Download or read book In service Evaluation of the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System TCAS Industry Prototype written by Daniel H. Tillotson and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An operational evaluation of the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS II) Industry Prototype was conducted to assess the utility of TCAS II to flight crews, to assess the impacts of TCAS on flight crew workload, to assess the impacts of TCAS on the air traffic control (ATC) system, and to obtain flight crew comments on TCAS design parameters and cockpit displays. The evaluation was conducted on one Boeing 727 aircraft operating in airline revenue service with Piedmont Airlines. Quantitative data on TCAS performance were collected to characterize the location and frequency of TCAS advisories. Qualitative data were collected from flight crews and cockpit observers to assess the impacts of TCAS on ATC and the flight crews. Minor operational anomalies the utility of TCAS and to assess were identified and changes to operational procedures or TCAS logic were recommended. Keywords: Human factors engineering, Avionics, Flight training.
Download or read book Human Factors and Aerospace Safety written by Don Harris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. There have been significant advances in the engineering design and production standards of the hardware and electronics in commercial aircraft. It is now uncommon for the principal (or sole) cause of an aircraft accident to be a component failure. Human error is now implicated in up to 80 per cent of all civil and military aviation accidents. The human being is now arguably the least reliable component left in the system. This basic premise forms the basis for this international journal. The journal focuses specifically on the human element in the aerospace system and its role in either causing accidents or incidents, or in promoting safety. The journal solicits contributions from both academic researchers and practitioners from industry. Human factors and safety are applied sciences and this is reflected in the tone and composition of the papers in the journal.

Download or read book Human Factors in Aviation written by Earl L. Wiener and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 1988 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1950s, a number of specialized books dealing with human factors has been published, but very little in aviation. Human Factors in Aviation is the first comprehensive review of contemporary applications of human factors research to aviation. A "must" for aviation professionals, equipment and systems designers, pilots, and managers--with emphasis on definition and solution of specific problems. General areas of human cognition and perception, systems theory, and safety are approached through specific topics in aviation--behavioral analysis of pilot performance, cockpit automation, advancing display and control technology, and training methods.
Download or read book System Ergonomic Design of Cognitive Automation written by Reiner Onken and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-01-06 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why this book? Simply because it is due. Cognitive automation and its system-ergonomic introduction into work systems have been advanced in the meantime to such a degree that already applications for operational work systems are slowly becoming reality. This book shall contribute to give system designers some more guidelines about designing work systems and associated cognitive machines effectively, in particular those related to guidance and control of manned and unmanned vehicles. The issue is that the findings on cognition have to become sufficient commonsense for all from the various disciplines involved in system design, and that guidelines are given how to make use of it in an appropriate and systematic manner. These guidelines are to account for both the needs of the human operator in the work process and the use of computational potentials to make the work system a really most effective one. In other words, this book is meant to provide guidelines for the organisational and technical design of work systems. Therefore, this book is an interdisciplinary one. Findings in individual disciplines are not the main issue. It is rather the combination of these findings for the sake of the performance of work systems which makes this book a useful one for designers who are interested in this modern approach and its implementation.
