Book Suicide in the Entertainment Industry

Download or read book Suicide in the Entertainment Industry written by David K. Frasier and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-09-11 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work covers 840 intentional suicide cases initially reported in Daily Variety (the entertainment industry's trade journal), but also drawing attention from mainstream news media. These cases are taken from the ranks of vaudeville, film, theatre, dance, music, literature (writers with direct connections to film), and other allied fields in the entertainment industry from 1905 through 2000. Accidentally self-inflicted deaths are omitted, except for a few controversial cases. It includes the suicides of well-known personalities such as actress Peg Entwistle, who is the only person to ever commit suicide by jumping from the top of the Hollywood Sign, Marilyn Monroe and Dorothy Dandridge, who are believed to have overdosed on drugs, and Richard Farnsworth and Brian Keith, who shot themselves to end the misery of terminal cancer. Also mentioned, but in less detail, are the suicides of unknown and lesser-known members of the entertainment industry. Arranged alphabetically, each entry covers the person's personal and professional background, method of suicide, and, in some instances, includes actual statements taken from the suicide note.

Book excerpt: A girl in foster care tries to find her birth mother before she loses her forever in this “tender tale” (School Library Journal, starred review) about last chances and new opportunities. For a kid bouncing from foster home to foster home, The Book of Changes is the perfect companion. That’s why Marin carries three pennies and a pocket-sized I Ching with her everywhere she goes. Yet when everything in her life suddenly starts changing—like landing in a foster home that feels like somewhere she could stay, maybe forever—the pennies don’t have any answers for her. Marin is positive that all the wrongs in her life will be made right if only she can find her birth mother and convince her that they belong together. Marin is close, oh so close—until she gets some unwelcome news and her resolve, like the uneasy earth far beneath the city of San Francisco, is shaken.

Book May s Story

Download or read book May s Story written by Coral Petkovich and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biography May's Story follows the long life of the protagonist, May, who was born in Hawthorn, Victoria, in 1908 and died in Perth, Western Australia, in 2009. Her mother took her not long after her birth back to Wiluna in outback Western Australia, where her father had a gold mine. From there, they went while she was a small child to the Swan Hotel in Fremantle, which belonged to them until 1921. Her father died of the Spanish Influenza in 1919. Subsequently May lived in Swanbourne, then in Victoria before returning to Perth, where she married and gave birth to two children. The biography includes historical events and descriptions of a way of life now lost to memory and soon to be forgotten unless we have written accounts. It is based on the life of a typical Anglo-Saxon woman of her time, with all her prejudices and faults, generosity and strengths.
