Book The Timber Industries of West Virginia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Timber Industries of West Virginia Classic Reprint written by James T. Bones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Timber Industries of West Virginia Hansen and Warder (1967) observed that a pattern toward greater stability had developed within the industry. This was exemplified by a steady decline in small-scale operations, an ih crease in average size, a leveling-off in total out put, and an increasing number of mills that operated all year. The study also found that the percentage of sawmills near improved roads had grown from 68 percent in 1958 to 81 percent in 1967, and that maximum distances for hauling sawlogs (from the woods to the mill) had in creased from a range of 10 to 36 miles to a range of 18 to 110 miles. In the eastern United States, improved transportation routes tend to increase the size of raw-material procurement areas, in crease product marketing capabilities, and en courage the development of high-capacity production facilities. While sawlog production from West Virginia timberlands decreased by 5 percent - 464 million board feet - from 1965 to 1974, log receipts at sawmills decreased by 8 percent (table Only the Northwestern Region reflected increases in both sawlog production and receipts, up 26 percent and 17 percent, respectively, during the past 10 years. The Southern Region experienced the greatest losses in both production and receipts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book West Virginia Geological Survey Vol 5

Download or read book West Virginia Geological Survey Vol 5 written by A. B. Brooks and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from West Virginia Geological Survey, Vol. 5: Forestry and Wood Industries In calling attention to the condition of West Virginia forests and to the necessity for a more economical use of them, we bring before the farmers, the manufacturers, the lumbermen, before business men, professional men, capitalists, laborers, and men of every trade and calling, a question in which they are all alike interested. In no state are the forests greater timber producers, and in no state do they occupy a more important position than in West Virginia. The non-agricultural lands lie on our mountains at the heads of the streams. The removal of forests from these lands would affect not only the citizens of this state but all who are influenced in any way by the flow of the Ohio river. The approximate figures given below will serve to show the situation briefly. There once existed within the present limits of West Vir ginia an almost unbroken forest covering more than 15% million acres and containing 150 billion feet of timber. During the time which has elapsed, from the clearing of the first acre by civilized men to the present, the virgin forest area-has been reduced to one-tenth its original size or to 1% million acres. In addition to this area there are extensive cut-over forests aggregating about 3 million acres; and 5 million acres of far mers' woodlots. The present forests, then, cover 60 per cent of the state and contain not less than 25 billion feet of standing timber. There are 83 mammoth band saw mills and about 900 portable saw mills operating within the state. These have a combined annual capacity of approximately 1% billion feet. Should all of them continue to operate as at present they would cut the timber of the state in a little over 16 years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chestnut Oak in the Southern Appalachians In the' valley counties of Virginia, in Maryland, and in northeast ern West Virginia the chestnut oak is principally small second growth. The bodies of old timber are small, have been heavily culled, or are at a great distance from means of transportation. On account of the strong demand for both bark and small-sized timber in this region Second growth is usually cut as soon as it is large enough to be merchantable. Both lumbering and bark peeling have been im portant industries in this section for many years and the diameter limit of cutting is smaller than elsewhere. Book Report on the Wood Using Industries of Florida Classic Reprint

Download or read book Report on the Wood Using Industries of Florida Classic Reprint written by Hu Maxwell and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report on the Wood Using Industries of Florida Agriculture has not yet greatly lessened the timber areas of Florida. About one acre in eight has been cleared. In many parts, in the southern half of the State particularly, the forest cover is so thin that the woods afford about a good pasturage as if the trees were not there. In the northern part, where the hardwoods of the Appalachian region overlap on Florida and soil is better, the forests' are generally much heavier. Many of the Florida rivers are ideal as driving streams for logs. The currents are sluggish, and the water usually deep. There are a few bars and no rapids. On small streams the chief obstacle in the way of log driving is frequently trees which grow along the banks and down to the extreme low water mark. These trunks sometimes so nearly close the channels that little space is left for logs to pass through. That difficulty is not often met on the larger rivers. Book Sound Wormy

Download or read book Sound Wormy written by Andrew Gennett and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in what remains some of the wildest country in the United States, Sound Wormy recalls a time when regulations were few and resources were abundant for the southern lumber industry. In 1901 Andrew Gennett put all of his money into a tract of timber along the Chattooga River watershed, which traverses parts of Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. By the time he wrote his memoir almost forty years later, Gennett had outwitted and outworked countless competitors in the southern mountains to make his mark as one of the region's most seasoned, innovative, and successful lumbermen. His recollections of a rough-and-ready outdoors life are filled with details of logging, from the first "cruise" of a timber stand to the moment when the last board lies "on sticks" in the mill yard. He tells how massive poplars, oaks, and other hardwoods had to be felled and trimmed by hand, dragged down mountain slopes by draft animals, floated downstream or carried by rail to the mill, and then sawn, graded, and stacked for drying. He tells of buying timber rights in a land market filled with "sharp" operators, where titles and surveys were often contested and kinship and custom were on an equal footing with the law. Gennett saw more than potential "boardfeet" when he looked at a tree. He recalls, for instance, his efforts to convince the U.S. Forest Service to purchase undisturbed areas of wilderness at a time when its mandate was to condemn and buy up farmed-out and clear-cut land. One such sale initiated by Gennett would become the Joyce Kilmer Wilderness in North Carolina. Filled with logging lore and portraits of the southern mountains and their people, Sound Wormy adds an absorbing new chapter to the region's natural and environmental history.

  • Pages : 332 pages

Download or read book Black Milwaukee written by Joe William Trotter and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Other historians have tended to treat black urban life mainly in relation to the ghetto experience, but in Black Milwaukee, Joe William Trotter Jr. offers a new perspective that complements yet also goes well beyond that approach. The blacks in Black Milwaukee were not only ghetto dwellers; they were also industrial workers. The process by which they achieved this status is the subject of Trotter's ground-breaking study. This second edition features a new preface and acknowledgments, an essay on African American urban history since 1985, a prologue on the antebellum and Civil War roots of Milwaukee's black community, and an epilogue on the post-World War II years and the impact of deindustrialization, all by the author. Brief essays by four of Trotter's colleagues--William P. Jones, Earl Lewis, Alison Isenberg, and Kimberly L. Phillips--assess the impact of the original Black Milwaukee on the study of African American urban history over the past twenty years.
