Book The Toronto Gospels Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Toronto Gospels Classic Reprint written by Edgar Johnson Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Toronto Gospels The codex consists of 226 leaves, in twenty-nine quires. These are made in the usual Greek manner, with eight leaves in each quire, except the 14th (of six) and 23d (of four), and are numbered in the lower left hand corner of the first recto. The leaves measure cm. 13 by The parchment is not very thin, and the book with its thick board covers makes a stout little volume 8 cmm. In thickness. There is appended to it a group of five quires, four of 7 and one of 6 leaves, or 34 in all, in scribed in a much later hand with the synaxarium and the menology. There are three coarse parchment fly leaves, one at the beginning and two at the end Of the whole, which thus contains 263 parchment leaves. The writing is in single columns, in the gospels of 18 lines. The lines are carefully ruled, the writing depending from the lines. The margins contain the section and canon numbers, and the chapter numbers and titles. There are frequent marginal initials in gold over red. A later hand has added lection numbers and titles and, at the upper right-hand corner of each recto, the name of the evangelist. The manuscript is not dated in the first hand, but a comparison with facsimiles of dated Greek cursives in the Bibliotheque Nationale published by Omont strongly favors a date toward the close of the eleventh century, or early in the twelfth. The hand of the Paris Psalter dated 1070 (bibl. Nat. MS grec 164) closely resembles that of the Toronto manuscript, which must have been written in the same general period. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels The object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theo logy is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theo logian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to translate the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of' everyday practical religion; and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title 'the Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Book The Newberry Gospels Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Newberry Gospels Classic Reprint written by Edgar Johnson Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Newberry Gospels The material dealing with the third gospel is introduced by a preface to that gospel, in twenty-five lines. The list of chapter titles for Luke, eighty-three in all, follows. Then appears the gospel of Luke, com plete, in 342 sections. Luke is followed by a short introduction of four lines to the gospel of John; the list of chapter titles for John, eighteen in all, is next given; and, after a second introduction of thirty-six lines, the fourth gospel appears, complete, in 232 sections. With this the manuscript seems to have closed, for the dated subscription, unfor tunately undecipherable, scrawled across the foot of this last page, is certainly not by the scribe of the manuscript, and is probably due to a very much later hand. A coarse fly-leaf, added perhaps still later, is covered with characters illegible even under the glass. The whole manuscript is now protected by a handsome red morocco binding, done by F. Bedford, London, not later than 1868. Of the source and history of the manuscript little can be said. It is briefly described in Quaritch's Catalogue of where it is num bered 9630. It was bought soon after by Mr. Henryprobasco, of Cincinnati, and in the catalogue of his collection3 substantially the same description of the little codex is presented. The book came into the possession of the Newberry Library, with much more of Mr. Pro basco's collection, on December 1, 1890, and is now in the museum of the library. In working there on the manuscript the writer has been put under many obligations to the librarians for their courtesy and helpfulness. Since its removal to Chicago, the manuscript has been collated by Mr. Edward A. Guy, his collation, which has not been pub lished, being designed, he informs me, to form a part of a larger work, on which he has long been engaged. A brief notice of the manu script, from the hand of Mr. C. E. Woodruff, of the University of Chicago, appears in the last edition (1896) of Dr. E. C. Mitchell's Critical Handbook of t/ze Greek New Testament (new York), p. 244. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. After the prophets, John proclaimed that God was already in the world, and that to know him men required only to be born again in the spirit. Jesus said within himself: If God he in theworld, i must know him. Where is God? And withdrawing into the wilderness, Jesus learned that there is a life of the flesh, of which he had no experience, and that, moreover, there is a manifestation of God of which he had experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few works of art better illustrate the splendor of eleventh-century painting than the manuscript often referred to as the “precious gospels” of Bishop Bernward of Hildesheim, with its peculiar combination of sophistication and naïveté, its dramatically gesturing figures, and the saturated colors of its densely ornamented surfaces. In The Bernward Gospels, Jennifer Kingsley offers the first interpretive study of the pictorial program of this famed manuscript and considers how the gospel book conditioned contemporary and future viewers to remember the bishop. The codex constructs a complex image of a minister caring for his diocese not only through a life of service but also by means of his exceptional artistic patronage; of a bishop exercising the sacerdotal authority of his office; and of a man fundamentally preoccupied with his own salvation and desire to unite with God through both his sight and touch. Kingsley insightfully demonstrates how this prominent member of the early medieval episcopate presented his role to the saints and to the communities called upon to remember him.

Book The Freer Gospels Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Freer Gospels Classic Reprint written by Edgar Johnson Goodspeed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freer Gospels The Freer Gospels first claimed the attention of modern scholars in the autumn of 1906, when a Gizeh dealer showed it with other ancient Biblical manuscripts to Dr. Grenfell and Dr. Hunt in Cairo. The manuscript with its three companions was purchased on December 19, 1906, by Mr. Charles L. Freer, and was sent to America. At a meeting of archaeologists held in Chicago on December 30, 1907, it was announced and briefly discussed, by Professor Henry A. Sanders. The text of the manuscript, which Professor Gregory has designated W, has since been carefully collated by Professor Sanders with an Oxford edition (1880) of the Received Text. The limited currency of that text and particularly of that edition in this country, and probably also in England, and the fact that we are dealing not with a mediaeval cursive, but with an ancient uncial, make it seem desirable to put forth a collation with the text of Westcott and Hort, as the one most generally in use among English-speaking students. The appearance through the munificence of Mr. Freer of an excellent facsimile edition of the Freer Gospels and the distribution of this edition among leading libraries make such a collation easy, but not superfluous, since relatively few of those who feel an interest in the text of the manuscript will have convenient access to the facsimile edition, and few who do will have leisure for a continuous collation. How the new manuscript relates to Westcott and Hort is moreover what many students wish to know. To make the testimony of the Freer Gospels accessible to the widest possible circle of textual students, therefore, I have undertaken to provide a collation of its text with that of Westcott and Hort. I have sought to make this collation substantially complete; but mere itacisms, except in some proper names, and in some words where they may have a certain significance, I have disregarded, as well as Imam/179 for 'iwaiw;s and the habitual addition of v-movable to e'an', third singulars in 'e, and words in m. This is so constant that I have sought to record in a special note only W's failures to insert it where it might have stood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel of St. Matthew, Vol. 1 1. "Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2. Saying, Where is He that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him. 3. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4. And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 5. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6. And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. 7. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 8. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young Child; and when ye have found Him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship Him also. 9. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was. 10. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down, and worshipped Him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto Him gifts; gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12. And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way." Matthew's Gospel is the gospel of the King.
