Resting for support on a stafl; I have come to the roofed dwellings, and the chambers of the aged,11 like the white swan, the bard of grievous dirges, a mere word, and dim-visaged phantom of nightly dreams,12 tremulous indeed, yet with good will. 0 fatherless children, of your sire, 0 old man, and thou too, hapless mother, who bemoanest thy husband in the dwellings of Hades. Weary not yourselves, letting go your foot and tired ankle, like a yoke-bearing steed up a rocky steppe,13 bearing the weight of his foot, driven in a waggon. Take hold of the hands and garments [of me, an old man] whose weak footstep is failing; and do thou aged escort me aged, thou with whom, while young, in the toils of equals, there were fellow-shields (and) young spears, II4 no disgrace to our most glorious country. See how the terrible-looking beams from the eyes [of these children] are like their sire's but yet misfortune has not failed from these children, nor is their beauty gone.15 0 Greece, of what, ah of what allies wilt thou be deprived, after having destroyed these! But [i cease], for I behold Lycus, the ruler of this land, passing near to this dwelling. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedies of Euripides, Vol. 2 of 3: In English Verse The plays contained in the present volume have been, on the whole, the least read of Euripides' writings. This is the more to be regretted, inasmuch as they comprise some of the most characteristic work of this poet, and as a knowledge of them is indispensable to a right appreciation of his genius and his influence. The Electra shows his peculiar methods in sharp contrast with those of Aeschylus and Sophocles: the Children of Herakles contains one of the noblest female characters in all literature: in the Daughters of Troy are some of the most brilliant choral odes in all the Greek Drama: the Madness of Herakles has been (unhappily for succeeding translators) already given to English readers by Browning in Aristophanes' Apology, as a representative play of Euripides. I have not, in my Introduction, aimed at giving anything approaching a complete survey of Euripides' literary method and of the ethical tendency of his works. This would have been impossible within so limited a space, and superfluous, in many respects, for thoughtful readers. I have restricted myself to certain aspects of his work which, as it seems to me, have been sometimes misunderstood or misrepresented. These happen also to be the very features in which his originality is most marked, and in which he diverges most widely from his great rivals. An exhaustive treatment of our author would require a large volume, such as has been already given to French students by Professor Paul Decharme. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedies of Euripides, Vol. 1 The pleasure which we receive from the admired writings of antiquity, in a manner allies our minds to the minds of the illustrious writers we contract a love for them, and interest, ourselves in every circumstance that interested them. This affection, which arises from the love of excellence natural to the well-disposed mind, induces us to enquire after even. The minutest particulars of their lives and fortunes and Homer, poor and blind, is not less the object of our attention than his hero Achilles. The life of a retired scholar cannot indeed be supposed to present us with great and striking events; but it may convey more useful instructions, such as come nearer to our own business and bosoms; it may encourage the man of genius to exert his talents so as to render himself agreeable and usefiil to his fellow-citizens, to procure their esteem while he lives, and to preserve his name from oblivion, so dreaded by the generous mind. Few of the great writers of ancient times have a juster claim to this attention than the virtuous, the modest, the amiable Poet, with whose remaining works the English reader is now presented. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plays of Euripides, Vol. 1: Translated Into English Prose From the Text of Paley The whole question of the present state of our classical texts, wrote Paley, in the preface to his third volume of Euripides, is one demanding a most careful and lengthened inquiry. If we cannot have them perfect, which is not to be hoped for, we must make up our minds to choose between adhering to the authority of the best existing mss., or freely admitting the conjectural restorations of eminent critics, or we must adopt a cautious mean between the two, which consists in correcting obvious errors, to the rejection of all purely yeoulatiw or only plausible alterations. It is this last method which Paley himself adopts; and, agreeing cordially as I do with his strictures on unwarrant able tampering with the text, I have endeavoured as far as possible, to follow his guidance through the tortuous mazes of textual corruption with this reservation, however, that, as my purpose is a twofold one, being as much to enable readers unfamiliar with the Greek to understand the drama tist's meaning as to produce a faithful version of the original, I have, in dealing with passages avowedly corrupt, preferred to adopt provisionally an intelligible emendation to leaving an awkward break in the sense. At the same time, from a textual critic's point of view, Paley's remark is unquestion ably true, passages really corrupt should be marked as avowedly corrupt, not patched up and almost rewritten. