Book The True History of Mental Science

Download or read book The True History of Mental Science written by Julius a Dresser and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-26 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains Julius A. Dresser's summary of mental science and the ability to heal the sick with mental and spiritual power. As the son of Horatio Dresser - an acquaintance and adherent of Phineas Quimby, the founder of the New Thought movement - Julius felt obliged to carry on his father's legacy by explaining the beliefs he held. Citing both ancient philosophy and religion, Julius begins by saying knowledge of mental healing is neither new nor novel: rather, it has practiced through history. Referring repeatedly to Christianity and Jesus Christ as an example of mental healing in action, Dresser aims to illustrate how P. P. Quimby rediscovered it. His experiences with tuberculosis, where conventional medicine in the form of camomile did more harm than good, are detailed. Quimby would later go on to assert that exciting, uplifting experiences such as riding a horse did far more for his tuberculosis than any other method.

Popular in the early 20th century, the idea that the miracles of Jesus Christ could be demonstrably accomplished in the modern day fascinated many. P. P. Quimby and Horatio Dresser were popular for years; their core assertions were that, with enough mental training and discipline, people could heal themselves and others by force of spiritual strength. Today the legacy of the Quimby and the Dressers survives in the form of the New Thought movement which today claims many followers. However, the notion of mental healing and mental science as a viable method of curing has - for the most part - fallen out of favor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The True History of Mental Science: The Facts Concerning the Discovery of Mental Healing The foundation principles of what we now term Mental Science are shown by history to have been largely understood by the philosophers of all ages. The philosophy of Plato, who flourished four hun dred years before Christ, was essentially idealistic and the same idealism is set forth in different forms by leading thinkers of succeeding genera tions, notably by Bishop Berkeley, in the seven teenth century. But, while these thinkers mainly agreed that all reality is in the realm of spirit, of which what we see is only an emanation or mani festation, they all failed to apply their philosophy to the healing of disease. Of those who had this understanding previous to our time, only Jesus and his disciples applied it to relieving human ills. All others devoted their teachings simply to modifying and forming character, and to the development of a system of metaphysics. Book Christian Science on Trial

Download or read book Christian Science on Trial written by Rennie B. Schoepflin and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-05-22 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Christian Science on Trial, historian Rennie B. Schoepflin shows how Christian Science healing became a viable alternative to medicine at the end of the nineteenth century. Christian Scientists did not simply evangelize for their religious beliefs; they engaged in a healing business that offered a therapeutic alternative to many patients for whom medicine had proven unsatisfactory. Tracing the evolution of Christian Science during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Christian Science on Trial illuminates the movement's struggle for existence against the efforts of organized American medicine to curtail its activities. Physicians exhibited an anxiety and tenacity to trivialize and control Christian Scientists which indicates a lack of confidence among the turn-of-the-century medical profession about who controlled American health care. The limited authority of the medical community becomes even clearer through Schoepflin's examination of the pitched battles fought by physicians and Christian Scientists in America's courtrooms and legislative halls over the legality of Christian Science healing. While the issues of medical licensing, the meaning of medical practice, and the supposed right of Americans to therapeutic choice dominated early debates, later confrontations saw the legal issues shift to matters of contagious disease, public safety, and children's rights. Throughout, Christian Scientists revealed their ambiguous status as medical practitioners and religious healers. The 1920s witnessed an unsteady truce between American medicine and Christian Science. The ambivalence of many Americans about the practice of religious healing persisted, however. In Christian Science on Trial we gain a helpful historical context for understanding late–twentieth-century public debates over children's rights, parental responsibility, and the authority of modern medicine.
