Book The Timber Resources of Vermont Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Timber Resources of Vermont Classic Reprint written by Neal P. Kingsley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Resources of Vermont A resurvey of the timber resources in Vermont was made in 1965 and 1966 by the Northeastern Forest Experiment Station, approximately 18 years after the initial forest survey. In this resurvey, as in the initial survey, the Northeastern Station received cooperation from the Vermont Department of Forests and Parks. The Department purchased the aerial photographs of the entire state that were used for the re survey and gathered information on the output of timber products. State field crews remeasured initial forest survey plots and established new plots on all State forest land. Personnel of the Green Mountain National Forest car ried out the part of the survey on National forest land. This report summarizes the timber-resource situation and the changes that have taken place since the initial sur vey. Trends in the supply of timber for forest-based indus tries are pointed out and projections of future timber supply are made. In this resurvey, a portion of the initial ground plots was remeasured to provide estimates of net annual timber growth and estimates of land-use change and to update the initial forest inventory volume. New ground plots were established for an independent second estimate. These two sets of estimates were weighted and combined to give the current estimates of forest area and timber volume. Sampling errors, which indicate reliability, are shown for most of the totals of the breakdowns of the new esti mates. Users of these resource data are cautioned to read carefully the definitions of terms and the section pertain ing to the reliability of the estimates in the appendix. Book The Forest of the Green Mountain State Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Forest of the Green Mountain State Classic Reprint written by Eric H. Wharton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Forest of the Green Mountain State Forests provide wood and other forest products, watershed protection, wildlife habitat, biodiversity, a setting for recreation, and much more. They have played a major role in the history and culture of Vermont. The early settlers found nearly all of the State covered by forests. The initial clearing of these woodlands was slow as most colonists established small subsistence farms. Forest clearing became widespread around 1800 as Vermont's farmers began supplying food and wool to a rapidly growing nation. The thousands of small farms created a strong agriculture - based economy. The city of Burlington, Vermont, became a major producer of timber during this time. By 1880, only about a third of Vermont remained forested. As early as 1845, George Perkins Marsh warned Vermont farmers about the damage that results from clearing forests. Eventually, those who once assumed that the State's forest resource was unlimited were faced with timber shortages. Soil erosion from farm land increased and silt now muddied creeks that once ran clear. And because of the rapid runoff of storm water, springs that previously flowed year round were dry during the summer. As Vermont's forests diminished, so did once abundant populations of important species of wildlife, for example, the beaver, black bear, white - tailed deer, wild turkey, and wolf. Book Vermont the Land of Green Mountains Classic Reprint

Download or read book Vermont the Land of Green Mountains Classic Reprint written by Vermont; Office of Secretary of State and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vermont, the Land of Green Mountains Long, long ago, so long ago that nobody knows just when or where it was given, the name Green mountains was bestowed upon the mountain range that extends through the State of Vermont from its southern to its northern border. The most that is known concerning the origin of this name is that it was given by the French, the first Europeans to visit this region. If Samuel Champlain, the discoverer of these mountains, gave them a name, he did not record that fact in his journals, which were kept with much care. It is more probable that some French soldier sailing southward over Lake Champlain on a warlike expedition into the Mohawk country, or some pious Jesuit priest traveling by canoe toward the Indian encampments, in the hope of converting the aborigines to the Christian faith, gazed with admiration on the nearer hills and the more distant peaks, and gave to them the natural and appropriate name, the Green mountains. We use the English phrase for the mountains, but the French term is preserved in the name of the State, Vermont - Verd Mont - thanks to Dr. Thomas Young of Philadelphia, at whose suggestion the name was given. And they are the green mountains in very truth, with the verdure of meadow and pasture land on their lower slopes, and the verdure of deciduous trees and evergreen forests on their higher slopes and summits. This mountain barrier, taking toll of the moisture-laden clouds that )ass over its summits from the ocean, keeps this highland region well watered and its verdure fresh and beautiful. The Green mountains - how much this name suggests to the weary toiler in the noisy, grimy city! The very name comes to the hot and stifling atmosphere of a great metropolis with an alluring sound. It suggests the green that means the abundant bounty and varied charm of nature; the green of upland meadows, the green of the forests, stretching far away over the slopes of the everlasting hills; the green that denotes life and promotes life and health. It suggests beautiful drives through shaded ways, beside which mountain streams go laughing and singing down to the valleys, over moss-covered rocks and shining pebbles, here becoming a cascade wreathed with mist, there an angry torrent, then spreading out into a wide and placid basin between green meadows. Book Sixth Annual Report of the State Forester

Download or read book Sixth Annual Report of the State Forester written by Austin F. Hawes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixth Annual Report of the State Forester: Progress of Forestry in Vermont While the practice of forestry is still far behind the general interest in the subject, the increased demands upon the Forestry Department for inspection of woodlands, for general advice, and for nursery stock, and the growing interest in State ownership of large tracts, all characterize an encouraging condition. In a few sections of the State, however, destructive lumbering is progressing on a scale hitherto unknown, and unless prompt steps are taken, considerable areas of Ver mont will be turned from productive forests to worthless barrens. The reactionary policy of these large concerns, which pay no heed to the future, force one of two alterna tives upon the people. Either the State must assert its right to regulate the cutting of these mountain forests, or it must embark more extensively upon the policy of State ownership. Neither can be adopted without increased appropriations, and at present the policy of purchase seems the better, although possibly the slower method. About 10 billion board feet of Coast Douglas fir is harvested annually. This is about 55 percent of the total softwood lumber production in the United States. There is an urgent need for better methods of appraising the quality of this important timber resource. Estimates of the recovery that can be obtained from Coast Douglas-fir sawtimber are needed by forest land managers, timber buyers, and timber processors for efficient utilization of the resource for lumber, veneer, pulp, or other products.
