Download or read book British Naval Aviation written by Dr Tim Benbow and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2013-07-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1909 the British Admiralty placed an order for a rigid airship, marking the beginning of the Royal Navy's involvement with airpower. This collection charts the Navy's involvement with aviation over the following century, and the ways in which its rapid expansion and evolution radically altered the nature of maritime power and naval strategy. Drawing on much new historical research, the collection takes a broadly chronological approach which allows a scholarly examination of key themes from across the history of British naval aviation. The subjects tackled include long-standing controversies over the control of naval air power, crucial turning points within British defence policy and strategy, the role of naval aviation in limited war, and discussion of campaigns - such the contribution of the Fleet Air Arm in the Mediterranean and Pacific theatres of the Second World War - that have hitherto received relatively little attention. The collection concludes with a discussion of recent debates surrounding the Royal Navy's acquisition of a new generation of carriers, setting the arguments within an historical context. Taken as a whole the volume offers fascinating insights into the development of a key aspect of naval power as well as shedding new light on one of the most important aspects of Britain's defence policy and military history. By simultaneous addressing historical and current political debates, it is sure to find a ready audience and stimulate further discussion.

Book Industrial History from the Air

Download or read book Industrial History from the Air written by Kenneth Hudson and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1984-11-22 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to explore the exceptional opportunities offered by aerial photography for unravelling the physical complexities and historical development of the industrial landscape of Britain. A wide range of industrial sites is illustrated - from quarries, mines and car factories to airports, railways and New Towns. The general nature and significance of their history and development is discussed while the detailed commentaries accompanying each photograph indicate the kind of historical and technical information which cannot be easily obtained in any other way. There is good geographic coverage of sites, with examples from England, Wales and Scotland, drawn from the eighteenth to the twentieth centuries. Through a combination of fascinating narrative detail and imaginative presentation of photographic evidence, this book provides a unique insight into our industrial past and present.

Book The Authorised History of British Defence Economic Intelligence

Download or read book The Authorised History of British Defence Economic Intelligence written by Peter Davies and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first history of UK economic intelligence and offers a new perspective on the evolution of Britain's national intelligence machinery and how it worked during the Cold War. British economic intelligence has a longer pedigree than the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) and was the vanguard of intelligence coordination in Whitehall, yet it remains a missing field in intelligence studies. This book is the first history of this core government capability and shows how central it was to the post-war evolution of Whitehall's national intelligence machinery. It places special emphasis on the Joint Intelligence Bureau and Defence Intelligence Staff - two vital organisations in the Ministry of Defence underpinning the whole Whitehall intelligence edifice, but almost totally ignored by historians. Intelligence in Whitehall was not conducted in a parallel universe. This contrasts with the conventional wisdom which accepts the uniqueness of intelligence as a government activity and is symbolised by the historical profile of the JIC. The study draws on the official archives to show that the mantra of the existence of a semi-autonomous UK intelligence community cannot be sustained against the historical evidence of government departments using the machinery of government to advance their traditional priorities. Rivalries within and between agencies and departments, and their determination to resist any central encroachment on their authority, emasculated a truly professional multi-skilled capability in Whitehall at the very moment when it was needed to address emerging global economic issues. This book will be of much interest to students of British government and politics, intelligence studies, defence studies, security studies and international relations in general.
