This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory and Policy of Labour Protection His plea for more international exchange of Opinions and international uniformity of practice is one which must be echoed by all who have the cause of Labour at heart. To that larger sense of brotherhood which ex tends beyond the bounds Of country we must look for the accomplishment of the Social Revolution which is surely on the way. On a task SO large, and involving such far reaching issues to the progress of the world, the nations must take hands and step together if the results are to be of permanent value. The paralyzing dread of war, the competition of foreign workmen, the familiar Capitalist weapon that trade will leave the country if the workers' claims are conceded all these dangers in the way can only be met by the drawing closer of interna tichal bonds, by the intercommunication of those in all countries who are fired by the new ideals, and are making towards an ordered Social peace out of the chaos Of con flicting and competing energies and interests in which we live. It cannot but be well to be reminded, as Dr. Schaffie reminds us, of the strong expression of Opinion uttered by the Berlin International Labour Conference as to the beneficial results which might be looked for from a series of such gatherings, or to ask ourselves, why should not England be the next to convene a Labour Conference to gather up the experiences of the last few years, which have been so full of movement and agitation in the Labour world, as well as to give to other nations the benefit of the earnest and strenuous investigations, now. Download or read book The Right to the Whole Produce of Labour written by Anton Menger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Right to the Whole Produce of Labour: The Origin and Development of the Theory of Labour's Claim to the Whole Product of Industry On the historical, as well as on the critical side, Dr. Menger's book deals with much that, if not entirely new to English economists, has certainly been too much neglected by them. But it is his critical method which will probably appear most unfamiliar, at least to those whose reading has been confined within the narrow pale of what used to be called the orthodox school. It may therefore be worth while to glance at the purpose of his criticism, the standpoint from which it sets out, and the general character of its results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labour and the Popular Welfare Nearly all the general truths of Economic Science are, directly or indirectly, truths about the character or the actions of human beings. It is, consequently, always well to warn the readers of economic works, that in Political Economy, more than in any other science, every general rule is fringed with exceptions and modifications; and that instances are never far to seek which seem to prove the reverse of what the general rule states, or to make the statement of it appear inaccurate. But such general rules need be none the less true for this; nor for practical purposes any the less safe to reason from. They resemble. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Labour and Protection: A Series of Studies Of protective tariffs, says Henry George, x is to raise the price Of commodities. But men who work for wages are. Not sellers of commodities; they are sellers of labour. They sell labour in order that they may buy commodities. How can an increase in the price of commodities benefit them? The advocates of Protection, indeed, are seldom drawn from the friends of labour. In modern Germany their origin is much the same as it is in England; they belong to that section Of the landed and commercial classes which is most hostile to labour move ments. In the United States they centre in the great Trusts, and include the directors Of some of the worst-rewarded toil in America. New York, the home of Pro tection, is also the seat of startling misery among great masses of its workers, and of conditions of housing that have become intolerable in London.
