Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Practice of Scientific Management AN element of risk attaches to any effort to appraise a movement while that movement is still in its earlier and more enthusiastic stages, especially when the appraisal is made by one who is (however modestly) a participant in it. The attempt is justified only by the accuracy with which facts are presented and by the justice and fairness of the inferences and conclusions drawn. In this book I have tried to give only facts which can be verified and to make infer emees with all due conservatism. The result is Offered for what it may be worth. There is some consolation in the thought that a later genera tion may count it an original, or at least con temporary, source. N 0 such treatise exists. The Taylor, Gantt and Gilbreth classics were either for Special audiences or treated of Special phases. It is also true that all books in this field written before the Great War were addressed to those who needed to be convinced as to the basic soundness Of a philosophy rather than to those who, having accepted that philosophy, desire to know more Of the technique and-extent Of its application. Book The Principles of Scientific Management

Download or read book The Principles of Scientific Management written by Frederick Winslow Taylor and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems, at first glance, like an obvious step to take to improve industrial productivity: one should simply watch workers at work in order to learn how they actually do their jobs. But American engineer FREDERICK WINSLOW TAYLOR (1856-1915) broke new ground with this 1919 essay, in which he applied the rigors of scientific observation to such labor as shoveling and bricklayer in order to streamline their work... and bring a sense of logic and practicality to the management of that work. This highly influential book, must-reading for anyone seeking to understand modern management practices, puts lie to such misconceptions that making industrial processes more efficient increases unemployment and that shorter workdays decrease productivity. And it laid the foundations for the discipline of management to be studied, taught, and applied with methodical precision.

Book Scientific Management

Download or read book Scientific Management written by Horace Bookwalter Drury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Management: A History and Criticism IN preparing a new edition of this book, the original text has been largely extended and revised. Every state ment has as far as possible been brought down to the present date; and the more important developments of the past two and a half years have been taken up, each in its appropriate place. In a number of cases the conclu sions themselves have been rewritten. The author has made every effort to correct errors both of fact and judgment, and wishes here to express his warm appreciation to certain among the men best acquainted with the development of scientific manage ment for the unstinted aid which they have given him in this task. Several went through the entire book very carefully, and practically all whose connection with the scientific management movement is discussed herein have given their criticism on the pertinent sections. No other person, however, has any responsibility whatsoever for the statements as they now stand. In each case I have tried simply to record my own impres sions, as clearly as possible, and without hesitating because of any feeling of friendship or hostility which I might have acquired towards men or institutions. This was an easy matter in the preparation of the first edi tion, for my acquaintance with the personalities involved was as yet brief and impersonal. I have tried to main tain the same attitude in the present writing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Principles of Scientific Management Frederick Winslow Taylor The cheapening of any article in common use almost immediately results in a largely increased demand for that article. Take the case of shoes, for instance. The introduction of machinery for doing every element of the work which was formerly done by hand has resulted in making shoes at a fraction of their former labor cost, and in selling them so cheap that now almost every man, woman, and child in the working-classes buys one or two pairs of shoes per year, and wears shoes all the time, whereas formerly each workman bought perhaps one pair of shoes every five years, and went barefoot most of the time, wearing shoes only as a luxury or as a matter of the sternest necessity. In spite of the enormously increased output of shoes per workman, which has come with shoe machinery, the demand for shoes has so increased that there are relatively more men working in the shoe industry now than ever before. The human element is at once the most important factor, and the greatest variable in the problem Which the organizer has to solve, and his success depends largely upon his ability to recognize and handle this phase of the proposition.
