Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Built on the southwestern coast of Cyprus in the second century A.D., the House of Dionysos is full of clues to a distant life—in the corner of a portico, shards of pottery, a clutch of Roman coins found on a skeleton under a fallen wall—yet none is so evocative as the intricate mosaic floors that lead the eye from room to room, inscribing in their colored images the traditions, aspirations, and relations of another world. In this lavishly illustrated volume, Christine Kondoleon conducts us through the House of Dionysos, showing us what its interior decoration discloses about its inhabitants and their time. Seen from within the context of the house, the mosaics become eloquent witnesses to an elusive dialogue between inhabitants and guests, and to the intermingling of public and private. Kondoleon draws on the insights of art history and archaeology to show what the mosaics in the House of Dionysos can tell us about these complex relations. She explores the issues of period and regional styles, workshop traditions, the conditions of patronage, and the forces behind iconographic change. Her work marks a major advance, not just in the study of Roman mosaics, but in our knowledge of Roman society.

Book Dionysius The Epic Fragments Volume 56

Download or read book Dionysius The Epic Fragments Volume 56 written by and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epic poet Dionysius, who probably flourished in the first century CE, is a key transitional figure in the history of Greek poetry, sharing stylistic and thematic tendencies with both the learned Hellenistic tradition and the monumental epic poetry of the later Roman period. His Bassarica is the earliest known poem on the conquest of India by the god Dionysus and was an important model of Nonnus' Dionysiaca. His Gigantias related the battle of the giants against the Olympian gods and legends surrounding it, with particular focus on the figure of Heracles. This is the most comprehensive edition to date of his poetry, expanding the number of fragments available and providing a more reliable text based on a fresh inspection of the papyri. The volume includes a substantial introduction contextualising the poetry, a facing English translation of the text, and a detailed linguistic and literary commentary.

Book Museum Archetypes and Collecting in the Ancient World

Download or read book Museum Archetypes and Collecting in the Ancient World written by Maia Wellington Gahtan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museum Archetypes and Collecting in the Ancient World offers a broad, yet detailed analysis of the phenomenon of collecting in the ancient world through a museological lens. In the last two decades this has provided a basis for exciting interdisciplinary explorations by archaeologists, art historians, and historians of the history of collecting. This compendium of essays by different specialists is the first general overview of the reasons why ancient civilizations from Archaic Greece to the Late Classical/Early Christian period amassed objects and displayed them together in public, private and imaginary contexts. It addresses the ranges of significance these proto-museological conditions gave to the objects both in sacred and secular settings.

Book Michaelina Wautier 1614 1689

Download or read book Michaelina Wautier 1614 1689 written by Gerlinde Gruber and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Antwerp in the summer of 2018 the MAS, in collaboration with the Rubens House, will be organizing a first-ever monographic exhibition of the forgotten female artist Michaelina Wautier (1614-89). She was born in Mons but developed her career in Brussels, where she was working in around 1650. The artist maintained contacts with the court of the Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria who had four of her works in his collection. We know of some thirty paintings and one drawing by her hand. More than a third of these are signed in full and dated. Wautier painted masterful historical pieces, incisive portraits, endearing genre scenes and tranquil flower arrangements. There is no doubt that she displayed a ground-breaking versatility. Challenging themes, masterly techniques and a grand scale are all characteristic of her work. All her pieces were produced between 1643 and 1659. Her masterpiece is undoubtedly The Triumph of Bacchus held at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna. Michaelina Wautier appears in the painting as a seminude bacchante and is the only one of the figures present to look directly at the viewer.
