Book excerpt: This work explores the unique story of a thin, tall, and shabby man called Chronic Loafer. It is an exciting account of how his life gets affected by an unexpected event. The tale is set in the center of one of the most picturesque valleys In Pennsylvania. The author Nelson M. Lloyd (1873-1933) wrote for the New York Evening Sun for some time and authored many interesting short stories and novels. The Chronic Loafer presents one of his most celebrated stories. Excerpt from The Chronic Loafer "All eyes were turned toward the end of the bench, where sat the Chronic Loafer. He was a tall, thin, loose-jointed man. Thick, untrimmed locks of tawny hair fell from beneath his ragged, straw hat, framing a face whose most prominent features were a pair of deep-set, dull blue eyes, two sharp, protruding cheek-bones and a week's growth of red beard. His attire was simple in the extreme."

Book The Minorities of Cyprus

Download or read book The Minorities of Cyprus written by Nicholas Coureas and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-27 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the various minorities living in the island of Cyprus from the early modern (late Venetian and early Ottoman) period down to the present day. It charts their history, with special emphasis on their relations with the powers ruling Cyprus and with the two dominant Christian-Greek and Muslim-Turkish communities. The theme running through the book is that despite being significant members of Cyprus’ society, the three historical minorities (Maronites, Armenians and Latins) were only included in society to a certain extent by the two major communities. This was formalised in the post-independence (1960) period when they were compelled to become members of either dominant community and thus they suffered ‘internal exclusion’ by being regarded as religious sub-groups of one of the two dominant communities rather than national minorities in their own right. Within this general context, the social, legal and political roles, customs, culture and language of the various minorities are examined as they evolved through time and in response to internal and external developments affecting Cyprus in the political, economic and global spheres. They are discussed not as static entities, but as evolving groups that have adapted with greater or lesser degrees of success to the radical and at times painful changes Cyprus has undergone, especially over the last 150 years, in all walks of life. Finally, the question of what the future holds for the minorities of the island in the light of Cyprus’ EU membership and the prospect of reunification are also analysed. This book is a product of the conference “Minorities of Cyprus: Past, Present and Future”, which was held on 24 and 25 November 2007 at the European University Cyprus.

Book New York Firefighting and the American Revolution

Download or read book New York Firefighting and the American Revolution written by Bruce Twickler and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-25 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolutionary-era Manhattan was a chaotic scene of Loyalists, British occupation troops, Patriot spies and thousands of people seeking to live ordinary lives during extraordinary times. In the 1730s, the colonial legislature of New York officially created a fire department, establishing the origins of today's FDNY. As Washington withdrew from the city and the British rushed in, firefighters were forced to choose between joining the cause for independence or helping to protect British interests. Just days later, a fire broke out on September 21, 1776. By daybreak, it had consumed five hundred buildings and was the most destructive fire in colonial North America. While the British claimed it was set by American revolutionary vandals, controversy surrounding the fire remains today. Author Bruce Twickler uncovers the history of New York firefighting as a new nation was forged.
