Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mere months before the attack on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent a volunteer group of American airmen to the Far East, convinced that supporting Chinese resistance against the continuing Japanese invasion would be crucial to an eventual Allied victory in World War II. Within two weeks of that fateful Sunday in December 1941, the American Volunteer Group—soon to become known as the legendary "Flying Tigers"—went into action. For three and a half years, the volunteers and the Army Air Force airmen who followed them fought in dangerous aerial duels over East Asia. Audaciously led by master tactician Claire Lee Chennault, daring pilots such as David Lee "Tex" Hill and George B. "Mac" McMillan led their men in desperate combat against enemy air forces and armies despite being outnumbered and outgunned. Aviators who fell in combat and survived the crash or bailout faced the terrifying reality of being lost and injured in unfamiliar territory. Historian Daniel Jackson, himself a combat-tested pilot, recounts the stories of downed aviators who attempted to evade capture by the Japanese in their bid to return to Allied territory. He reveals the heroism of these airmen was equaled, and often exceeded, by the Chinese soldiers and civilians who risked their lives to return them safely to American bases. Based on thorough archival research and filled with compelling personal narratives from memoirs, wartime diaries, and dozens of interviews with veterans, this vital work offers an important new perspective on the Flying Tigers and the history of World War II in China.

Book excerpt: Katrell Christie was a thirty-something former hippie-turned-roller-derby-rebel with an eclectic little tea shop, Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party, in suburban Atlanta.Katrell had no idea on earth that justtwo years after opening her doors, herordinary American life would make a drastic change and so would the lives of women half a world away. I chose the name of my tea shop--Dr. Bombay's Underwater Tea Party --because it sounded whimsical.India wasn't a part of the equation. Not even remotely. I didn't do yoga. I had no deep yearning to see the Taj Mahal or tour Hindu temples. I was not harboring some spiritual desire to follow the path of the Buddha. Indian food? I could take it or leave it. But a regular customer, Cate Powell, raved about a trip she'd taken there as a Rotary Club scholar. Cate was planning to go again to work with a women's handicraft exchange. Her enthusiasm was infectious.'You should come, ' she said after breezing into the shop one day. I didn't give it much thought. It seemed about as likely of happening as me suddenly deciding to mount abid forMiss Georgia Peach.I was a new business owner with work stretching for as far as I could see . . . But Katrell did go. She toured the tea fields of Darjeeling, witnessed the Hindu throngs at the Ganges, and learned to string pearls in the Muslim town of Hyderabad where Cate was working to help market the jewelry. As we work I watch. Some shed their Muslim coverings when they enter the workroom but others remain fully covered, only a glimpse of eyes visible. It's disconcerting. I'm a Southern girl. My mother taught me to throw out a big friendly smile to the world. But with these womentheir faces cloakedI get nothing back. I can't connect. Even worse, I couldn't get my mind off the idea that no matter what these women did they would nev

