Book The Theory of Democracy Revisited Part One

Download or read book The Theory of Democracy Revisited Part One written by Giovanni Sartori and published by CQ Press. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is part one of a two-volume set. "...[Sartori] reviews the major democratic theories of our time and canvasses astutely the salient issues among them. Sartori synthesizes a theory of his own which he proffers as a new mainstream view to his readers. His trenchant and swift-moving argument moves deftly among competing schools of thought. The book's greatest strength lies in Sartori's demonstration that prescriptive and descriptive theories (the ideal and the real) must be blended, to be valid, in an integral whole—in theory of the democratically possible. The clarity and dramatic power of this erudite work render it very accessible to undergraduate students." – William T. Bluhm, The University of Rochester

Book An Epistemic Theory of Democracy

Download or read book An Epistemic Theory of Democracy written by Robert E. Goodin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democracy has many attractive features. Among them is its tendency to track the truth, at least under certain idealized assumptions. That basic result has been known since 1785, when Condorcet published his famous jury theorem. But that theorem has typically been dismissed as little more than a mathematical curiosity, with assumptions too restrictive for it to apply to the real world. In An Epistemic Theory of Democracy, Goodin and Spiekermann propose different ways of interpreting voter independence and competence to make jury theorems more generally applicable. They go on to assess a wide range of familiar political practices and alternative institutional arrangements, to determine what constellation of them might most fully exploit the truth-tracking potential of majoritarian democracy. The book closes with a discussion of how epistemic democracy might be undermined, using as case studies the Trump and Brexit campaigns.

Book Requisites of Democracy

Download or read book Requisites of Democracy written by Jørgen Møller and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the conceptual and theoretical writings of Joseph Schumpeter, Robert A. Dahl, Guillermo O’Donnell, and T. H. Marshall. It demonstrates that most of the different conceptions of democracy in the democratization literature can be ordered in one systematic regime typology that distinguishes between ‘thinner’ and ‘thicker’ definitions of democracy. The authors argue that the empirical pattern revealed by this typology is explained by the combination of internal structural constraints and international factors facilitating democracy. The result of such contending forces is that most of the democratizations in recent decades have only produced competitive elections, rather than ‘more demanding’ attributes of democracy such as political liberties, the rule of law, and social rights. Examining theoretical and empirical approaches to measuring, defining and understanding democracy, the book will be of interest to scholars of political theory and comparative politics in general and democratization studies in particular.

Book Democracy and Distrust

Download or read book Democracy and Distrust written by John Hart Ely and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1981-08-15 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerfully argued appraisal of judicial review may change the face of American law. Written for layman and scholar alike, the book addresses one of the most important issues facing Americans today: within what guidelines shall the Supreme Court apply the strictures of the Constitution to the complexities of modern life? Until now legal experts have proposed two basic approaches to the Constitution. The first, “interpretivism,” maintains that we should stick as closely as possible to what is explicit in the document itself. The second, predominant in recent academic theorizing, argues that the courts should be guided by what they see as the fundamental values of American society. John Hart Ely demonstrates that both of these approaches are inherently incomplete and inadequate. Democracy and Distrust sets forth a new and persuasive basis for determining the role of the Supreme Court today. Ely’s proposal is centered on the view that the Court should devote itself to assuring majority governance while protecting minority rights. “The Constitution,” he writes, “has proceeded from the sensible assumption that an effective majority will not unreasonably threaten its own rights, and has sought to assure that such a majority not systematically treat others less well than it treats itself. It has done so by structuring decision processes at all levels in an attempt to ensure, first, that everyone’s interests will be represented when decisions are made, and second, that the application of those decisions will not be manipulated so as to reintroduce in practice the sort of discrimination that is impermissible in theory.” Thus, Ely’s emphasis is on the procedural side of due process, on the preservation of governmental structure rather than on the recognition of elusive social values. At the same time, his approach is free of interpretivism’s rigidity because it is fully responsive to the changing wishes of a popular majority. Consequently, his book will have a profound impact on legal opinion at all levels—from experts in constitutional law, to lawyers with general practices, to concerned citizens watching the bewildering changes in American law.

Book The Unintended Destruction of the Human Race

Download or read book The Unintended Destruction of the Human Race written by Alex Roberto Hybel and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-11 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through a sweeping historical narrative spanning centuries, Hybel traces the evolution of human civilization, from the dawn of the Renaissance to the digital age. Drawing upon diverse disciplines including history, politics, religion, economics, and environmental science, Hybel reveals how each successive wave of technological innovation, economic growth and individual political and economic freedom has fueled a destructive cycle of consumerism, exploitation, and ecological degradation. At the heart of this book lies a stark warning: our addiction to growth and consumption is driving us inexorably towards our own demise. Hybel argues that our unwavering faith in the virtues of capitalism, democracy, and technological advancement has blinded us to the existential threats facing our planet and our species. But Hybel offers more than a critique of the status quo; he presents a compelling case for radical transformation. By interrogating the intertwined forces of technology, capitalism, and individualism, Hybel challenges readers to confront the uncomfortable truths at the root of our collective predicament.

Download or read book Beyond Modernity written by Mohammed Moussa and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2023-10-30 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A contest is afoot in Muslim discourses around the world in the twenty-first century. Prevalent norms and acts are subject to competing motivations, trends and forces. The image of a monolithic Islam is thus wholly inadequate to identify and interpret the different expressions of Muslim thought and practice in their specific yet connected contexts. This book proposes competing and persuasive perspectives for interpreting what Muslims say, do and think in collective settings or in the light of common frames of reference. The chapters contained in this book reflect a diversity of disciplines and interests. Nonetheless, a common thread of the preoccupation with meanings in context unites the contributors and the approaches to their chosen examples. Islam is not a discrete category that is taken for granted. Instead, the cacophony of voices in the Muslim world situated in specific contexts, variously national, regional or global, is allowed to inform each chapter. Here one encounters contemporary Muslims participating in discourses with a contested character that create opportunities to augment or question orthodox dictates or transmit or alter existing beliefs and practices. What emerges are nuanced portraits of contemporary Muslim thought and practice that reveal a far from monolithic Islam to which all things Islamic can be reduced.