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tragedies of Euripides, Vol. 3 of 3: In English Verse While with respect to some of the plays in vol. ii, the translator might almost regard himself as challenging for them the attention of the English reader and the average student, he has, in this concluding volume, to take up the burden of attempting an adequate presentation of works whose fame so raises expectation as to add not a little to the formidable nature of his task. Hence I have, I trust, been not ungrateful for the strictures of some of my critics on preceding volumes, and have endeavoured to profit by them, the more willingly, as I cannot but recognise that their general tendency is in the direction of making the translation metrically more satisfactory, and so more readable. If in my blank verse these my counsellors (may I call them fellow-helpers?) still detect some of the old blemishes, I would ask that, before condemning me of obstinacy or of insensibility to rhythm, they will take note of the special difficulties involved in attempting to combine the four objects I have kept constantly before me, three of which seem to me to be essentials of every translation which claims to be more than a paraphrase. First, the English reader demands, not lexicon-language, but clear, straightforward, idiomatic English, free from all meaningless inversions which are simply evasions of metrical difficulties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plays of Euripides, Vol. 2: Translated Into English Prose From the Text of Paley And. O city of Thebes, glory of Asia, whence on a day I came to Priam's princely home with many a rich and costly thing in my dower, affianced unto Hector to be the mother of his children, I Andromache, envied name in days of yore, but now of all women [that have been or yet shall be] the most unfortunate; for I have lived to see my husband Hector slain by Achilles, and the babe Astyanax, whom I bore my lord, hurled from the towering battlements, when the Hellenes sacked our Trojan home; and I myself am come to Hellas as a slave, though I was esteemed a daughter of a race most free, given to Neoptolemus that island-prince, and set apart for him as his special prize from the spoils of Troy. And here I dwell upon the boundaries of Phthia and Pharsalia's town, where Thetis erst, the goddess of the sea, abode with Peleus apart from the world, avoiding the throng of men; wherefore the folk of Thessaly call it the sacred place of Thetis, in honour of the goddess's marriage. Here dwells the son of Achilles and suffers Peleus still to rule Pharsalia, not wishing to assume the sceptre while the old man lives. Within these halls have I born a boy to the son of Achilles my master. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It does seem strange that the singers who during the present century have enriched English poetry with wealth of metrical variety lavish beyond all precedent, should have lived in vain for the translator of the Greek drama, especially since those magnificent notes of chorus-music were struck by the author Of Atalanta in Calydon and Erechtheus, after which the good Old Pindaric - Ode pattern, with its guilelessly capricious alternations of longs and shorts, seems curiously out Of date. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the conviction that only translators who write poetry themselves can best re-create the celebrated and timeless tragedies of Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides, the Greek Tragedy in New Translations series offers new translations that go beyond the literal meaning of the Greek in order to evoke the poetry of the originals. The tragedies collected here were originally available as single volumes. This new collection retains the informative introductions and explanatory notes of the original editions, with Greek line numbers and a single combined glossary added for easy reference. The volume collects Euripides' Electra, an exciting story of vengence that counterposes suspense and horror with comic realism; Orestes, the tragedy of a young man who kills his mother to avenge her murder of his father; Iphigenia in Tauris, a delicately written and beautifully contrived Euripidean "romance"; and Iphigenia at Aulis, a compelling look at the devastating consequence of "man's inhumanity to man."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Euripides, Vol. 2 of 4: With an English Translation; Electra; Orestes; Iphigeneia in Taurica; Andromache; Cyclops In his seventy-third year he left Athens and his clamorous enemies, to be an honoured guest at the court of the king of Macedon. There, unharassed by the malicious vexations, the political unrest, and the now imminent perils of Athens, he wrote with a freedom, a rapidity, a depth and fervour of thought, and a splendour of diction, which even he had scarcely attained before. He died in 406 no, and, in a revulsion of repent ant admiration and love, all Athens, following Sophocles' example, put on mourning for him. Four plays, which were part of the fruits of his Macedonian leisure, were represented at Athens shortly after his death, and were crowned by acclamation with the first prize, in spite of the attempt of Aristophanes, in his comedy of The Frogs, a few months before, to belittle his genius.