Download or read book Obscene Things written by Naifei Ding and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-18 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Obscene Things Naifei Ding intervenes in conventional readings of Jin Ping Mei, an early scandalous Chinese novel of sexuality and sexual culture. After first appearing around 1590, Jin Ping Mei was circulated among some of China’s best known writers of the time and subsequently was published in three major recensions. A 1695 version by Zhang Zhupo became the most widely read and it is this text in particular on which Ding focuses. Challenging the preconceptions of earlier scholarship, she highlights the fundamental misogyny inherent in Jin Ping Mei and demonstrates how traditional biases—particularly masculine biases—continue to inform the concerns of modern criticism and sexual politics. The story of a seductive bondmaid-concubine, sexual opportunism, domestic intrigue, adultery and death, Jin Ping Mei has often been critiqued based on the coherence of the text itself. Concentrating instead on the processes of reading and on the social meaning of this novel, Ding looks at the various ways the tale has been received since its first dissemination, particularly by critiquing the interpretations offered by seventeenth-century Ming literati and by twentieth-century scholars. Confronting the gender politics of this “pornographic” text, she troubles the boundaries between premodern and modern readings by engaging residual and emergent Chinese gender and hierarchic ideologies.
Download or read book Fate s Finger written by Robert W. Christie M.D. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2002-04-12 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fate’s Finger is a fictionalized memoir based on the author’s experience as a combat-inexperienced 2nd lieutenant sent to the ETO late in 1944 as a replacement platoon leader in an armored division. He arrived at the beginning of the Battle of the Bulge and fought with his division through three campaigns in Europe. Each chapter is introduced by a newspaper headline appropriate to the times, followed by a letter to or from a character in the book to folks back in the U.S. The events described in each chapter are based on reality, but dialogue, as well as personal names and character development are fictional. Graphics include photographs, news clippings, and maps. Authenticity, verisimilitude, and readibility were the author’s aims, and so the book is meant to be read as a military historical novel written by an old soldier attempting to preserve a micro-history of tank warfare in WW II. “….a ‘bottom-up’ account of tank warfare, unique in the annals of WW II, based on the cold, hard, terrifying facts of armored combat. The way the author develops the humanism of the characters, their language, their down-to-earth thoughts and emotions is truly remarkable.” Col. Arthur F. Pottle, WW II troop commander, 86th Cav Rcn Sqdn, 6th Armored Division, Third Army “Fate’s Finger is a great military micro-historical achievement, telling it like it was for the men on the line in WW II armored divisions, and it reeks with verisimilitude: the contemporaneous U.S. newspaper headlines, and the wonderful human insights in the letters to and from the folks back home. Absolutely authentic, a ‘been there, done that’. I couldn’t put it down!” Capt. Perry Swirsky, WW II tank company commander, 752nd Tank Bn. “Only a rare few WW II accounts have captured as this one has the turmoil that small groups of tankers and their machines endured to make the ‘big picture’ succeed. A must read for old – and new – tankers.” 1st Lt. George A. Campbell, WW II tank platoon leader, 8th Armored Division.

Download or read book Maithil Women s Tales written by Coralynn V. Davis and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constrained by traditions restricting their movements and speech, the Maithil women of Nepal and India have long explored individual and collective life experiences by sharing stories with one another. Sometimes fantastical, sometimes including a kind of magical realism, these tales allow women to build community through a deeply personal and always evolving storytelling form. In Maithil Women’s Tales, Coralynn V. Davis examines how these storytellers weave together their own life experiences--the hardships and the pleasures--with age-old themes. In so doing, Davis demonstrates, they harness folk traditions to grapple personally as well as collectively with social values, behavioral mores, relationships, and cosmological questions. Each chapter includes stories and excerpts that reveal Maithil women’s gift for rich language, layered plots, and stunning allegory. In addition, Davis provides ethnographic and personal information that reveal the complexity of women’s own lives, and includes works painted by Maithil storytellers to illustrate their tales. The result is a fascinating study of being and becoming that will resonate for readers in women’s and Hindu studies, folklore, and anthropology.

Download or read book Emerson as Philosopher written by Richard Gilmore and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the role of postmodernism (skepticism towards metanarratives and anti-essentialism) in Ralph Waldo Emerson's philosophy by putting it in conversation with key 20th and 21st century thinkers such as Beauvoir, Coates, Derrida, Paz, Rorty, and Zizek. Postmodern Emerson shows how Emersonian skepticism to metanarratives such as sexism, racism, Beauvoiran "serious values," and others, can help us face some of society's gravest contemporary social and philosophical challenges. Methodologically, the book exemplifies Emersonian postmodernism by defying traditional philosophical metanarratives about the difference between high and low culture or serious and ridiculous subjects, and Emerson with what would seem to be his opposite. This is itself a postmodern gesture, breaking rules of genre and topic to make unlikely but interesting connections. Above all, this book proves that in this time of social division and widespread despair, Emerson can help.
