Book The School Bus Doesn t Stop Here Anymore

Download or read book The School Bus Doesn t Stop Here Anymore written by Noreen Olson and published by D & M Publishers. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Noreen Olson's kitchen table, where everything happens. She loves birds, animals, family, children, friends, growing things and life on the farm, and writes about them and all the odd situations they manage to get into with engaging liveliness. Many of the pieces are humorous, but more than that, they are heartwarming and true. In them you will see reflections of your own loves, life, guilt, laughter, nostalgia, memories and beliefs. All of the animals, people and incidents are real (though Noreen admits that she is prone to the occasional slight exaggeration) and names have been changed for "her own protection". The titles of the short tales say it all: Saving the Preemie Calf, My Career As an Egg Grader, Lament for a Lousy Garden, Kitchen Archaeology, Embarrassing the Kids, The Lawn Ornament Vendetta and One More Way to Ruin a Party. Noreen Olson has been writing these true tales in her biweekly column for more than twenty-three years, and collected them in six books. These stories are the best of the best, together with newly written introductions to thematic groupings, and an introduction by Will Ferguson.

Book Miles and Miles

  • Pages : 347 pages

Download or read book Miles and Miles written by Miles Kington and published by Canelo. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An incomparable collection of wit and wisdom from a master of comic writing After creating the popular Franglais! series, Miles Kington always had an ambition: to write a book in English as well. An “endlessly curious and observant hack”, as he described himself, here a gentle wit and wide-ranging intelligence are brought to bear on everything from the curious geography of Jersey to anthropological studies on German prisoners of war; from an interview with the Mona Lisa to why there’s no such thing as a good jazz singer, via an interrogation of Nostradamus. Originally written for a wide range of publications, these pieces show Kington really letting his hair down, largely on the grounds that he never expected anyone to read them anyway. Together, they form an effervescent collection of light verse, memoir and listicles (yes, he was there first). In Miles and Miles we have a demonstration of a comic master at work, and a testament to the timeless class of one of Britain’s most-loved humorists.

Download or read book Pickers and Poets written by Craig E. Clifford and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2016-12-24 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books and essays have addressed the broad sweep of Texas music—its multicultural aspects, its wide array and blending of musical genres, its historical transformations, and its love/hate relationship with Nashville and other established music business centers. This book, however, focuses on an essential thread in this tapestry: the Texas singer-songwriters to whom the contributors refer as “ruthlessly poetic.” All songs require good lyrics, but for these songwriters, the poetic quality and substance of the lyrics are front and center. Obvious candidates for this category would include Townes Van Zandt, Michael Martin Murphey, Guy Clark, Steve Fromholz, Terry Allen, Kris Kristofferson, Vince Bell, and David Rodriguez. In a sense, what these songwriters were doing in small, intimate live-music venues like the Jester Lounge in Houston, the Chequered Flag in Austin, and the Rubaiyat in Dallas was similar to what Bob Dylan was doing in Greenwich Village. In the language of the times, these were “folksingers.” Unlike Dylan, however, these were folksingers writing songs about their own people and their own origins and singing in their own vernacular. This music, like most great poetry, is profoundly rooted. That rootedness, in fact, is reflected in the book’s emphasis on place and the powerful ways it shaped and continues to shape the poetry and music of Texas singer-songwriters. From the coffeehouses and folk clubs where many of the “founders” got their start to the Texas-flavored festivals and concerts that nurtured both their fame and the rise of a new generation, the indelible stamp of origins is inseparable from the work of these troubadour-poets.
