Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trails of Yesterday, first published in 1921, is ranked with the best firsthand accounts of ranching on the northern Great Plains in the 1870s and 1880s. This classic of cow-country literature is rich in authentic frontier history. Born in England in 1842, John Bratt came to America when he was twenty-two, and in 1866 he joined a wagon train traveling from Nebraska City to Fort Phil Kearny. Bratt gives a vivid view of the country along the Great Platte River Road, reporting on the condition of the trail, meetings with Indians such as Dull Knife, and encounters with buffalo herds. There are splendid descriptions of the few forts then protecting the long trail—Forts Kearny, McPherson, Mitchell, and Sedgwick—and of the road ranches of John Burke and the notorious Jack Morrow, among others. Bratt was a cattle rancher for more than two decades and was instrumental in the settlement of North Platte, Nebraska.

Book Tracing the Santa Fe Trail

Download or read book Tracing the Santa Fe Trail written by Ronald J. Dulle and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compared to such famous frontier paths as Lewis and Clark's route and the Oregon Trail, most people know little about the seminal trade route we call the Santa Fe Trail, yet this rough wagon road endured longer than any other American trail west of the Mississippi River. From 1821 to 1880, bold and daring men loaded their wagons with trade goods and set out from Missouri to Santa Fe, in the newly independent nation of Mexico. These merchants, teamsters, and travelers exchanged not only material goods, but also ideas and customs, forever altering the cultural and political landscape for American, Mexican, and Indian peoples along the route. Taking the reader on an imaginative tour from end to end, author Ronald Dulle often stops to explore how wagon trains are organized or what a campsite looks like; to notice the strange food, clothing, and habits of the day; or to imagine the feeling of a rainy day in the saddle. With dozens of stunning color photographs and a fascinating narrative, Dulle helps readers envision the frontier experience and appreciate the myriad material and cultural changes the Santa Fe Trail brought to our growing nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many disquieting thoughts oppressed Miss Sheila Langford as she halted her pony on the crest of a slight rise and swept the desolate and slumberous world with an anxious glance. Quite the most appalling of these thoughts developed from a realization of the fact that she had lost the trail. The whole categorical array of inconveniences incidental to traveling in a new, unsettled country paled into insignificance when she considered this horrifying and entirely unromantic fact. She was lost; she had strayed from the trail, she was alone and night was coming. She would not have cared so much about the darkness, for she had never been a coward, and had conditions been normal she would have asked nothing better than a rapid gallop over the dim plains. But as she drew her pony up on the crest of the rise a rumble of thunder reached her ears. Of course it would rain, now that she had lost the trail, she decided, yielding to a sudden, bitter anger. It usually did rain when one was abroad without prospect of shelter; it always rained when one was lost.
