Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theology and Ethics, of the Hebrews A true exposition of the Religion and Ethics of the Hebrews must be a narrative of a constant movement. The men of those ages were mentally alive and progressive. Consequently our exposition must prove to be a vision of a steady progress of religion through the ages. The movement and development of men are seen truly only in their own utterances, not in what chroniclers have said of them. Therefore, in our pages we try to let the thinkers' own words be read. This becomes the more imperative to-day when the careful student of texts and times tells us that the traditional views of these have been mistaken, and that much rearrangement of passages is necessary, if we are to read the words of the original writers as they were written. The case becomes very serious when we deal with the Pentateuch and other narrative books. Few students do not now see that these are composite works, and that the various elements in them belong to different writers and different periods of time. Book The Ethics of the Old Testament Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ethics of the Old Testament Classic Reprint written by Hinckley G. Mitchell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of the Old Testament In the Introduction I discuss the sources, that is, the books Of the Old Testament, in the order in which they appear in the Hebrew Bible. When I proceed to use them for the purpose in hand, I take them, some times in parts, as far as possible in chronological order. There are cases in which I have found it impossible to follow this plan, the most exceptional being that of the Book of Psalms, which, although it doubtless contains some much earlier pieces, has others that are as late as any other book in the Hebrew canon. I have there fore discussed it by itself as a whole in the closing chapter. A word should be said about the quotations from the Scriptures. They will not always sound familiar. The explanation is that, when I have quoted, I have generally followed the American Revision, but I have sometimes changed it where I found it unsatisfactory, and sometimes made my own translation or adopted one made by a recognized scholar. In no case have I taken such liberty without good authority for the rendering preferred. The passages that seemed to require correction are included in the list Of those specially discussed in the second index. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Ethics: A Manual of Instruction in the History and Principles of Judaism, According to the Hebrew Scriptures It is the design of this little work to lead up, by progressive steps, to the study of the Bible. Its matter is Biblical. It is the religion and moral code of the Bible which is here taught, freed from the doc trines of theology. This is pure judaism, but is at the same time that in which Jew and non-jew agree, because it is religion shorn of that added material in' which no two sects entirely coincide. Book excerpt: This volume in the Belief series provides a new and interesting theological interpretation of Genesis through the themes of liberation and the concerns of the poor and marginalized. De La Torre wrestles with Genesis texts, remembering Jacob's wrestling at Peniel (Gen. 32:24-32), and finds that "there are consequences when we truly wrestle with the biblical text, struggling to see the face of God." This commentary provides theological and ethical insights that enables the book of Genesis to speak powerfully today.

Book The Epistle to the Ephesians

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle to the Ephesians: Its Doctrine and Ethics But both in substance and in style the Lectures still retain clear traces of their original character. They were written for a popular congregation, not for the solitary student. And I do not know that I should have had the courage to publish them but for the very kind and hearty reception which has been given both in England and America to a similar series of Lectures which I published some years ago on the Epistle to the Hebrews. I have learnt that there are large numbers of Christian people to whom expository lectures of this popular kind are of more service than ordinary commentaries. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of the Fathers The Discourses in this volume were originally preached in German and created a furore at the time of their delivery. They were the author's first efforts in the American Jewish pulpit, which he so conspicuously adorned. Heard by very large audiences, they were eagerly read and discussed throughout the length and breadth of the land when they appeared, week by week, in the columns of The American Hebrew, in hastily prepared translation by his friend Max Cohen, the Librarian of the then Maimonides Free Library. They were afterwards published in book form. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Epistle to the Hebrews

Download or read book The Epistle to the Hebrews written by D D and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Epistle to the Hebrews: Its Doctrine and Significance IT is only of late years that anything like an adequate study has been bestowed on the Epistle to the Hebrews. A few great passages of the Epistle have always been among the most familiar in scripture, but even professed theologians have concerned themselves little with its teaching as a whole. This neglect has been partly due to the character of the argument, which is cast in an archaic mould, and often impresses a modern reader as barren and artificial. To a still greater extent the Epistle has suffered from the mistaken views that have prevailed as to its nature and purpose. It has been commonly regarded as a mere appendix to the Pauline writings, or as a tract that has survived from a forgotten controversy, or at best as the manifesto of some isolated sect. A work that appeared to count for so little in the main development of Christian thought has not un naturally been pushed into the background. Book The Moral Life of the Hebrews

Download or read book The Moral Life of the Hebrews written by J. M. Powis Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Moral Life of the Hebrews This book undertakes to present a history of the development of Hebrew morals as recorded in the Old Testament. That there was a historical development none can well deny. The aim here is to present that history as objectively as possible. The facts are for the most part left to speak for themselves. The literary sources containing the record of this moral progress are treated in the probable order of their origin. The presentation might have been made more vivid and vital if space had permitted a closer integration of the moral practices and ideals with the contemporary social and economic conditions amid which they functioned. The social aspects of ethical problems and situations have not been wholly ignored. But there is still need of, and room for, a good scientific handbook on the sociology of the Hebrews. The Hebrew point of view always coupled morals with religion. They were one and inseparable. The outstanding characteristic of Hebrew religion is the fact that it gave free course to the moral forces latent within it. None of the Hebrew thinkers ever separated morals from religion. It was the moral passion of the Hebrew religion that gave it its dynamic. Ethics and theology advanced together, each supporting the other. The great contribution of the prophets was that they ethicized the religion of their people. Their crowning achievement was ethical monotheism. Its chief characteristics are (a) its rigid exclusion of all proeesses, both critical and exegetical, from its notes; (5) its presupposition and its use of the assured results of historical investigation and criticism wherever such results throw light on the biblical text; (e) its running analysis both in text and comment; (d) its brief explana tory notes adapted to the rapid reader; (e) its thorough but brief Introductions; (f) its use of the Revised Version of 1881, supplemented with all important renderings in other versions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Exposition Exposition is the art of Opening up the scriptures, laying them out, reproducing their matter and their spirit in forms vitalized by the personality of the expositor. The expository preacher Shows how the portraits, the dramas, the theology, the ethics of the Hebrews are for ever profitable for instruction, because human nature in its weakness and its strength, its hopes and its fears, its sorrows and its joys, its help lessness when left to itself and its consequent dependence on God, its craving for communion with God and the realized possibility of such communion, is unchangeable. He compares scripture with scripture, and most of all he throws back on the scriptures of the Old Testament the searchlight of the New.
