Book excerpt: This book investigates the composition of the book of Kings and its implications for the Deuteronomistic History (DH) of which it is a part. McKenzie analyses Kings on the basis of Noth's model of a single author/editor behind the original DH. He contends that the Deuteronomist (Dtr) wrote the series of oracles against the Northern royal houses without utilizing a prior, running prophetic document that some scholars have posited behind Samuel and Kings. He regards many other prophetic stories in Kings, including most of the Elijah and Elisha legends as later additions to the DH, in accord with Noth's recognition that the original DH was frequently supplemented by various writers. McKenzie illustrates Dtr's compositional techniques in a treatment of the accounts of Hezekiah and Josiah in Kings. He tentatively dates Dtr to Josiah's reign but believes that tensions among the many later additions to the work, including the report from Josiah's death on, suggest that they are not the result of systematic editing (e.g., Dtr2). The book offers the most up-to-date survey of research on the DH and the most recent detailed analysis of the lengthy variant version of Jeroboam's reign in LXXB at 1 Kings 12:24a-z. It offers a fresh perspective on the original shape of the DH based on recent scholarship and the author's own critical investigation.

She is intermittently aided in this effort by the women in her family, which, unsurprisingly, only obscures things further. Marcella's mother and aunt, a painter and a historian, who came of age amidst the cultural upheaval of the 1960s, see things one way, while her older sisters, each with her own set of problems, including problems with each other, have an entirely different perspective. Marcella's maternal grandmother, a daughter of Jewish immigrants now in her 80s, perhaps the least likely of them to empathize with a woman she'd once considered her rival, and a WASP no less, has perhaps the most nuanced view of Adele, which makes no sense. Except that it does. Marcella does not resolve her romantic predicaments by the close of the novel, and the mysteries of Adele's life remain, for the most part, impenetrable. But in sifting through her family's conflicting and fading memories, Marcella puts into words what no one else will say out loud, revealing not only what may or may not have happened, but what's truly at stake when a woman tells her story.

Langtoft wrote in Anglo-Norman with a specific purpose and a specific audience in mind. Robert Mannyng translated a large part of Langtoft's work into English for a very different kind of audience. Although he stayed close to his source-text in many places, his deviations offer insights into the way the English clergy and the public they addressed viewed themselves, their history and their future. The Matter of Kings' Lives is of interest to social and political historians, especially those interested in the reign of Edward I and Anglo-Scottish relations, and to literary historians who may find that these works have more to offer than has hitherto been realized.
