathrate compounds were first discovered in the early 1800s when Humphrey Davy and Michael Faraday were experimenting with chlorine-water mixtures.

Book excerpt: Jasper and Mira must escape the Rift and deliver the Youli’s message to Earth Force before it’s too late in this action-packed fourth novel in what Shannon Messenger calls the “richly detailed, highly imaginative” Bounders series! After escaping the Youli’s attack on Alkalinia, Jasper and Mira find themselves trapped with the lost aeronauts in the rift, a rip in space where time moves differently. For every minute they spend in the rift, they are losing days back home. Just when Jasper fears they’ll be stuck in limbo forever, the most unlikely ally shows up: the Youli. The Youli promise to rescue everyone in the rift, but their help comes at a price. First, Jasper must tell Earth Force that the Youli want peace. And second, Mira can’t return with Jasper. She has to leave with the Youli. Back home, almost a year has passed. The Youli war is public, Bounders are in space full-time, and Jasper’s pod is divided. Cole and Lucy have been promoted. Marco and Addy are missing. Jasper delivers the Youli’s message, but the admiral isn’t interested in peace talks. Instead, she sends Jasper and the aeronauts on a publicity tour of Earth to build support for the war. At first, Jasper revels in the spotlight. But it soon becomes clear that if Jasper doesn’t convince Earth Force to stop fighting—and soon—there won’t be an Earth left to fight for, and he may never see Mira again.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea Trial brings the reader along on a very detailed odyssey ranging from the authors days as a merchant marine cadet at a state maritime academy in the early sixties to his more-than-a-quarter century of service with the US Coast Guard both on board the ship and in the marine safety program. Written by a licensed merchant marine engineer, the point of view of this book is one that is rarely seen: someone speaking from the deck plates in the boiler room rather than the traditional view from the bridge. The book details various voyages, safety inspections, casualties, fires, repairs, oil spills, and sea trials that occurred during that time. It is a look at the work of hundreds of Coast Guard sailors and Marine Inspection personnel whose story rarely, if ever, gets told.

Book excerpt: Jasper and his friends must find a way to make peace between Earth and the Youli aliens before the Youli destroy the human race in this finale of the Bounders series, which Shannon Messenger calls “richly detailed, highly imaginative.” Jasper doesn’t know how his life got so messed up. Was it when Mira decided to leave him for the Youli aliens? Was it discovering his former pod now divided in a war between Earth Force and the Resistance? Or was it when the Youli gave Earth an ultimatum: Join the Intragalactic Council or be destroyed? Now the Youli have invited Jasper’s pod to visit their world. For Jasper, this means a chance to get his friends back on the same team. It also means seeing Mira again, and hopefully convincing her to come home. But once on the Youli planet, Jasper realizes there’s something off about Mira. She’s hiding a secret, and the more he pushes her, the more she avoids him. Meanwhile, the Intragalactic Summit approaches, a meeting that will decide the fate of Earth. But Jasper has a nagging feeling that Earth Force will sabotage the Summit—and then suffer the Youli’s wrath. And how can Jasper convince Earth to unite if he can’t even unite his friends? With humanity’s future on the brink of destruction, Jasper and his friends must learn that they’re stronger together if they have any shot at saving Earth.

Set against the backdrop of American history, politics, and law, God on Trial relates the stories of six recent cases in communities that have become battlefields in America's growing religious wars.
