This collection of sixteen stories (and one lonely poem) chart the many ways trouble can ensue. No actual human beings were harmed in the creation of this book. Stories from Eileen Gunn are always a cause for celebration. Where will she lead us? "Up the Fire Road" to a slightly alternate world. Four stories into steampunk’s heart. Into a very strange family gathering as they celebrate Christmas. Into the golem's heart. Never where we might expect.

Book excerpt: Wry, dark humor burnishes visionary SF in these often prophetic, sometimes troubling, but always fascinating tales that combine and masterfully conflate the disparate worlds of corporate tech and literary art. “After the Thaw” is a hi-tech take on an ancient idea: immortality. “Terrible Trudy on the Lam” based on actual events, is a modern fable about a zoo escape, a private eye, a vaudeville act and keeping your mouth shut. “Night Shift at NanoGobblers,” written for a NASA website, is about asteroid-altering AIs and their world-weary earthbound handlers. “Transitions” deals with jet lag when your flight is decades late. Gunn’s long-awaited third collection is rounded out by incisive and affectionate portraits of her SF colleagues, mentors, and friends, beginning with Ursula Le Guin. All illuminated of course by our artfully intimate interview.

Book How It Really Was

Download or read book How It Really Was written by Pat Gray and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-12-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up during the Depression in a small Indiana town, I had never seen a mountain or an ocean when I was twenty-one and had scarcely been outside the state. I had a passion for travel and set out alone for California after World War II. I discovered a new world of sunny beaches, housing shortages, and a job as a traveling saleslady for a music publisher. My territory was everything west of the Mississippi. In Montana, I met a young University band director and married him. Montana was great at first, but twelve years and three children later, I felt as trapped as I had in Indiana. Soon my husband got a job in California and life became exciting once more as we traveled the state, camping at beaches and parks on weekends and vacations. When the kids became teenagers, we decided to camp Europe, so we saved furiously in order to go. It was the trip of a lifetime and it infected the whole family with the "travel bug;" the kids became exchange students, citizens of the world. Once they went off to college and became adults, I found adventure on my own traveling the globe.
