Book Tibetan Border Worlds

Download or read book Tibetan Border Worlds written by Wim Van Spengen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of the study is the Tibetan and Tibetanized border populations in the little known Himalayan high-valley of Nyishang in West Central Nepal close to the Tibetan border. There, a group of traders have greatly extended their external relations over the past century in the form of long-distance trade ventures, thereby thoroughly changing the internal conditions of socio-economic organizations in their home district. The object of the study is to establish whether larger geohistorical processes of structural change may be conceptualized in such a way as to link structuration at the level of the localized social group to the dynamics of the wider regional setting.

Book Education and Polity in Nepal

Download or read book Education and Polity in Nepal written by Dharam Vir and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1988 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The educational process appears to be a dialectical process being the centre of generation of new knowledge, ideas and innovations and, therefore, it has a tendency to reflect upon political processes. Intellectuals produced within its corridors generally raise the voice of dissent, not only against the establishment, but sometimes against the existing social structure itself. Thus the relationship between education and polity is not unidimensional but a two-way traffic. Unveil the patterns of interaction between the polity and education, the interplay between education and social stratification and the interaction between the education and the process of modernization. Nepal, the magnificent, snow-clad and ancient Himalayan kingdom, is the focus of the work. Review ``On the whole, the book provides a very good analytical and empirical insight into the development of higher education in Nepal, in the light of the socio-political factors. This book can be useful for a good reading for all those who are interested in the area of higher education''. Dr. Sneha Joshi, Review Projector, Vol. VIII, Nos. 10–12.

Book Peoples of the Buddhist World

Download or read book Peoples of the Buddhist World written by Paul Hattaway and published by William Carey Library. This book was released on 2004 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past 20 years, Christians around the world have launched initiatives to reach Muslims, Communists, Hindus and other major unreached people groups but the Buddhist world has largely been overlooked. Hundreds of millions of Buddhists continue to live and die without any exposure to the Gospel. In Peoples of the Buddhist World, researcher and author Paul Hattaway graphically presents prayer profiles of more than 200 Buddhist people groups around the world, beautifully illustrated with color pictures throughout. In addition, experts have contributed articles on various aspects of Buddhism, helping the reader to learn, pray and work until that day when "the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ and he will reign for ever and ever" (Rev. 11:15).--From publisher's description.

Book Nationalism and Ethnicity in a Hindu Kingdom

Download or read book Nationalism and Ethnicity in a Hindu Kingdom written by D. Gellner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 650 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its systematic coverage of different groups, this book demonstrates how similar trends of ethnic formation are affecting all parts of Nepal. Yet, within the boundaries of a single culturally diverse state, very different forms of ethnicity have emerged. " This is a truly thematic collection with a well-defined focus on the important contemporary topics of ethnic identity and nationalism. The importance of the theme is self-evident in a world attempting to come to grips with such problems in virtually all modern states. Anyone with an interest in contemporary Nepal should study this volume." Nepal is the only officially Hindu kingdom in the world and remains so in spite of a revolution, or people's movement, in 1990 which overthrew the partyless Panchayat regime and instituted a multiparty constitutional monarchy. Since November 1994, it has also had an elected Communist government, the first of its kind in South Asia. This volume takes a long-term view of the various processes of ethnic and national development that have been displayed, both before and after 1990. It brings together twelve carefully chosen ethnographic and historical chapters covering all of the major ethnic groups and regions of Nepal.

Book Fluid Boundaries

    Book Details:
  • Author : William F. Fisher
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2001-12-24

Download or read book Fluid Boundaries written by William F. Fisher and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2001-12-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than an ethnography, this book clarifies one of the most important current debates in anthropology: How should anthropologists regard culture, history, and the power process? Since the 1980s, the Thakali of Nepal have searched for an identity and a clarification of their "true" culture and history in the wake of their rise to political power and achievement of economic success. Although united in this search, the Thakali are divided as to the answers that have been proposed: the "Hinduization" of religious practices, the promotion of Tibetan Buddhism, the revival of practices associated with the Thakali shamans, and secularization. Ironically, the attempts by the Thakali to define their identity reveal that to return to tradition they must first re-create it—but this process of re-creation establishes it in a way in which it has never existed. To return to "tradition"—to become Thakali again—is, in a way, to become Thakali for the very first time.
