Download or read book Transmutation written by Alex DiFrancesco and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transgressive, transformative short stories that explore the margins of trans lives. Building on the success of All City, here is a wry, and at the same time dark and risk-taking, story collection from author (and baker) Alex DiFrancesco that pushes the boundaries of transgender awareness and filial bonds. Here is the hate between 16-year-old Junie, who is transitioning, and their mom's boyfriend Chad when the family moves into Chad's house on Lake Erie. And here is the love being tested between Sawyer and his dad, who named his boat after his child and resists changing it from Sara to Sawyer now. There is DiFrancesco's willingness to enter lands that are violent and comfortless in some of these stories, testing the limits of what it means to be human, sometimes returning stronger and wiser and sometimes not returning at all as their characters surge forward into unknown spaces. DiFrancesco's first novel All City (Seven Stories 2019) was praised by Publishers Weekly as a "loving, grieving warning [that] thoughtfully traces the resilience, fragility, and joy of precarious communities in an immediate, compassionate voice." All City was one of BookRiot's "Best Post-Apocalyptic Books of 2019," Entropy Mag's "Best of 2019," and Largehearted Boy's "Favorite Novels of 2019." It was a finalist for the 2019 Ohioana Book Award for Fiction.

Book excerpt: (Young adult paranormal fantasy with witches, demons, vampires, werewolves, dragons) The Crow I glanced at Henry where he preened his glossy feathers before tucking his wings neatly behind him, cocking his head to one side, shining black eye fixed on me. “Ethie,” he croaked. I reached up and stroked his head, glancing down again at the glass at my feet, taking note of the image. With a sickening twist in my stomach I realized I likely looked like a young Viviana Tepes, that very same nasty piece of work who got me in this mess in the first place, the ever-present crow on my shoulder. Awesome. Didn’t bode well for dear old Ethie Hayle, did it? While her growing power continues to terrify her, Ethie’s faith in Creator, in her family and in herself falters while, helpless to stop what’s coming, she chases after her former locketmate with the growing certainty that nothing will ever be the same and, win or lose, she just may not be able to accept who she’s becoming… KEYWORDS: paranormal series, paranormal books, paranormal fantasy, witches, witch, witch books, magical realism, witch fantasy, magical fantasy, vampire series, vampire books, shifter books, shifter series, werewolf series, werewolf books, vampire book, young adult paranormal series, young adult paranormal book, young adult shifter series, young adult werewolf books, young adult vampire books

Download or read book The Marriage of Heaven and Earth written by Randall A. Clack and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-08-30 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Middle Ages to the close of the 17th century, alchemy was fundamental to Western culture, as scores of experimenters sought to change lead into gold. Though its significance declined with the rise of chemistry, alchemy continued to captivate the imagination of writers and its images still appear in modern creative works. This book examines the literary representation of alchemical theory and the metaphor of alchemical regeneration in the works of Edward Taylor, Edgar Allan Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Margaret Fuller. While Taylor used alchemical metaphors to illustrate the redeeming grace of God upon the soul, these same metaphors were used by Poe, Hawthorne, and Fuller to depict a broader concept of redemption. These later writers used alchemical imagery to describe both the regeneration of the individual and the possible transformation of society. For Poe, alchemy became a metaphor for the transforming power of imagination; for Hawthorne, it became a means of representing the redeeming power of love; for Fuller, it figured the reconciliation of gender opposites. Thus these four American writers incorporated the idea of regeneration in their works, and the tropes and metaphors of the medieval alchemists provided a fascinating way of imagining the transformative process.
