Book The Ghosts of Chippeny Hill

Download or read book The Ghosts of Chippeny Hill written by Judy Giguere and published by America Through Time is. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chippeny Hill, located in the northeast corner of Bristol (then New Cambridge), Harwinton and Plymouth has long been known as the home of Tories. Tories in Revolutionary War times were those that remained loyal to England, or were perhaps just fond of the Anglican Church. The Puritans were a stern bunch and those of the Church of England had songs to share, Christmas trees, feasts and presents. Rev. Newell of the First Congregational Church of New Cambridge said such things were of the devil. After the French and Indian War, England needed to replenish its sorely depleted treasury. England felt that since much of its expenditure was to protect the American colonies from French incursion, it only seemed right that the colonies should pay their share. The American colonies did not agree and the beginnings of the Revolutionary War struggles began. Those loyal to England gathered on Chippeny Hill. Their stories are today's legends, ghosts and myths--the very fabric of early Connecticut."--Publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 1776, two men from Connecticut each embarked on a dangerous mission. One of the men, a soldier disguised as a schoolmaster, made his way to British-controlled Manhattan and began furtively making notes and sketches to bring back to the beleaguered Continental Army general, George Washington. The other man traveled to New York to accept a captain's commission in a loyalist regiment before returning home to recruit others to join British forces. Neither man completed his mission. Both met their deaths at the end of a hangman's rope, one executed as a spy for the American cause and the other as a traitor to it. Neither Nathan Hale nor Moses Dunbar deliberately set out to be a revolutionary or a loyalist, yet both suffered the same fate. They died when there was every indication that Britain would win the American Revolution. Had that been the outcome, Dunbar, convicted of treason and since forgotten, might well be celebrated as a martyr. And Hale, caught spying on the British, would likely be remembered as a traitor, rather than a Revolutionary hero. In The Martyr and the Traitor, Virginia DeJohn Anderson offers an intertwined narrative of men from very similar backgrounds and reveals how their relationships within their families and communities became politicized as the imperial crisis with Britain erupted. She explores how these men forged their loyalties in perilous times and believed the causes for which they died to be honorable. Through their experiences, The Martyr and the Traitor illuminates the impact of the Revolution on ordinary lives and how the stories of patriots and loyalists were remembered and forgotten after independence.

Includes photos! Praise for A Guide to Haunted New England “Fun, charming . . . includes not only locales with reported ghosts, but also sites with macabre (though not haunted) histories.”—True Crime Librarian “Anyone interested in exploring the haunted, macabre and abandoned throughout New England knows they can count on D’Agostino to find out more about the site’s history, past sightings and how to find them.”—Mobile RVing

Download or read book Spooky Trails and Tall Tales Connecticut written by Stephen Gencarella and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Connecticut—a New England state with a proud history and vibrant culture. But there is more to this place than white church steeples and town greens. In the forests and meadows surrounding these quaint, colonial towns lurk spine-chilling ghosts protecting Captain Kidd’s treasure, the abode of the Devil himself, and shadowy creatures such as the Glawackus, all awaiting the next hiker to stumble down the trail. For years, the stories of these mysterious beings and places existed only in whispers and campfire tales, but now for the first time these legends have been collected and retold in one volume: Spooky Trails and Tall Tales Connecticut. Alongside each of these captivating tales is the necessary route and trailhead information brave readers will need to go beyond their town lines and test their nerve. Proud to support Friends of Connecticut State Parks with a portion of the royalties.
