Book The Times I ve Known

Download or read book The Times I ve Known written by Leon Delmanehy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-05-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He was born right at the beginning of the “swinging” 1960s in London, England. His family strive to make ends meet, but for a variety of reasons, a few short years later, they move back to Catholic Ireland with his two Irish parents and one sister. There wasn’t much happening in Ireland those days. But tumultuous changes were in the offing as backwoods Ireland was to be transformed into a model of economic and social ideals. In many ways, the author’s story reflects these events as both he and his country are carried along by the tidal wave of progression. This tale follows him from Cosmopolitan London to the most rural of Ireland’s green pastures, into small towns, and then its capital, Dublin. In this, his first book, he attempts to tell his life’s story with not only his country but also the whole wide world as a backdrop to show more clearly the astonishing advancements and the terrible incongruity of mankind as it contrives to kill, maim, and starve each other alongside the destruction of our beautiful planet. And in this, he readily identifies the complex nature of his own character that mirrors in many ways the awful truth about the human condition. It is this duality of his nature that has brought him to this point in his life, to where he stands now today. All of what’s contained between these sheets is factual, but the author fervently wishes they weren’t. But as with the tidal ebb, life goes on and with it hope. And love.

Book You Should Have Known Free Preview The First 4 Chapters

Download or read book You Should Have Known Free Preview The First 4 Chapters written by Jean Hanff Korelitz and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace Reinhart Sachs is living the only life she ever wanted for herself. Devoted to her husband, a pediatric oncologist at a major cancer hospital, their young son Henry, and the patients she sees in her therapy practice, her days are full of familiar things: she lives in the very New York apartment in which she was raised, and sends Henry to the school she herself once attended. Dismayed by the ways in which women delude themselves, Grace is also the author of a book You Should Have Known, in which she cautions women to really hear what men are trying to tell them. But weeks before the book is published a chasm opens in her own life: a violent death, a missing husband, and, in the place of a man Grace thought she knew, only an ongoing chain of terrible revelations. Left behind in the wake of a spreading and very public disaster, and horrified by the ways in which she has failed to heed her own advice, Grace must dismantle one life and create another for her child and herself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Admissions. Admission. Aren't there two sides to the word? And two opposing sides...It's what we let in, but it's also what we let out." For years, 38-year-old Portia Nathan has avoided the past, hiding behind her busy (and sometimes punishing) career as a Princeton University admissions officer and her dependable domestic life. Her reluctance to confront the truth is suddenly overwhelmed by the resurfacing of a life-altering decision, and Portia is faced with an extraordinary test. Just as thousands of the nation's brightest students await her decision regarding their academic admission, so too must Portia decide whether to make her own ultimate admission. Admission is at once a fascinating look at the complex college admissions process and an emotional examination of what happens when the secrets of the past return and shake a woman's life to its core. *Includes Reading Group Guide*

Book The Know it all

Download or read book The Know it all written by A. J. Jacobs and published by Random House. This book was released on 2006 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On leaving school or university, you feel pretty pleased with yourself. You've learnt a lot, your'e well-read and you know a whole bunch of obscure facts guaranteed at some point to appear in the questions on Mastermind or University Challenge. Then you get a job, and ten years later youre more eloquent and eager to argue about Britney and Big Brother than Beckett and the Brontes. Sound familiar? Well it happened to AJ Jacobs too. As an editor at Esquire, Jacobs had built up a rather impressive knowledge of celebrity trivia - and the cure was going to take a long time. While others might take to reading a broadsheet at the weekend, Jacobs chose to read the Encyclopaedia Britannica. All 33,000 pages of it. Bill Bryson meets Schott's Original Miscellany meets Woody Allen. Part assemblage of fascinating trivia, part journey through adulthood, all laugh-out-loud funny.
