Novatian would eventually find himself at the center of a controversy which led to a schism of the Church, and so his works were relegated to obscurity for centuries. However, in its time, Novatian's On the Trinity was the epitome of Roman theology, and as some have argued, it was even ahead of its time. The present volume contains the complete works of Novatian translated into English, with an introduction and full bibliography of Novatian studies. This new translation takes into account the latest scholarship on Novatian, and brings the documents up to a new level of clarity and readability. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum Series Latina as Novatianus - Opera quae supersunt (CCSL 4), edited by G. F. Diercks. References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation.

The categories he uses to describe the Father include both traditions from Christian sources and articulations of negative theology, especially as seen in Middle Platonism. After establishing the limitations set by philosophical and theological language, Daniel Lloyd turns to the positive categories Novatian chooses for describing the Father, highlighting Novatian’s emphasis on revelation, evaluating the parameters of the uniqueness of the Father, and showing that his theology presents the Father as distinct in attributes such as incomprehensibility, eternality, and inability to change. Having presented Novatian’s theology of the Father as the center point of his thought, Lloyd next assesses Novatian’s theology of the Son, showing that his categories and terminology, even to the point of calling the Son “God,” do not function against his theology of the unique Father. Novatian has many resources for speaking about the Son’s divinity in a way that does not contradict his theology of the Father. Lloyd presents and analyzes these resources to demonstrate that the Son’s status as ontologically subordinate to the Father is the best reading of De Trinitate.

In addition to being a theological concept, unity has become a raison d'etre of various structures that the church has established and developed. All of these structures are supposed to serve the end of unity. However, from time to time some of them deviate from their initial purpose and contribute to disunity. This happens because the structures of the church are not a part of its nature and can therefore turn against it. They are like scaffolding, which facilitates the construction and maintenance of a building without actually being part of it. Likewise, ecclesial structures help the church function in accordance with its nature but should not be identified with the church proper. This book considers the evolution of some of these church structures and evaluates their correspondence to their initial rationale. It focuses on particular structures that have developed in the eastern part of the Christian oecumene, such as patriarchates, canonical territory, and autocephaly, all of which are explored in the more general frame of hierarchy and primacy. They were selected because they are most neuralgic in the life of the Orthodox churches today and bear in them the greatest potential to divide.
