Book The Sociology of Higher Education

Download or read book The Sociology of Higher Education written by Miriam David and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sociology of Higher Education: Reproduction, Transformation and Change in a Global Era provides an exciting and conceptually rich approach to the sociology of higher education. It offers innovative perspectives on the future of universities within the new and emerging research sub-field of the sociology of global higher education. The twenty-first century has witnessed wide-ranging structural and ideological transformations in higher education which have created both a sense of opportunity, as well as crisis and loss in the urgent debates around the legitimate roles of the university in the 21st century. The chapters represent a diverse and vibrant field, illustrating a sociological imagination and a dynamic engagement with the key challenges facing higher education, and confirming continuing inequalities through internationalisation. This book is comprised of a broad selection of articles originally published in the British Journal of Sociology of Education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Commonwealth scholarships began in 1959. They have since moved over 30,000 people across borders, launching them into influence as politicians, poets, painters, professors – and the rest. Their stories illuminate the sociology and politics of higher education, of the Commonwealth, and of its member countries: they include the last scholar before apartheid took South Africa out of the Commonwealth, who became a high court judge, and the first after it came back, now a vice-chancellor. The second edition of this book, revised and updated since it was first published to mark the scholarships’ jubilee, sets out the narrative of the scholarship plan from its unlikely conception in a Commonwealth trade conference to its survival in the changed world of 2015. This book looks at the people who selected scholars, from the Lord Chamberlain as a break from censoring plays in the 1960s to the daughter of a pig farmer in the 2000s, and at the lives of the scholars and former scholars themselves. By asking who was selected, how, and why, it examines the policies of countries offering scholarships and those receiving them, looks at their role within the universities of Africa, Asia and the Caribbean, discusses their experience as they studied abroad, and assesses their long-term impact. Three themes stand out. First, scholarship policy has been shaped by the interplay of national politics and education. Second, the world’s four million cross-border university students are themselves now big business and the stuff of international politics; the Commonwealth record offers a microcosm of their experience. Third, the lives and achievements of former scholars answer the policy question: was investing in scholarships a good way of spending public money?

Download or read book Rabbinic Authority written by Michael S. Berger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Michael S. Berger analyzes the notion of Rabbinic authority from a philosophical standpoint. He sets out a typology of theories that can be used to understand the authority of these Sages, showing the coherence of each, its strengths and weaknesses, and what aspects of the Rabbinic enterprise it covers. His careful and thorough analysis reveals that owing to the multifaceted character of the Rabbinic enterprise, no single theory is adequate to fully ground Rabbinic authority as traditionally understood. Students of Judaism and philosophers of religion in general will be intrigued by this philosophical examination of a central issue of Judaism.

Book Democracy Federalism the European Revolution and Global Governance

Download or read book Democracy Federalism the European Revolution and Global Governance written by Andrea Bosco and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-10 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Union is facing today the greatest crisis since its creation. Brexit could mean not only the reversal of its steady enlargement—from 6 to 28 member states—but also the beginning of an inexorable decline leading to its disintegration. However, few today seem to recollect that it was precisely the British who were the first to promulgate the political culture which inspired the European Union’s construction—democracy and federalism—and the first who tried to realise, in June 1940, a European federation on the basis of an Anglo-French union. This volume traces the fundamental stages of the European unification process, placing it in relation to the wider process of world economic and political integration. In particular, it analyses the historical significance of the European Revolution, which is identified in the overcoming of the nation state—namely the modern political formula which institutionalised the political division of mankind—and the birth of the first truly international state. The universal historical significance of the European Revolution lies in its exportability—as for the other great European revolutions—and, therefore, its potential as progressively extensible to all the states of the planet. Europe was indeed the first region of the world where the barriers between national states fell, and a post-national political identity emerged, complementary to national political identities. It is, in fact, in the context of the European Union that democracy beyond the borders of the nation state has first been realized, constituting a guiding principle for global governance.
