  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 2020-09-10
  • ISBN : 1470462613
  • Pages : 313 pages

Download or read book Topology Through Inquiry written by Michael Starbird and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Topology Through Inquiry is a comprehensive introduction to point-set, algebraic, and geometric topology, designed to support inquiry-based learning (IBL) courses for upper-division undergraduate or beginning graduate students. The book presents an enormous amount of topology, allowing an instructor to choose which topics to treat. The point-set material contains many interesting topics well beyond the basic core, including continua and metrizability. Geometric and algebraic topology topics include the classification of 2-manifolds, the fundamental group, covering spaces, and homology (simplicial and singular). A unique feature of the introduction to homology is to convey a clear geometric motivation by starting with mod 2 coefficients. The authors are acknowledged masters of IBL-style teaching. This book gives students joy-filled, manageable challenges that incrementally develop their knowledge and skills. The exposition includes insightful framing of fruitful points of view as well as advice on effective thinking and learning. The text presumes only a modest level of mathematical maturity to begin, but students who work their way through this text will grow from mathematics students into mathematicians. Michael Starbird is a University of Texas Distinguished Teaching Professor of Mathematics. Among his works are two other co-authored books in the Mathematical Association of America's (MAA) Textbook series. Francis Su is the Benediktsson-Karwa Professor of Mathematics at Harvey Mudd College and a past president of the MAA. Both authors are award-winning teachers, including each having received the MAA's Haimo Award for distinguished teaching. Starbird and Su are, jointly and individually, on lifelong missions to make learning—of mathematics and beyond—joyful, effective, and available to everyone. This book invites topology students and teachers to join in the adventure.

Book Geometry Language And Strategy The Dynamics Of Decision Processes Volume 2

Download or read book Geometry Language And Strategy The Dynamics Of Decision Processes Volume 2 written by Gerald H Thomas and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 853 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first volume, Geometry, Language and Strategy, extended the concepts of Game Theory, replacing static equilibrium with a deterministic dynamic theory. The first volume opened up many applications that were only briefly touched on. To study the consequences of the deterministic approach in contrast to standard Bayesian approaches, the richness of applications, requires an engineering foundation and discipline, which this volume supplies. It provides a richer list of applications, such as the Prisoner's Dilemma, which extends the resonant behavior of Vol. 1 to more general time-dependent and transient behaviors.

Book Team Topologies

Download or read book Team Topologies written by Matthew Skelton and published by IT Revolution. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective software teams are essential for any organization to deliver value continuously and sustainably. But how do you build the best team organization for your specific goals, culture, and needs? Team Topologies is a practical, step-by-step, adaptive model for organizational design and team interaction based on four fundamental team types and three team interaction patterns. It is a model that treats teams as the fundamental means of delivery, where team structures and communication pathways are able to evolve with technological and organizational maturity. In Team Topologies, IT consultants Matthew Skelton and Manuel Pais share secrets of successful team patterns and interactions to help readers choose and evolve the right team patterns for their organization, making sure to keep the software healthy and optimize value streams. Team Topologies is a major step forward in organizational design for software, presenting a well-defined way for teams to interact and interrelate that helps make the resulting software architecture clearer and more sustainable, turning inter-team problems into valuable signals for the self-steering organization.

Book Social Choice and Strategic Decisions

Download or read book Social Choice and Strategic Decisions written by David Austen-Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social choices, about expenditures on government programs, or about public policy more broadly, or indeed from any conceivable set of alternatives, are determined by politics. This book is a collection of essays that tie together the fields spanned by Jeffrey S. Banks' research on this subject. It examines the strategic aspects of political decision-making, including the choices of voters in committees, the positioning of candidates in electoral campaigns, and the behavior of parties in legislatures. The chapters of this book contribute to the theory of voting with incomplete information, to the literature on Downsian and probabilistic voting models of elections, to the theory of social choice in distributive environments, and to the theory of optimal dynamic decision-making. The essays employ a spectrum of research methods, from game-theoretic analysis, to empirical investigation, to experimental testing.

Book The Dynamics of Strategy

Download or read book The Dynamics of Strategy written by Duncan A. Robertson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the life span of business models reduces, firms have had to review their strategic intent, develop strategic initiatives in fast and imaginative ways, and engage in major reorganization. This book examines the dynamics of strategy and helps to make sense of the processes of strategizing and organizing in a dynamic environment. The Dynamics of Strategy draws on theoretical perspectives that enable readers to describe and understand the dynamics of the firm's competitive landscape, the dynamics of the organizational landscape, and the interdependencies between these landscapes. The book combines research rooted in economics and organizational theory, and also builds on interdisciplinary studies using a wide range of research paradigms and methods. This broad range of theoretical perspectives allows a comprehensive analysis of the complex and multidimensional problems facing the contemporary fi rm. In order to help the reader connect sound theory with the reality of strategy, theoretical discussion is illustrated with case studies of fi rms from a wide range of industries. Written for managers and management students, The Dynamics of Strategy provides a roadmap to understanding the dynamics of organizing and strategizing.
