Book excerpt: The theory of games deals with the strategy to be employed in playing a game which may be a model of a problem. The problem is one involving competition or rivalry and should the game end, have a payoff. The players which to receive the most or pay the least. The zero sum game is one in which the sum of all amounts paid and those received add to zero. The problem is to determine what is the best strategy. The main theorem of the theory of games proves the maximum a[subscript ij] = the minimum -a[subscript ji]. Many games are too complex to attack directly, they are simplified by reducing to a suitable rectangular game. They are then said to be normalized. The payoff is arranged in matrix form and the game is played by player number one (P1) choosing a row while player number two (P2) chooses a column. Should an element of a row be the minimum of the row and the maximum of the column it is a saddle point of the matrix. P1 will be assured of receiving at least the minimum element of the row and P2 will be sure of not paying more than the maximum element of the column chosen. The value of the element is the expectancy or the value of the game. Should the payoff matrix not have a saddle point the optimum strategy is then a mixed strategy. The sum of the relative frequencies of each move of P1 or P2 must be one. The selection of the moves of a play is a strategy. The number of possible moves in a play is the dimension of the space. If P1 has m moves the strategy of P1 is a vector in Euclidean space S[subscript m]. P2 has n moves the strategy of P2 is a vector in Euclidean space S[subscript n]. The strategy vector of P1 lies in a unit hypersphere with the center at the origin. The strategy of the game lies in the Euclidean product space S[subscript m] X S[subscript n] = S[subscript m] + [subscript n]. The points in S[subscript m] are disjoint from those in S[subscript n]. The space is therefore a Hausdorff Space.

This game, usually termed a "2×2 game” in the jargon, has been deemed most important because it makes it possible to posit an archetype framework that can be extended to various applications for engineering, the social sciences, and even pure science fields spanning theoretical biology, physics, economics, politics, and information science. The 2×2 game is in fact one of the hottest issues in the field of statistical physics. The book first shows how the fundamental theory of the 2×2 game, based on so-called replicator dynamics, highlights its potential relation with nonlinear dynamical systems. This analytical approach implies that there is a gap between theoretical and reality-based prognoses observed in social systems of humans as well as in those of animal species. The book explains that this perceived gap is the result of an underlying reciprocity mechanism called social viscosity. As a second major point, the book puts a sharp focus on network reciprocity, one of the five fundamental mechanisms for adding social viscosity to a system and one that has been a great concern for study by statistical physicists in the past decade. The book explains how network reciprocity works for emerging cooperation, and readers can clearly understand the existence of substantial mechanics when the term "network reciprocity" is used.
