Download or read book David written by Anthony Phillips and published by Society for Promoting Christian. This book was released on 2008 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of David - his surprising selection by the prophet Samuel, his tortured relations with Saul and his family, his passionate and reckless love for Bathsheba, and the appalling tragedies within his own family - has made this flawed but courageous king one of the most exciting characters in the Bible. Yet despite his turbulent life, he remained the 'man after God's own heart' and the inspiration for Israel's future Messiah. In David: A story of passion and tragedy, Anthony Phillips reflects on the life and work of the great warrior-king of Israel. He shows how David's story came to be written and what it really meant for the ancient Israelites and their religion. By taking a fresh and original look at some of the best-known narratives in the Hebrew Bible, Phillips enables us to revel in the passion and excitement of this unsurpassed literature of the ancient world, including its extraordinary psychological insight into the human condition - a perception as relevant now as when it was written. He also raises important issues about the Hebrews' understanding of the nature of their God.

Book King David Innocent Blood and Bloodguilt

Download or read book King David Innocent Blood and Bloodguilt written by David J. Shepherd and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-04-21 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the characters bequeathed to us by the Hebrew Bible, none is more compelling or complex than David. Divinely blessed, musically gifted, brave, and eloquent, David's famous slaying of Goliath also confirms that he is a redoubtable man of war. Yet, when his son Absalom rebels, David is dogged by the accusation than he will lose his kingdom because he is not merely a man of war, but a man of 'bloods' - guilty of shedding innocent blood. In this book, for the first time, this language of 'innocent blood' and 'bloodguilt' is traced throughout David's story in the books of Samuel and 1 Kings. The theme emerges initially in Saul's pursuit of David and resurfaces regularly as David rises and men like Nabal, Saul, Ishbosheth, and Abner fall. Innocent blood and bloodguilt also turn out to be central to David's reign. This is seen in a surprising way in David's killing of Uriah, but also in the subsequent deaths of his sons, Amnon and Absalom, his general, Amasa, and even in David's encounters with Shimei. The problem rears its head again when the innocent blood of the Gibeonites shed by Saul comes back to haunt David's kingdom. Finally, the problem reappears when Solomon succeeds David and orchestrates the executions of Joab and Shimei, and the exile of Abiathar. Attending carefully to the text and drawing extensively on previous biblical scholarship, David J. Shepherd suggests that innocent blood is not only a pre-eminent concern of David, and his story in Samuel and 1 Kings, but also shapes the entirety of David's history.

The ghost, Ophelia’s death and burial, the play within a play, and the breathtaking swordplay are just some of the elements that make Hamlet a masterpiece of the theater. King Lear Here is the famous and moving tragedy of a king who foolishly divides his kingdom between his two wicked daughters and estranges himself from the young daughter who loves him–a theatrical spectacle of outstanding proportions. Macbeth No dramatist has ever seen with more frightening clarity into the heart and mind of a murderer than has Shakespeare in this brilliant and bloody tragedy of evil. Taunted into asserting his “masculinity” by his ambitious wife, Macbeth chooses to embrace the Weird Sisters’ prophecy and kill his king–and thus, seals his own doom. Each Edition Includes: • Comprehensive explanatory notes • Vivid introductions and the most up-to-date scholarship • Clear, modernized spelling and punctuation, enabling contemporary readers to understand the Elizabethan English • Completely updated, detailed bibliographies and performance histories • An interpretive essay on film adaptations of the play, along with an extensive filmography

Book Christ the Tragedy of God

Download or read book Christ the Tragedy of God written by Kevin Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tragedy is a genre for exploring loss and suffering, and this book traces the vital areas where tragedy has shaped and been a resource for Christian theology. There is a history to the relationship of theology and tragedy; tragic literature has explored areas of theological interest, and is present in the Bible and ongoing theological concerns. Christian theology has a long history of using what is at hand, and the genre of tragedy is no different. What are the merits and challenges of placing the central narrative of the passion, death and resurrection of Christ in tragic terms? This study examines important and shared concerns of theology and tragedy: sacrifice and war, rationality and order, historical contingency, blindness, guilt, and self-awareness. Theologians such as Reinhold Niebuhr, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Martin Luther King Jr., Simone Weil, and Boethius have explored tragedy as a theological resource. The historical relationship of theology and tragedy reveals that neither is monolithic, and both remain diverse and unstable areas of human thought. This fascinating book will be of keen interest to theologians, as well as scholars in the fields of literary studies and tragic theory.

Book Tragedy and Biblical Narrative

Download or read book Tragedy and Biblical Narrative written by J. Cheryl Exum and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-05-16 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using insights about ancient and modern tragedy, this study offers challenging and provocative new readings of selected Biblical narratives: the story of Israel's first king, Saul, rejected for his disobedience to God and driven to madness; the story of Jephthah's sacrifice of his daughter in fulfillment of his vow to offer God a sacrifice in return for military victory; and the story of Israel's most famous king, David, whose tragedy lies in the burden of divine judgement that falls on his house as a consequence of his sins. The book discusses how these narratives handle such perennial tragic issues as guilt, suffering and evil.
