Book The Trial of the Talmud

Download or read book The Trial of the Talmud written by Jean Connell Hoff and published by PIMS. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Trial of the Talmud that took place in Paris in 1240 has been the subject of a number of trenchant studies over the years. The present volume, with its felicitous, annotated translations of the Hebrew protocol along with a series of crucial papal letters and other church documents, places before an English-language readership for the first time a corpus of the essential primary texts that have framed the earlier scholarly discussions and analyses. The masterful overview by Robert Chazan effectively locates this disputation in its historical and literary contexts through a deft, critical synthesis of the previous studies; it also offers new insights which will undoubtedly serve to shape further discussion of this episode. This volume should be of great interest to scholars and students of Jewish history and thought, Jewish - Christian relations, and polemical literature of the middle ages. (back cover).

Book The Talmud in Dispute During the High Middle Ages

Download or read book The Talmud in Dispute During the High Middle Ages written by Fidora, Alexander and published by Servei de Publicacions de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. This book was released on 2019-12-17 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Christian discovery of the Babylonian Talmud is a significant landmark in the long and complex history of anti-Jewish polemic. While the Talmudic corpus developed in the same period as early Christianity, this post-biblical text was largely unknown to the Christians. Full awareness of the Talmud among Christian authors did not arise until the late 1230s, when the Jewish convert Nicholas Donin presented a Latin translation of Talmudic fragments to Pope Gregory IX. Though the Talmud was subsequently put on trial (1240) and burnt (1241/2) in Paris, the controversy surrounding it continued over the following years, as Pope Innocent IV called for a revision of its condemnation. The textual basis for this revision is the Extractiones de Talmud, that is, a Latin translation of 1.922 Talmudic fragments. The articles in this volume shed new light on this monumental translation and its historical context. They also offer critical editions of related texts, such as Donin’s anti-Talmudic polemic. Authors of the contributions are: Wout van Bekkum, Piero Capelli, Ulisse Cecini, Enric Cortès, Óscar de la Cruz Palma, Federico Dal Bo, Alexander Fidora, Görge K. Hasselhoff, Moisés Orfali, Ursula Ragacs and Eulàlia Vernet i Pons.

Book The Jews of Medieval Western Christendom

Download or read book The Jews of Medieval Western Christendom written by Robert Chazan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-11-23 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the years AD 1000 and 1500, western Christendom absorbed by conquest and attracted through immigration a growing number of Jews. This community was to make a valuable contribution to rapidly developing European civilisation but was also to suffer some terrible setbacks, culminating in a series of expulsions from the more advanced westerly areas of Europe. At the same time, vigorous new branches of world Jewry emerged and a rich new Jewish cultural legacy was created. In this important historical synthesis, Robert Chazan discusses the Jewish experience over a 500 year period across the entire continent of Europe. As well as being the story of medieval Jewry, the book simultaneously illuminates important aspects of majority life in Europe during this period. This book is essential reading for all students of medieval Jewish history and an important reference for any scholar of medieval Europe.

Book Political Trials in Theory and History

Download or read book Political Trials in Theory and History written by Jens Meierhenrich and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-02-27 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the trial of Socrates to the post-9/11 military commissions, trials have always been useful instruments of politics. Yet there is still much that we do not understand about them. Why do governments use trials to pursue political objectives, and when? What differentiates political trials from ordinary ones? Contrary to conventional wisdom, not all political trials are show trials or contrive to set up scapegoats. This volume offers a novel account of political trials that is empirically rigorous and theoretically sophisticated, linking state-of-the-art research on telling cases to a broad argument about political trials as a socio-legal phenomenon. All the contributors analyse the logic of the political in the courtroom. From archival research to participant observation, and from linguistic anthropology to game theory, the volume offers a genuinely interdisciplinary set of approaches that substantially advance existing knowledge about what political trials are, how they work, and why they matter.
